Yeagarup

The annual pilgrimage (in it's second year for most of us) to Yeagarup is coming up in a few weeks time. Hopefully there will be a few salmon around. We didn't see much else caught last year - just a few herring and one very juvenile flathead.

From your own experiences are we likely to catch much else as a bycatch of chasing salmon - eg. sharks or by some stroke of luck that old elusive mulloway? Is it worth fishing at night there?

Thanks,

Buschy

I have heard of Mulloway

Mon, 2011-03-21 18:21

I have heard of Mulloway being caught there and seen pics of them. Other than that i usually fish there around August September for Gummy Sharks. Get a few each trip at night. Squid seems to be a good bait for them. I usually do the Salmon pilgramage there too every year, but never seem to catch anything at night when they are running.

We also take the pilgrimage

We also take the pilgrimage every year as well Buschy. Been going  for 10 years now, you can catch Mulloway at night, trick is to keep the bait fresh, found salmon fillets work best, but be ready for long nights of waiting for nothing. Only by catch tends to be Herring, Tarwine and as you mentioned the odd small flattie. Last year found it to be the best Salmon run to date. Hoping the water temp drops soon for this year. might see you down there if you are heading down after Easter.

Thank you, I tried to attach

Thank you, I tried to attach a map from another website in my post but it failed.

Do I understand that it is a beach fishing only kinda destination?

Close to Houptown is a beach called by the locals Salmon beach, would that be another good spot for trying to hook up on the schools of migrating fish?

Sorry I am as green as but trying to learn.

Sharks in surf?

Tue, 2011-03-22 20:15

Thanks everyone for the advice....I will definately have a crack at soaking a bait one evening in hope that a big croaker comes along.

I know that the noahs often tail the salmon schools but am I right in saying they will not come into the surf zone? I was always under the impression that they will only be in calmer water as they don't like sand in the gills too much. Yeagarup is one of those places where even my best cast won't get past the surf.

Thanks again,

Buschy

have certainly seen (and caught) sharks in the surf zone. Much better chance if you scored a day with low swell though. If you found where a gutter empties back out to deep water i reckon your in with a shot even in good surf.

Cheers Buschy,

Actually Nelly showed me an article from western angler the other day about chasing big sharks around the salmon schools. Got me pretty excited for this season.

Hope you get into some mate!
