Not so much an opinion as it is fact but this one get my dad riled up each and every time:

With a few conditions added I think that idea would certainly make a few people think before they acted, good idea.

People who work in the intel

Thu, 2016-11-17 06:46

People who work in the intel world are pretty good at working out the difference between a good report and a bad report.  Its part of their job.  Each report is graded on a source reliability scale and an information accuracy scale.

There shouldnt be any discouragement at any people wanting to report stuff.  Every little bit of information can help.  What someone observes one day may seem innocuous but may in fact be a very small but critical piece of a much bigger picture.

Its the role of intel to put those sketchy bits together for the investigators to go and gather the actual evidence to impact and / or convict.

So, sorry the opinion of punishing / discouraging people from providing infirmation is unpopular to me.

I work very closely with the guys at traffic intel at WAPOL and the result they can get from a simple hoon report is amazing using a huge web of intelligence. I can't say much about what happens in between but let's just say that one minute you're driving like a fuckhead down a local road and some old guys reports your no plate and the next day you're being arrested for an outstanding warrant.

Oh yeah. All beer tastes bad, so does all wine. Spirits are the only way to go. AFL level footy is a boring load of wank played by a bunch of self important dickheads. Most boaties these days couldn't consistently catch a feed without electronics if their lives depended on it. Would love to see how you would all fare if you had to rely on instinct & intuition alone after those electronics have dampened those natural hunter instincts all humans have.

Easy Peazy

Dead easy if you were brought up without all the electronic aids.
Landmarks, compass bearings times time travelled, dripping on a big sinker to see what type of bottom is under you, full arm span to get how many fathoms you are in, lot of small hooks to snag weeds to see what growth is there and what fish to expect and most important of all, a good memory or diary

I'd expect you older (sorry) blokes to know these kinds of tricks as you were brought up without those aids, just like I was. The younger lot that have never had to rely on instinct would starve. I used to use Vaseline on the plumb line when I was into my tubs. Even so, those tricks only get you so far.

Thu, 2016-11-17 11:12

Yep pre electronics lad here, we used to use the sun and location of outer reefs to give us an idea of ground at my old mate's shack at Leeman. Compass and timing of direction was all we really had. I did a navigation course when I bought my first Pacemaker so I could have a bit of a clue. But I'll take GPS it just frees up a lot of search time.

Thu, 2016-11-17 12:01

My first ever memory of going fishing would have been 1971 (?), would have been 7 years old.  Uncle used transit marks on rotto to get to the fishing ground and an old paper sounder.  And i remember at least one dhuie being caught that day.

That is exactly how we found our spots out of Narrow neck, Rotto mostly.

But we dived first to check the reef, then fished. If it was a good spot triangulated (tried) and then timed home to the mooring at a slow 10knots.

Couldnt realy find new ground unless vis was good, as we looked over the edge to find likely looking structure. So never very deep, ~40m max I recall. If we had scuba (mostly) we would go for crays first, then fished if we spotted some possible target species. Otherwise we just jumped in with goggles and free dived down to peep. Carnarvonite we never used fathom lines to sound, just couldnt be shagged going deeper than what we could eyeball. AND if you were on likely looking ground fish was still plenty then. Mate caught a 10 kg Dhu from shore at Parker Point fishing for Skippy!!!!

However didnt do to bad, but now I am lazy like the rest

Depths

Fri, 2016-11-18 10:32

Mate got some old charts left to him by his grandfather along with his diaries. The spots on the charts were numbered and in the corresponding numbers in the diary were drawings of the land marks to triangulate the spot and compass bearings when there was no back marker to work from but the depths were all to shallow from what he had written down. Took us a while to work out the difference from what the paper sounder showed to his measurements were his arm span was closer to 7 foot not a fathom because he was approx. 6 foot 4 inches tall.
Did the same off Gnaraloo with charts that showed radar bearings to find spots we had fished professionally some 15 years before gps came out

wonder what others did that didn't have access to diving gear. We certainly didn't have a sounder.
I wouldn't have wanted to navigate around dampier Archi in those days. Might have run into a few bommies loving shallow water popping etc.
Some old timer Cray fisherman catching mullet for bait in front of our beach house in Avalon (falcon) advised us to dive, and if we saw crays but no dhu's still fish there, because dhu's love crays, and he was sooo correct.
But as mentioned never fished deeper than say 30m, because that was basically our dive limit (self imposed) to prevent "bends".
Once had a five minute dive to 60m to check it out, but covered in sambo's so didn't try this one spot.

Yes Chris, ALL beer is vile. The only good thing about beer is that VB cans make great trolling lures if you add a skirt & a hook. AFL is a load of wank. I don't mind lower level footy but the national level of the game gets jammed down our throats & I for one could do without it. You could try deporting me but I was born in this country as were all generations of my family since the 1st convicts arrived.

Shit thats sooo wrong

Fri, 2016-11-18 08:10

I Volunteered as Safety Officer for Rally Oz in Perth, and tested prior to the event with Subaru. We had a Safety Radio at the end of a course set up and Juha Kankkunen kept on doing 180 degree handbrake turns at the end to turn around for the test run (timed) back. We noticed how precise he was, so placed a pair of 50cent coins at the apex of the skid as wide apart as his previous wheel mark on the turn point. In 10 subsequent turns he hit one coin once!!!!!

If you dont call that talent or skill show me something else that is. It was simply amazing.

PS: check this out for skill - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bfDOvEWHM8

 Where to start.

First off, everyone that complains about their chair should be forced to design their own chair then sit in it every day for ten years.

Next, everyone arriving from the UK at an Australian sea or air port should be asked to sign a declaration admitting that the UK cheated in the 1966 world soccer cup or else be turned back.

Next, 'modern family' should be renamed 'gay family' or taken off the air.

Many other strongly held yet poorly thought out opinions. Whisky please.

heres one I feel strongly about ..........parents and the education dept should be able to apply corporal punishment within well defined guidelines to children

currently we have a culture of self entitlement and constant belief in self human rights at any cost to our society ..........the person can do anything because they have rights

id like to see some responsibility for action legally brought back into the culture ......

not abuse , but discipline and making kids aware rights come with responsibilities

There's a reason why corporal punishment was banned in schools and it was because small children were being assaulted by teachers/principals. I understand where you're coming from but you talk to anyone that went through corporal punishment and they have stories of the teacher/principal going to town on them with a cane or a ruler etc and I don't think you can set guidelines on hitting children.

My 6y old was caught throwing his sandwich in the bin then going to the canteen and saying that I didn't give him any lunch and getting a lunch order. You can trust me that the punishment I handed out was more effective than a couple of licks of the cane from his teacher and it's never happened again. I think the problem comes back to the parents that don't dicipline their kids and I'm not sure getting the cane at school will fix this.

My kids are all very well behaved but sometimes they need a firm hand as a reminder and I've got no problems giving my kids a smack in public and I'd dare anyone around me to see it and pipe up and try and tell me how to dicipline my kids.

havin gone to school during

Thu, 2016-11-24 09:06

havin gone to school during the 60s /70s I can say it worked like this jack for most kids .......

be respectfull and you had no issues ......don't and you will get attention to yourself ....AND PARENTS SUPPORTED THAT !!as a kid I knew if I got in trouble at school it would be a lot worse when I got home ..

now parents almost automatically defend the kids and attack the school or teachers
yes some abuse happened , but jeez more abuse for authority now from kids than ever before so I cant see how it has improved with the way it has gone over the last 2 decades or so without it

My dad gave me one across the back of the legs with a horse whip.  Only one though.  And he never had the need to ever consider doing it again.

I got the cane at school

Thu, 2016-11-24 10:40

I got the cane at school then the old man would take to me with a walking stick. So it was always a double whammy. But yep I reckon corporal punishment in school is or was a good thing. This is the generation we are breeding now where there is no discipline, but saying that my boys have both never been in any trouble at school and they are both now teenagers. Some kids need it though because they get none at home.

Yep my mum was a dressage

Yep my mum was a dressage coach. I wish I had never laughed when the wooden spoon broke because there is nothing quite like the sting of a dressage whip. Needless to say, my being a little smart arse phase ended quite quickly.

Moderation

Thu, 2016-11-24 08:54

Not against corporal punishment per se, but I agree that in the past some teachers did over do it. Thats not to say the kid wasnt a shit and probably deserved it.

Corporal punishment for some kids is the only thing that works. The old saying "sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me" has unfortunately been turned on its head. These days society considers verbal abuse and name calling to be far worse than hitting. Well if thats the case, lets not demonise corporal punishment so much. Everything in moderation.

The lefties will say "poor little Frankie of Jane will be emotionally scarred if we label them as a naughty boy/girl". Well BOO FUC*ING HOO". If little Frankie or Jane pulled their heads in they wouldnt be labeled.

- No one is entitled to crayfish/dhufish/scallops etc. If you can't afford it tough titties. Luxury items need to be saved up for, don't piss in my ear because you couldn't get your shit together in 12 months and save up for xmas dinner.

Here you go. A lot of smokers think dropping their filthy stinking butts on the ground is perfectly normal and acceptable.

Women claim they are better

Mon, 2016-11-28 21:46

Women claim they are better at multi tasking but all they do is jump from task to task (in no logical order) and either do them half arsed or not bother actually completing each task.

Skippers ticket annual fee

Sun, 2016-12-04 22:12

I have heard a comment that an annual fee may be introduced on the skippers ticket the same as a drivers licence, will bring in a lot of revenue for the state government.
What do you think, is it possible the government would do this.

The family law court needs

Mon, 2016-12-05 07:27

The family law court needs sorting out. Live with a chick for 6 months and there entitled to some of your assets even though they had no part what so ever with it. Needs a big overhaul to make it even close to fair. If you live with them for a couple of years, make some goood coin they can take a chunk. It happends both ways and needs to be sorted.
