What braid to use?

Hey guys i have recently purchased a 16000 SOM spool for my stella 8k. I will be using this for a bit of GT fishing up in exmouth and sambo jigging in the metro.I am looking at the YGK ultra castman x8 line. Now im not sure if i should go with the pe6 85lb roughly or pe8 105lb roughly?? Is pe8 too heavy for my reel?

Marko I have an 8000SW and spooled it with PE4 Saltiga boat braid, got 300mtrs just.

Obviously with the SOM upgrade you will get more line, but geez pe8 sounds heavy to me, not knocking you though mate as i haven't done any GT fishing yet.

Did you pick up a good rod ?

I suppose at the end of the day, it all depends on how much hurt you want to apply.

The more drag you set the greater the breaking strain or line class.

I still follow the rule of ' Breaking strain = 1/3rd drag setting'.

Have you chose a rod yet?

Have you chose a rod yet? That will also play a part in your decision.

Plenty of people run pe8 on their 8000/10000 shimanos, however, I certainly wouldn't recommend prolonged use of that line class for your reel. The 8000/10000 reel is by no means a pe8 reel.

The 16000 spool provides capacity, it doesn't mean your reel has grown bigger balls.

Yeah, its not cheap but if you order it from OS you'll get 600m for close to what some shops here sell 300m for!

There are a fair few ppl from Gtpopping that use the stella 10000sw for PE8 work although it seems accepted that this is asking a lot of a reel this size.

Are you land-based? speak to ppl who have popped exmouth and find out how far you'll have to cast, the underwater terrain and what size the GTs you are likely to encounter. All these factors will influence your decision.

The US saltiga rods are certainly a step down from whats available here. The local ones are full fuji sic guides. Probably not really that relevant, not sure I'd buy a daiwa for gt popping when there are so many good jap rods out there.

I know nothing about popping GTs, but seeing as this is the internet, I don't mind posting about it ;)

I don't really know anything about the JM GT rods, perhaps check out Kaiser Pro Shop, their El Toro has quite a following already is apprently an ok price.

YGK

Sun, 2011-01-16 16:51

YGK is a good line, I ran 50 lb braid on a saltist 40 for 4 years and landed over 200 Sambo's with it, if you tie your knots well and work the rod right 50 to 80 is all you need for anything that you can do with stand up , after 80lb you need to go a harness and / or chair.

I only landede rat GT's up Exxy ( maybe 15/20kg) and 50lb worked on them too.

PE 6 or PE 8

Tue, 2011-01-18 09:13

Where you're going for GT's you wont need more than PE6 or 80lb as casting distance will be more important than stopping power.

It'll make no difference whether you run PE 6 or 8, when they do you'll in, you'll generally lose the lot.

I'd run PE 6 for casting distance and also able to get the whole 300m on it.

Spewing you missed out on the 50% off Xmas sale, but they are still having a 30% off sale...

Plat are the best online shop I have ever delt with.  You will get your order in 5-7 days.

Both of these lines are so thin and strong, you can get a hell of allot of line on your spool.
