Where are the pelagics

Gday everyone,

I'm thinking about taking a few days off work soon to coincide with a weekend and some good weather, if I'm lucky enough for those things to line up then where should I head for my best shot at some pelagics from a boat? Anywhere from Perth to Exmouth is within my reach.

I've done a lot of trolling hours in Perth the last 6 months chasing larger pelagics but could only find small tuna, so I'm still hooked on trolling but want to tango with something a bit bigger.

I would love to chase mackies/tuna/cobia/wahoo/bills etc

I got the gear and a bit of an idea, so just after opinions on where the pelagics have been firing or where my best chances are.

I only have a 5m boat so the Abrolhos is out of the question, but I often fish the fads in Perth so happy to do a few miles from the main land in search of quality fish if conditions allow.

Call me crazy, but so far I'm considering steep point, or Exmouth/Murions. Weather dependent of course.

Might also be chasing a decky if I can't convince a mate to come with me.

Cheers Paul

 Exmouth run of little blacks

Sat, 2016-05-21 05:58

Exmouth run of little blacks came in late this year. There may be a few still around. Hard to really tell with peak being away and no other charters really fishing at the moment.

been in exy for 3 weeks. Mackies have been a no show. Got 1 black last week but have done alot of hours for no result. Dont bother with the murions, its shark central and anything you hook gets slaughtered instantly.

That's a bugger about the Murions, looks like a great small boat spot where you can hide from the elements a little bit.

What are the sharks like a little further out, like around peak island?

Cheers guys, I did see a report on Facebook this morning of someone catching a small black in Exmouth Recently, also had 7 other strikes that didn't connect, so that might be the go. Also good chance of bicatch up there too I guess.

Haha yeah John, unfortunately upgrading the boat isn't on the horizon at the moment, unless I pull the plug on my upcoming wedding haha

Not sure if much has been happening lately but Kalbarri is usually worth a shot. Heard of a few longtail being pulled from there recently

Sat, 2016-05-21 15:17

Yeah Kalbarri is a favourite spot of mine, I thought the water looked a bit cold there on the sea surface charts for some good pelagic action. It's on the list tho

Plenty of marlin up to 100kg

Sat, 2016-05-21 19:26

Plenty of marlin up to 100kg around picked up 2 the other day not realy trying, yellowfn are about and dollies. If you put the time in you will find them. Plenty of mackies just hard the get them in past the sharks. Thats the biggets problem up here at the moment and only getting worse. There is a comp on this weekend and some boats raised 6 to 7 marlin with tuna bycatch in crappy conditions. We also had a marlin follow a red up out of 100mtrs so they are here.

If you want a marlin best chance in a small boat is Exmouth. 10 min from tantabidi your pulling lures.

Cheers

Yeah I guess it is, not much further then I was already planning on traveling.

Water temp still looks alright there and the charters are still getting pelagics, so that might be the go.

Exmouth - Tantabiddi

Wed, 2016-06-01 11:28

Spent last 2 weeks of April targeting marlin from Tantabiddi in 5.7m Trailcraft.

Raised/hooked 20+, landed 10. Only one that we could not revive. Most in the 50-100kg range fishing the 100-300m zone at the "canyon" drop off points which will be easy to spot on the gps (one directly off south passage). In 2015 had very productive time in 80m of water but these were a tad smaller, around 20-40kg.

The macki had not yet arrived in usual numbers, water still too warm apparently.

Sharks were sighted but did not interfere.

V happy to share further Paul, just message me.

Cheers

Plenty of Palagics around Dirk Hartog Island

Wed, 2016-06-01 11:57

Landed 7 Mackies and Lost 3 due to inexperienced deckies.

Also hooked a massive Yellow fin had it connected for more than 15 minutes before loosing it on the boat side. Estimated 50KG + and all captured on video.

Will post it when I find time, Also Paul there where schools of other tuna busting up everywhere.

Paul, no offence to other people comments

Wed, 2016-06-01 12:04

You don't really need a very big boat to catch pelagics.

My boat is only 5.8 M Coralline Oceanrunner and my mates boats are 7M and a 8M. Honestly I catch more pelagics than they do. Its all about technique/choosing the right colour and spreading the lures properly.

If you need any information send a PM more than happy to help.

Cheers

Wed, 2016-06-01 16:34

Thanks for the comments guys I really appreciate it.

Notorious has got the idea of an Abrolhos island trip into my head haha, so I've been planning that lately, worked out fuel consumption, distances, where to moor the boat for the night etc. Just a matter of waiting for some calm weather conditions and I'm going for it. I often fish the fads off Perth during the season and the island's arnt really much further then that so gonna give it a crack!

Sounds like a few of you blokes have been having some good trips lately!

Thu, 2016-06-02 08:07

Theres heaps of longtail around exmouth at the moment and Coral bay has been producing mackerel and wahoo. If you put in some hours in coral bay I'd be very surprised if you didn't get a few.
