What's a good Ali?

Hi all,

I'm thinking about flogging the Reef Runner and replacing with a smaller ali boat. Yes i know my body will hate me for it, but I'm after something a bit easier to drag to remote areas and beach launch, so I'm gonna have to sacrifice the comfort.  So my question is, what's a good Ali rig around 17 - 19 foot?  And any thoughts re centre console vs fwd control would also be appreciated.

Cheers

In my opinion there is no good ali. But this comes from so.eone thats only owned glass boats.

Have been in a few ali boats over the years and will never get one myself

If you go with centre console prepare to get wet.

All boats have their pros and cons

Ali would work well for what you want to do.

I would go for a side console mounted as far back as possible like used in the NT

 Hey mate I just bought a 5.8

Fri, 2019-06-07 13:02

Hey mate I just bought a 5.8 aluminium the just the other week.

It was made by a boat builder whose out of business

Being a  aluminium boat that size and by a manufacturer I couldn’t find info on I was a bit worried about how it would handle and the build quality

took a chance had a look, took it for a trial it rode well and looked like a strong build..so I bought it   it’s seems quite heavy for its size (going to put it on a weight bridge)   it doesn’t really bang it’s more noise  I’d bee looking at a razerline, chivers, genisis, goldstar  and even some custom made if they are made right

The hull is great, rides

The hull is great, rides really well.. but I wouldn’t let them touch anything else.. paint, electronics, etc. It’s the little things, attention to detail, rivets on cupboards that broke in a week.. and the paint job is very avg

Thats sad to hear. Must be rushing finishings to get more turn over. But finishings are what makes or breaks a boat or anything for that matter. Not what you want after handing over alot of hard earned coin

The best ali mate is a haines signature , amazing boat , great fittout , pure quality , great ride , fantastic resa.......................

 wait , wait a minute ...................... ok

Searider , bullet boats and I have heard the newer westerbergs ( like the new western angler boat) are good too.

I aways think ( my opinion ) that most of the goldstars, genesis , etc etc around that 5m to 5.8m mark always look like they have just shortened the 6m plus

jobbies to make a model .

Even razorlines, seariders , etc and those others only look truly in proportion when they hit 6m plus.

True..... as they shorten the length of the boats they dont reduce it's beam in proportion, because everyone wants maximum deckspace.

So you tend to get short boats that are overly beamy!

Which wrecks proportions

and stuffs the ride. Too wide for their length, can't get a proper transition of a good shape  from entry to transom, trying to  make big boats out of little ones never works. Which is why plateys seem to work so much better when they get 6.5 metres and above.
