Window Fishing!
With the horrible Summer howling Easterlys then the swing to a horrible howling seabreeze there's not much inbetween. That gap i call "Window Fishing" and i suppose that's better than not getting out at all and that's what i've been doing of late!
I've been targetting the Big Offshore KG and doing well. These plump fish have been 45-60cm in length and go hard on driftbaing outfits. The Window is a great time to get into these fish with not too much travelling also so more Window time to fish and the feed just superb!
A few pic's from Thursdays trip, we got a feed but i spent a fair bit of the Window time to gain new KG spots so that I dont hammer my current spots.....farming!
Carls a tall bugger so he dewarfs these plump KG's

Makes the heart flutter when you see it surface - such an awesome eating fish.
Out of interest, what size hooks are you snelling for them? And which issue is your KG article in?

Top fish Ryan. I'm yet to
Top fish Ryan. I'm yet to get into KG's of that calibre. Will have to grab the mag to read the article. However as a rough guide could you answer a few Q's mate?
1) Looks like you have been both drift baiting (mulie?) and traditional padernoster (squid)? What works best?
2) What depth and type of ground have you been finding these monsters?
cheers mate,
Ado

KG info!
Thanks Ado, i use my driftbaiting outfit but i use a patternoster rig (sinker on bottom) with two sneeled 2/0 Hoodlum hooks off each three-way swivel (i use 2x threeways)
Skinned ocky as bait and as for type of grounds & depth, he's a piece from my WAFM "KG" article;
Preferred grounds.
The areas that KG’s live are very extensive and they’re adaptable. The old saying that big KG’s hunt in pairs is very true especially in the slightly shallower waters like 8-20m. The further you go offshore the more the ground tends to flatten out and the KG’s can actually be more plentiful than people may expect. They do actually school up and in certain area’s they can be plentiful. If you get a red hot bite and you’re pulling up plenty of these silver missiles then “limit your catch” not “catch your limit” as they may not be around next time.
I’ve found offshore KG’s prefer the grounds in depths of say 20-40m but as all ready mentioned you can get them deeper but trying to target them is harder. These offshore kidney slappers can be found around several different types of ground. The first type of ground is hard broken ground with coral weed growth that can stand say half a metre to 1m high. This habitat has the entire food source that they prefer like pistol shrimp, coral crabs, worms and small crustaceans.
The second type is similar ground but having a small lump mixed in which is the other ideal structure to hold big KG’s. The flip side to this second option is the likely hood of the humble Dhufish and big Queen Snapper that can take your KG offering by surprise.
** Plenty more info in my feature article Ado, enjoy **

Very helpful - with thanks
Very helpful - with thanks Ryan. I have tried without success to find em thus far in deeper water (20m+). I do have some marks I was given but yet to venture that "bit further" so to speak.
Do you ever get KG's and Sandies on the same ground? I ask as I have been absolutely hammered by nice sandies and - I guess you could say "distracted" thus far. Not a KG on these patches for me thus far - hence the questions.
Cheers mate,
Ado

wow ive never caught big
wow ive never caught big KG's in the metro area..let alone in that depth.
Down south we do get 45cm-60cm KG's in 3-4m of water (Sometimes shallower) but not around metro.
Will have to give this a crack for sure!!!
Only thing is, i dont know how to tell what flat coral looks like on the sounder :(
