WHAT ROD/REEL
Submitted by DORO on Mon, 2006-07-31 10:21
Just a quick question.
What rod/reel combo would be good for my 6yr old son?
Ussually we just go of jetty or rock wall and catch
some bream/taylor,which is fine. But his rod needs to be upgraded
so I need some expert advice like length wieghtand line that would be ok
for jetty and when we go out in the boat(this weekend weather permiting)
haven't been out for a while. Don't want anything to expensive or really cheap and nasty. So are K-Mart or Big W any good for decent rod reel combo's.
Any help would be appreciated thanx

got a price in mind ,
then I could rattle off a few rod reels for ya .
$200 would get a decent combo that would last a fair few years .

Rod
So I take it you just want a light combo that he can cast easy? Something in the 4-6kg range? I have a penn applause 4000, small reel, very light, can handle bigger fish if care is taken but isn't too much overkill on the smaller stuff. Maybe the applause 2000, they are about $120 and you can get a quality rod to match for a total outfit around $200 tops spooled up with light line.
I will get a few of the tackle shop gurus to give their advice.

Well the Penn accord 4000 is
Well the Penn accord 4000 is pretty much an applause with out the metal body, its graphite, which would be lighter and easier to hold for a 6 year old. Still comes with a 5 year warrenty. RRP is around $69 from memory. As for a reel, best getting him a glass/composite rod as opposed to graphite as kids can be a bit rough and graphite is fragile.
Id suggest a 7ft ugly stick gold around 4-6kg. Line probably around 12-15lb mono. Those rods around around $80-85. So all up about $160.
Ofcourse you could get a cheaper rod or reel , but something that like is pretty tough and should last the kid a few years at least!

When I started fishing at about age 6 to 8 I got a 15$ rod, I think it was mostly made of wood, and a 20$ plastic reel. Boy was I happy with that.

i recal fishing albany when i was about 6 with one of those cheap glass rods with steel key-ring like guides, plastic grips and a reel that goes up and down laying down lines faster than that travola in pulp fiction. Ah those were the days.

Combo
Just been to the shop to look at some rod reel combos.
But like usual I done more than look.
Ended up with 6'6 shimano rod with shimano 2000 reel for the young fella
And a 7'6 shimano rod with a shimano 6000 reel for me.
And a few lures and hooks.
Iknow not top of the range but will do until I find some decent
fishing spots with some decent fish to catch.
