What is this fish species & name please

Hi, I caught this last night out the front between Mooloolaba/Coolum, it's got purpley blue marks around it's face, body really blueish on the top and blends to pink on it's belly with a very yellow tail that looks like it comes from the emperor/bream species, and it has no teeth. My neighbour used to be a pro fisho and thinks it may be a great barrier reef species. I'm really keen to find out what it is, looked through all my books that I have with no success.

so you figured it looked

so you figured it looked tasty and took it home anyway hey?

EDIT: The more of these posts that I see, the more I think germany has the right idea. A rec fishing licence isnt enough. We need to start making people sit a test before getting a licence. Just so ppl are aware that size limits, bag limits, closed seasons and protected species exist. Can also haver some questions in the test regarding release weights, fish handling etc. As well as the basic fact that if you dont know what it is, put it back.

Im sorry to have a go at ya mate, and I dont know what the fish is, but we are seeing this a fair bit recently.

that's prime mackereal bait

Wed, 2011-04-13 19:38

that's prime mackereal bait that!

Fusilier is what it is, someone will give it's full name. If you can find these being all skittish on the surface, start chucking poppers or SP's out, there is bound to be a hungry mack or trevally around

What's the differance

Wed, 2011-04-13 21:03

What's the differance between this poor guy catching the odd Pretty fish and the clowns that pull up on a school of dhuys and catch and release them, hmm ever heard of Barotrauma.

Anyway the second pic would be a nice Avatar.

wow it's all fucking doom and

Wed, 2011-04-13 20:45

wow it's all fucking doom and gloom with you all isn't it? the man took one fish, tried to identify it with his books and no luck and you guys are at his throat like he's wiped it off the face of the planet. There's not many protected species out there gents and all are VERY identifiable.

get off your horses gents he's done no wrong, not many fish with a bag limit of one fish and we all know those species. Good for a live bait but no good on the chew for you or the cat. mother in law maybe....

Brucesta, not everyone has a science degree like most here and a knowledge of every fish in our ocean, to ridicule a person because they have decided to keep a fish they cant identify, wtfru, even the top two posters didnt know what it was, but i am sure cuthbad would've of used it for a shark bait if given the opportunity and mat miller might of been able to use it to catch that elusive salmon

have a good hard think!!! if your not sure take a pik at sea and release it simple isnt it?????? not rocket science? you guys are the first to winge that all of us are saying to release an unidentified fish but i bet the situation would be different if this fish was undersize due to it being unidentified wouldnt you???? this is just lucky that it is not !  , there may not be many protected species but there sure is a few fish that have size limits!

Right on Brucesta.  Over this crap, we now know what it is.  Thread locked and if you want your account gone Brenz (as you have asked), consider it done.
