Where to stay in Augusta?

Hi there! In January we are heading to Walpole for 7 days, then thinking of Augusta for a couple of nights..then off to Dunsbrough for a couple of nights. Anyone recommend chalets to stay in while at augusta. Also have they a good boat ramp there?? cheers

they have a timber ramp and its not too far out to the islands , never fished there but i have seen some good fish taken . my uncle used to fish there all the time when he had a boat and i think you would get plenty of herring and whiting as well, larger fish would be b/bums , queen snap and things like that and even the odd dhui , just gotta look for ground. just watch out for the old jetty pilons but you can see the line they are in as lots are still sticking out of the water

Ramp

Mon, 2009-10-19 21:04

Check out the "WA boating facilities"on this site.At this time of the year swell can be a problem and the ramp is usually veeerry slippery so put your hubs in at the top of the ramp before launching.
There are a few cottages on the road from Augusta to Hamelin bay, forget their names but the crayfishermen who stop there during the season speak well of them.I think one has "blue wren"in its name.

There is a boat ramp at

Mon, 2009-10-19 21:52

There is a boat ramp at flinders bay, very narrow, also there is a ramp  the colour patch cafe but acess to ocean is extremely limited. the mouth is too shallow. there is the town jetty also which is ok but as i said ocean acess is limited. fishing in the river now days is no good due to lack of tidal flow. the mouth has slowly been closing up and all the ocean fish that use to come in the river have been shut out. there is also a ramp at Hamelin bay if the winds on augusta are no good.

there is 2 caravan parks and plenty of accomadation just check out the local realestate agents.

There are now newly built

There are now newly built reasonably flash chalets at Hamo bay CP - which is a very nice Cp anyway.  Think I put a few pics of the ramp in the thread that carnarvonite mentioned.  The swell at Hamo bay is the biggest issue with launch and retrieve.  You can hand feed 'very' big stingrays on the beach too.

The Augusta bakery van visits at about 9am too - listen out for the car horn.

Cheers Pete

Wade, Check out Molloy

Tue, 2009-10-20 08:20

Wade, Check out Molloy Caravan Park.

About 6km upriver from town and it is an outstanding place to stay. It has its own boat ramp and superb bream fishing all along the nearby stretch of the Blackwood.

It is also a nice ride down river to fish the inlet or to go to the Augusta pub.

Plenty of spots to fish, we generally get some nice whiting, tailor (in summer) and obvioulsy bream

We stay there a couple of times a year and it really is a great little spot ............... as Darryl Kerrigan (The Castle) would say ."Ahh the serenity"

Colour Patch Cafe

Wed, 2009-10-21 07:20

If you stop in for fish and chips at the Colour Patch---DO NOT park your car in the 2 bays right in front. Some one only has to toss one chip to the sea gulls and your car will be covered in s%#t,hundreds of the buggers sit on the cars waiting for the next offering.

Hey wade,

Just my two cents worth mate. We stayed at Molloy Island CVP last January. (Australia Day Long weekend). It was the worst trip we've had down there. Park was full of ski boat yobbos with no sense of ramp etiquette and million dollar stereos on their boats that they had to play all the way through the park. Turner's in Augusta proper would be my pick. Sorry if I've offended any ski boat yobbos. You can always travel up the river for the bream anyway, it's a nice trip.

Archie, we were at Molloy

Thu, 2009-10-22 08:01

Archie, we were at Molloy the weekend before Australia Day and there were a quite a few ski boats (with the $$$$ stereos) but in reality we experienced no drama at all. We still caught plenty of fish and got a good nights sleep

I do hear that it is a good idea to give the place a miss over Oz Day weekend but.

Off peak times is when the Molloy really hits its straps in regard to peace and quiet.

Just that long weekend..

Thu, 2009-10-22 19:44

I reckon you guys are right about the long weekend. Apparently the Blackwood Waterskiing Club owns half the park and the Oz Day Long weekend is a big event. We were just unlucky. I got all my KG's downriver in the middle of town anyway. There were some stonking black bream at the cleaning tables too. Good luck with the trip Wade, it's a beaut part of the world.
