G'day All
I am wanting to try some jigging when i get to Exy this year.
Thinking of jigging deeper water for Reds and Rankins and any thing else willing to munch on a jig.
I don't own any jigs so was wondering what types and wieghts are best for what i want to do?????????
I have been looking at the new shimano butterfly jigs, are these any good?????
Any info greatly appreciated
Cheers Marc

yes
there are seriously tons of jigs you can try. Even halco now have the twistie and an assist hook for jigging!
Any baitfish imitations, the octa jigs, zest, shout - you could go on all day. Weight will depend on current and depth, but as usual its always best to go as light as possible. What size jig you use will depend on the day, so like all lures you need a range to cover your bases.
East way is to buy one a week in the lead up rather than buying them all in one hit.
For me personally, I like (read more confident) the octa jigs, just change the hooks on the smaller ones.

depending on current
anywhere from 400g down to 50g. The current in a lot of cases is the determining factor moreso than depth - same as jigging sambos (albeit with a little more finesse!).

600g is pretty out of
600g is pretty out of control for 100-150m.
You not only have to try and match the jig for the depth and current, but for the fish.
You're not going to get a 80g flutter-style jig down in 150m for sambos, you probably just want a 200-400g tail-weighted jig for that.

When I fished out of Sharks
When I fished out of Sharks Bay last year, I used a large white lead head jig on a 80lb leader about 800mm long, this was my weight as well as a hook, this was run back to a large swivel, then I run a second shorter leader from the swivel down to another hook about a third of the length of the leader down to the leadhead. Fished really well without any twists or tangles and caught plenty.
Cheers
