Richter plug 2-3oz skipped along the surface or Raider 40-65g allowed to sink for a couple of secs then a moderate retrieve. Halco Twisty's are also good for a slight change of action.
Have also had reasonable results on hardbodys eg. Smiling jacks or Xrap. Also stickbaits like Tango Dancer and Maria Bullchops.
I have yet to catch a tailor on a lure (yea yea - this is a bit of a embarressment) - hopefully this weekend!!!!!! I have aquired meself a Halco 40gr twisty and have a few richters / kingfishers - will give these a go.
Only ever caught choppers in the swan river and they were on small halco laser pro and rmg scorps. Have some rmg skin deep 90's i want to give a shot around metro reefs one day if i can find a decent deckie.
Hi Guys, I've spent too long on this site as a spectator, so I thought I'd better get around to finally posting a comment...
Spent a number of years in Kalbarri and the two lures that I favoured for fishing there over all others were the Halco Roosta and the Raider 65 metal slice. It obviously depends a lot on your gear, but for what I was using, these worked as well as any other shop bought lures and were relatively cheap.
The Raider slices (and I guess many other slices would work just as well) were good for situations where there wasn't big swell and they provided the option of working them fast on the surface or slowly underwater In low swell, slices were always my first choice, though they still didn't work where there was no white water and dead flat conditions would mean that bait was required (though I was never especially interested in using bait).
I did find that the Tailor I landed on metal slices were generally smaller than those I got on poppers. I believe this to be a combination of a few factors:
1) Big Tailor come out, or at least are more aggressive and are more likely to hit your lure in bigger swells.
2) Bigger Tailor are more inclined to hit a popper over a metal slice. This may simply be because they are more likely to see it in the bigger swells where there is lots of white water.
2) If a big Tailor hit a metal slice, I was less likely to land it because they tended to throw the lure more often, due to the single treble over the double treble of a popper.
In bigger swell, with lots of white water, I'd throw out a Roosta popper, as I felt Tailor were more likely to be able to see it and I would be more likely to land them. There are a heap of other poppers that work, but as far as a balance between casting distance, water displacement and ease of movement through the water, I found them to be pretty good.
I'd say that as far as big Tailor on poppers is concerned, I only connected solidly to less than fifty percent of hits but it was a lot of fun watching them launch themselves out of the water trying to grab it. I never figured out why, but on some days it seemed like the big Tailor were blind and missed every swipe but it was still fun from a visual perspective. Don't forget to work whichever lure you use right to your feet, as a lot of stikes come right at the shoreline, especially if you're fishing off a reef/rocks.
For those starting out on lure fishing for Tailor, I'd suggest beginning with using a metal slice like a Raider and finding a spot where you can catch a few solid Tailor out of a bit of white water coming off a reef in average swell conditions. Once you've sussed out a spot where you can do this, return there when the swell cranks up (though it's till good to have the occasional bit of clearish water between waves) and throw out a popper. When you've landed a few Tailor on poppers, you'll want to throw one out every time the conditions are suitable.
Would have to say when chasing Tailor and or salmon i have found Lasers (also like the blue 30gm) and Halco twistys work for me with a fast retrieve, but then again have also used a table spoon with a treble attached to the backend, so anything flashy with a fast retrieve works well.
I like the Fat-r poppers where distance is required. I prefer them over the Richters as I find the Richters sink a bit quick and are slow on the take-up. Having said that though I have had good success on the Richters and still carry them. Fat-rs have dual trebbles and therefore increase the hook-up rate and minimise the chance of the fish throwing the lure. I also keep a supply of Halcos in my bag.
For the metro area im liking the Segroid Little jack in 28g. Its has a nice rolling action and can be worked on the surface and mid water. Plus at 28gyou can fish lighter gear. Ealrier in the year these lures also were a hit in Broome. I ended up loosing all of mine, 3 in 4 casts.
In Kalbarri Chasing Greenbacks I have found that the maria Bullchop in 40g has been a total standout for me, Although when the tailor are on we get them on an array of lures, the bullchops will have a higher hookup rate.
I've used the halco twistys generally get a better response from the chrome colour rather than gold.
Where I just cast them wait for them to sink a bit (or not depending on the reef situation) then retreive varying the speed of retrieve on differnet casts. Never caught tailor :'( but some good sized herring on the 20-30g lures...
What I was wondering was what is the correct technique for poppers? Is it the same cast and moderate to quick retrieve or do you work the lure more?
With poppers you need to really work them so that the "BLOOP" in the water, have had great results with poppers when giving them a good jerk wind up the slack and then jerk the rod again, sort of a savage action similar when using soft plastics for flatties but obviously on the waters surface and a bit faster.
Crystal minnow, xr8 or SnapBack paddle tail. Covers most situations for me. The more I spend on a lure, the higher chance I have of snagging and losing it.
FFS I can't count the number of times I have snapped off a new lure. Should I use a leeder and hope the knot doesn't take out my top eye? Will the bail arm make up it's own mind when it want to go back????
I'll go in a completely different direction and say 7 Inch snapbacks in pearl white work awesome around reefs when the swell isn't huge and they take a bit to get destroyed. Also do like the old faithful halco twisty in gold.

Always found the big chrome slices or Wonder Wobblers are the way to go. They have out fished all the other lures I have tried by a long shot.

Halco Twisty
As much as I have been trying Richters in 1 - 4 oz and a few 85 poppers lately, the twisty has been the big winner

No Matt but it sounds reasonable
For the price of the lures versus some of the overpiced items it's well worth a try.
