Where to fish??

Hello one and all

Just looking for some help...I am coming over to WA for 2 weeks in august and will be driving from Perth to Broome.  I will be bringing my fishing gear and would like any info on where to fish, methods and tactics and any good tackle shops on the way.  As far as species are concerned I dont mind what I fish for although I would love to catch a GT and a queenfish.

Thanks for you help

Rog

stick up a thread "deckie

Thu, 2009-01-15 17:58

stick up a thread "deckie available" and state what you're hoping to catch. The usual applies, chip in for fuel, bait n whatnot. As far as tackle stores are concerned, check out 'the tackle shack' alexander dr. in malaga or 'oceanside' south st. in o'conner.
Oh and welcome to fishwrecked and wa. Hope you enjoy it here, the heat sux, though the fishings good lol.

How to balance the love of my car with my love of fishing...

Depends on how many stops

Thu, 2009-01-15 19:59

Depends on how many stops you are going to make along the way and if you are heading up inland or acean way. For Broome try the jetty and if you have 4WD try barred and Willie creek. Even head up to cape Leveque which is a great place for fishing and scenery. 1 Arm Point also worth a bash. Welcome to the site mate

Chan's suggestion is a good

Thu, 2009-01-15 20:02

Chan's suggestion is a good one. Usually theres people interested in catching up with a fellow fisho :p. Lots and lots of spots to fish up north. Kalbarri has some good fish and pretty sure it has a jetty (heard they get some good mulloway there). Then you have shark bay area and steep point (for balooning). Adam Gallash lives in Exmouth. Good LB spots up there and great if you can get out on a boat. Big John lives in Onslow, so he might have some tips for you around that area. Next up you've got the Pilbarra boys like Brad and Jay. Should be a few LB spots out of Dampier. Broome has a jetty you can get fish off (jig white leadheads at the end) and lots of LB spots. Also consider trying some charters (heard snag-a-barras good but didnt get a chance last time I was up there). The abroholos is a good spot for a charter too (staying overnight is better ;)) or even better, rowley shoals way off broome Laughing

Also theres a magasine called northern fish finder or something like that which should be pretty useful for you.

Jurien Bay is only 3 hours

Fri, 2009-01-16 10:29

Jurien Bay is only 3 hours north of Perth, but it offers some pretty good options for shore fishing. The local beaches and the Marina are always worth a shot and can turn up some good fish. Exmouth is a great spot also and offers heaps of ahorebased options as well as a good charter boat fleet.

I think anywhere along the coast will blow your mind in comparison to the UK scene, you might be able to get that dirty big ray off of your avatarSmile

If you only have two weeks you won't have too much

Fri, 2009-01-16 19:01

time to stop over.
If I was heading to Broome under that sort of schedule and I didn't have a boat I would stop at Cararvon 1st night and try around the jetty area (About an 8 to 12 hour drive depending how fast you drive and how many stops you make). Even though the end of the jetty is yet to be repaired, there are still good fish being caught around the area.
Next stop would probably be Exmouth (about a half day drive I think). Plenty of jetties and to fish from and from some of the reports Adam has posted the marina is a great spot for a range of fish.
Next stop would be Point Samson (about another half day drive) where you could have a good chance for a Queenfish
Then it would be off to Broome, and depending on how long you stay in Broome, you could repeat the same trip and maybe swap Carnarvon for Kalbarri.
Remember, it is a long, long drive. It is very hot up north at this time of the year - so carry plenty of water. Keep an eye on Cyclone and local flooding reports and also be aware that they have massive todal changes up north. And if you are driving at night, or even in the evenings or early mornings, watch out for kangaroos, goats, emus, and a host of other critters that tend to run on the roads.

Cheers colin all good stuff

I will be travelling with with my wife so it wont be fishing all the time, also will only have a hire car so no offroading..unfortunately!  Dont have to drive back as flying from broom to NZ so that will give me a bit more time and will defo not drive at night as my mate hit a roo a few years back and it cost him  a few quid!!  Your advice sounds ace but what sort of species could I expect to catch if lady luck shines down??

Cheers mate
