Where Would You Go?
Hey all
Im looking at moving out of perth for a year or so come half way through this year and am trying to decide where to go so that I can start making arrangments. These are the options I have.
- Canarvon
- Albany
- Derby
- Geralton
- Port Headland
- Bunbury
- Northam
- Narrogin
I'm thinking to get the most of a new experience I should look to go far enough away from Perth that driving back isn't going to be something that I can do every weekend. I was wondering if people could please give me their thoughts on these places and even give me suggestions on where they would go. None of them are really small towns im assuming but I would also like to know how it is socially because I'll be moving on my own and am going to have to slip into the community some how without knowing anyone is any of the towns.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
Thanks :)

Yer im more inclined to move
Yer im more inclined to move north because the work will be better for me but I can see what your saying about the south regarding social life, a few people have said it to me.
Fishing is a definite incentive at the moment though, havent caught anything decent in ages haha

Dude it depends on what your
Dude it depends on what your interests are. Albany is a great place to live providing you dont mind cooler/cold weather. The winters down there wouldnt be as cold as Narrogin but alot wetter. I lived in Albany for about 5 years myself and like most non city towns you have to invent your own fun. Fishing and camping is a major bonus with albany as there a heaps of places to go and explore. They have a very competitive sporting setup down there with footy, cricket, bball etc etc. They have about 12 pubs 2 nightclubs, quite a few resturaunts and heaps of winerys locally and in the surrounding areas like denmark and Mt Barker.
Never lived in Northam used to stay with family on holidays that lived there when i was a kid. It has lots of pubs, it gets stinking hot in the summer as its in a valley. Far better places to live in my opinion. Sorry to anyone whos on this forum and lives there =P
Personally if you gonna bail from the city for a while, I'd head to the coast as it keeps your options open for recreational activities. Another thing to keep in mind is employment, i know albany can be tricky getting work down there. Obviously it depends on what trade/proffession your in too. Mate of mine lived in Geraldton for a while, hes a plumber by trade and was getting paid good $$$ for working up there.
Just remember country towns love their sport and pubs. South = cold and wet. North = Hot
Add the coast for more options =)
Thats my 2 cents hope it helps

Onslow
Onslow might be worth a thought. Good fishing and if BHP goes ahead with its LNG project there will be a lot of work there.
If you are heading north, dont' forget the weather situation and the cost. From November 1 through to probably May it is bloody hot and if you don't have aircon it can drive you nuts. But then late autumn through to mid Spring is fantastic.
It also costs a lot more in everyday costs the further north you go.
Of your northern choices I would select Port Hedland. Good fishing, good work opportunities.
All the best, Colin Hay

not going into witness protection program
im just getting a bit sick of perth and wouldn't mind a bit of a sea change, something beyond my comfort zone ya know.
With my job im going to have to work in one of those places in the next two years anyway so though might as well get going sooner then later.

Geraldton is a good option
But it may be close enough to be to much of a temptation to pop down on the weekends. Good weather and lots of fishing options, even if you don't have a boat or 4wd.

Just dont wanna go somewhere where no one is going to be interested new commers or something ya know.
Thanks Colin, ive been thinking about Geralton as a serious option. The town is fairly large as well isnt it.

From a fishing perspective
From a fishing perspective I'd say go to Derby, the social aspect might not be as good but when you're only away for one year who really cares about that crap?? Just enjoy the fishing that the wonderful area has to offer... mmm barra on tap :)

CANARVON
id say Canarvon but im also inclined to say Derby for both of there fishing possibilities. Northam is really out of my perspective because- no fishing-very hot-boring (iv only been there twice so havnt experienced the 'sights of
Northam)

Derby
Id go to Derby as well. Only a couple of hundred K's from Broome as well. You could really make it worthwhile up there as well especially as work is covering the costs. There are so many different areas to explore up that way that you may not want to come back.

Derby Get stuck into some
Derby
Get stuck into some Barra fishing for a while.
Not far from Broome when you want to Party out in the touro season
Canarvon
Get stuck into all types of fishing.
Not to far from Perth if you want to drive back.
Not as hot as the tropics and the shopping for food/fuel is more affordable then if you head north more.

Carnarvon. May be a bit
Carnarvon. May be a bit biased as it's near one of my favourite parts of the world, but plenty of world class shorebased and boat fishing close by, and it's not mental to drive back to Perth every now and then. I'm actually looking at a similar scenario with a choice of Jobs in Gero, Roeburn, Albany, Bunno or Broome. Probably go Roeburn/Live in Whickam.
