What do you do in Exmouth when the winds howling?
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Mon, 2010-10-18 17:41
I know it sounds like a bit of a silly question and I expect a lot of people to say, drink drink drink. But when you come to Exmouth and the wind is howling and boat fishing is out, what do you and the family, or you and your mates do to pass the time?

Go fishing
you may have to drive a bit or work a bit smarter but there is always somewhere to fish and something to fish for.
So tell me have you got your info from years on the water or hours on the internet?

There is generally always a landbased place to fish when the wind is up at Exmouth. During the warmer months sometimes the tip of the cape is the only place you'll have the wind behind you, so I have spent many an hour flicking a fly around up there for queenies, trevally, dart etc.

Gulf
Head down the bottom of the gulf and throw a lure about.
Been speaking to a mate who manages the station on the west side of Onslow and down towards the gulf to arrange a trip or two to go exploring some of the creeks and islands .

Had a couple of bad days
Had a couple of bad days there at Christmas time last year. Trolled out to 150m line and back and then hit inside the reef for a few Spanglies on poppers. Honestly the only fishing day I can ever remember never being able to get onto the plane once all day.
Otherwise I would just shoot down to Bay of Rest and catch Crabs and Jacks all day.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

Barra
What do you reckon about being able to fish for 4-5kg barra (will get bigger). Pay $20 (i'm guessing) to fish C&R and if you want you can buy the fish to take home. Big dam type scenario with snags etc, maybe a few jacks thrown in there etc etc. Would you be interested if you came to town and it was blowing its ring out and the other options were so-so. Also, what do you think would be a fair price for something like that?

head to the pub for that chicken parma, with a pizza / the few ales and top it of chocking on a few ciggies, head back to the lighthouse caravan park and upset a old prick by flushing the boat motor. backpakers is a good idea too.

Mud Crabs
If you are keen on a long walk there is plenty of mud crabs to be had.
As for the barra I would be keen if it wasn't going to be to expensive. Around $20 would be fair as long as the fish don't become to hard to catch like golden ponds can be like. Maybe you only have to pay full price if you actually get one. Nothing worse than paying to fish and the fish are completely shut down.

Barra
Adam
The Backpackers always rate very highly when the wind blows!!!! But as a great alternative, I know myself and the guys I go fishing with would love to catch some barra, when we can't get out. The price seams pretty reasonable.
Cheers
