Weekend of fishing and diving

Went out on a friends boat to Rotto on Saturday. After not doin so well the week before ( small crays around GI), we were keen to find some good crays. With me being new to it all, Jarred led the way and on the first dive and found one cave with about 20 crays in it. We ended up with 5 size ones after the first dive. just after we clipped the tails fisheries showed up and checked our licence and the cray sizes.

On the second dive we decided to go really shallow (2.5m) so we could have a longer dive and we were surprised to find a few monster crays, jarred ended up getting one of them, the biggest cray ive ever seen!! (remember it was only my 3rd ever cray dive).

Even though we only got six, all by jarred, it was still a great day, gotta love havin an island like rotto just off our coast!

On Sunday I went out hoping to hit up some skippy on the 3 mile. I was using my new favourite bait and rig, small bluebait on smaller gangs with a swivel and a tiny sinker.  The first lump produced only lots of wrasse and a breaksea cod, all realased ofcourse.

We decided to head back and try one more spot in shallower water. found a lump in about 9.5m and burleyed up. after a few more pestering wrasse, i loosened the drag and put the rod down to pick up my phone...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZ   a huge hit!, put my phone down and picked up the rod. It didnt feel like a skippy, I was hoping it was a small sambo (havent caught one yet) and after a bit of a fight keeping the drag loose not wanting the little hooks to bend or break, a nice dhufish surfaced. My first one too! (havent had a boat long) we got it into the boat for a quick photo and then it was put back to fight another day.

Agree it is very exciting when you start the whole cray catching thing. I still get a great buzz out of it. Thumper cray.
