Yellow Fin Tuna
Submitted by Billybuchman on Thu, 2011-03-10 15:52
Hi all - couldn't resist posting a pic of my Yellow Fin from out the back of Rotto last Friday...
Caught on a spinning rig with 20lb braid. He tipped the scales at a whisker over 40lbs bled and completely burnt out and seized the drag after the first massive run. Pretty happy to get him in the boat.
Cheers,
James

Nice yellowfin. Would have been awesome fun on a spinning reel.
As soon as I saw the thread I knew the fish would be 18kg :p. Seems to be a very common size for YFT off perth. Same with the bluefins, you tend to get the 2-3kg schools and then the 7-8kg schools, but not much inbetween or bigger. Nearly all the YFT's i've heard off perth have been 20kg. Anyone know what the explanation is? (guessing they hang around different spots at different life stages, and before and after that weight they're hanging around elsewhere).

Dont know about recently, but
Dont know about recently, but the YFT records were beaten last year at 90kg or so. I think the bigger ones are up kalbarri/shark bay-ish. I've caught 6-7kg ones at the abrolhos. Just seems the overwhelming majority in Perth are 18-20kg (though diff sizes in the rest of the state).

one confirmed 40~45kg YFT
one confirmed 40~45kg YFT taken off the trench, word is by a PGF boat.
so not long before we see 50kg+++ fish in the waters with the warm currents and schools coming in close.
Long liners & deepwater netters will tell you there is big tuna out wide and deep, but for some reason they don't come in to that 50~70km range of the coast we can reach with our boats.
Then again, back in SAFFA land we would go 50miles out to sea to get big tuna off Cape Point, maybe we not going far enough out and looking in the right spots...

Yeah they were taken off
Yeah they were taken off Exmouth by some junior Anglers, I think the boat might have been reel teaser??? Just remember seeing them on the front of hot bite they were massive!! Would love to get stuck into one.

Great tuna!
Conditions dont look like they were too bad out there either.
What sort of depth were you in?
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Great fish. I know that would have gone hard on spinning gear. Top capture.

nice and sweatttttttttt
nice and sweatttttttttt Finaly hope for good sized game fish in Perth Metro at last.
and a good size for change. I miss big YFT that we get in SAFFA land.
And can you think what it would have been like if it was a 80kg one...lol... THEY FIGHT HARD!!!!
I blew up a TLD25 with 50lb mono on it back in 2003 on a YFT, smoked me, the reel and took all the line with it!!!
Well done.
