Then another young lad piped up "Well, actually the rate of technological increase is happening more rapidly now, so the current generations are actually coming up with more technological improvements than older ones".
(Besides, I dont know how many 20-somethings invented tv's, planes, rockets, computers, mobile phones, etc anyways. Give them more time :p)

No, I woulda also ripped the younger guy as well :p.
To be arrogant and not know better due to ignorance is better than to remain arrogant despite knowing better (or at least have enough time and ability to know better).
Seems that its a common thing for any generation to complain about other generations (particularily younger ones) while forgetting their generation was just like that once (even if they dont recognise it for various years). Its gone on from millenia. There are always people from each generation who think that their generation was the apex (better than all previous ones, but all future ones have degnerated). Again, this has gone on for a multitude of generations. If you think your generation is special, it probably is, buts its just as special as every other generation was or will be. If you think you're generation is above that, it's not

go look through history and
go look through history and see how young the inventors were of many of the great break throughs... today you won't see a man walk on the moon in your life time probably... I did. you can't fly supersonic any more with the Concord gone... youre back to 800km/hr! not Mach2 like my generation could fly. Hell half of the squad can't drive a car anymore without an electronic aid from keeping them out of hospital. so go out there and invent better ways to breed sea fish and we will forgive you all....lol

Perhaps you should look into
Perhaps you should look into the concorde and supersonic flight and you might understand why "we're back to 800" (as if its a step backwards). As for driving, road accidents are actually down by over a factor of three (in fatalities/100,000) so something has improved.
Just to be clear before I reply to the first bit, are you implying that inventors of great break throughs in history were young or not young?
Just you see what gets invented in terms of healthcare particularly over the next decade or two
(and as for seeing someone on the moon: India, Japan, China, the EU and Russia all have proposals in for getting manned missions to the moon sometime between 2020 and 2030, so might not be that unlikely...
not to mention the possibility of Mars).

Younger ones are a bit
Younger ones are a bit better at looking after the fish stocks though. What I saw a group of Grey Nomads doing this weekend was disgusting.

What was the comment some
What was the comment some older guy said?
"When I was younger, we used to go to the three mile and we'd pile so many dhuies in the tinny that we could barely move, and we'd do it every weekend. I wonder why we cant do that any more"
To be fair though, it was probably some older people who first decided we needed to do something about changing attitudes to keeping fish and implement measures to acheive this. On the other hand, the younger generation has a much better mentality in terms of sustainability. Theres always different things to different sides, and whatever the generalisation is, you can guarantee there will still be lots of people who break that generalisation.

today many of the young
today many of the young engineers and boffins can't do squat unless a computer model tell them it's ok.
This was admitted by Marsha Erwin’s, five times NASA shuttle astronaut, when asked why it is taking us so long to get back to the moon.
In fact she also went on to say the present computer models and simulations say that a Saturn rocket would not get there and back reliably!... yeah right tell that to the 12 missions that went there....
Todays youth needs to learn how to develop, think and do things without 30gigabyes of crap strapped to their desk. Tell me about it, as this week alone we have had some real blowers that where computer errors and carried out by the young blind.
To think is to be human, to F-up completely you need you computer!
go to a school today and take away their spell checkers and calculators, then give them a final year school paper from 25 years ago and see what happens...

Not really dodgy
think people in all government systems (schools mainly) as well have got lazy. I listen to kids doing wheelies in their cares while trying to go to sleep, all these kids have automatic gear boxes, so easy to do a wheelie. In my day you had to know how to slip the clutch in a 3 speed manual box, learn how to hold the clutch just right to do the best wheelie hahahahah yes I was a rev head when I was 17yrs old loved my V8 but we used to find a old country rd and do wheelies and the standard quarter mile drag, with people at either end looking out for traffic, think each generation is good. I certainly wouldn't have liked to have been born to be old enough to go to war or see my sons go off to the 1st or 2nd war let alone Korea or Vietnam. Each generation has its pit falls, no use blaming a past generation, as all generations have had failures.

Roll backs
Doing roll back burn outs with a non synchro 1st gear. Wind it up in reverse, clutch in, from reverse to second then back to first, revs up and dump clutch left foot from clutch pedal to brake pedal to feather the brakes and away you go.When going for licence copper asked it it was me who drove hot rods said yes and he said I'll get my licence no worries. Drove him 100 yards down to chemists and he told me to double park as no empty bays, he went in to chemists to collect prescription, did a Uey then back to cop shop where he wrote out licence. No question, no P plates or any other restrictions.
No driving instructors then, learn to drive down bush tracks while collecting firewood and progressed to Blicks raceway just over Collie river bridge in Eaton racing old bombs--36 ford, 48 Desoto, Fj holdens and early Vauxhalls.
Modern methods vs old school, was shark fishing down south and had set nets some 20nm north of Dunsborough. Next morning when leaving mooring Gps would work, son[Decky] asked how will we find gear? No worries, leave it to me and go and have a sleep. Hour later gave him a call to start looking for flag on end of line, we were with in 400metres of it. He asked how did I do it, easy remembered yesterdays course in plus time it took to get it. Reversed compass course, same speed and time. When I first started we did it the same way with only an old alarm clock and a rev counter on the engine to judge speed by and wrote it all down in log book along with rough sketch of landmarks if visible.

never mind making up tempt dog-shaft in the garrage from some old steel tube and getting the car running to make sure your mate does not steal your date on Saturday night.
my first motor cycle was a 50cc Honda SS50 4 stroke, and it came in a box in a thousand pieces, Dad said, you want it, you build it... three weeks later it fired and off we went.

Todays generation...mmm if it' can't be done on the Playstation or Wii, then it's not possible ..lol.
point of the thread is every generation thinks the ones before had no idea how it works or is tech savy...
What I wonder is will the next generation be able to take the ball and run to the next level.
Now not iPhones and gizmos, but break throughs.
Things that change the world for ever.
What will be the next transport break through?
or energy...will the solar panel get to be useful and portable?
this all started after I watched the last few New Inventors shows on ABC and saw how the majority of inventors are retired old buggers or guys like me ( over the hill in age ...lol )
when I was young I wanted to be an engineer, build big things and do great things. Today we have many young bloods that just want a good time and cash in the account.
As for building crappy bikes, well passing on that skill to my 10year old son, he is already learning to strip, rebuild and fix his 50cc. I buy him little electronic kits and things he has to think and build with. his Playstaion is an entertainment device, not his life.

Im 31 years old..i dont know whats considered young, but im definatly young at heart, probably just like you.
ive had bikes all my life too, and spent many weekend and evenings in the back shed with my dad working on one of his many vintage bikes.
My dads gone but i still have one of his bikes, its a BSA wm20. I have since restored a couple myself.
I too was given my first bike in peices it was a honda z 50, colapsable handle bars and all, and although i didnt do the work myself i did look on in awe as i watched my old man work. He was a Blacksmith and a farrier which is another dying trade, so needless to say, due to his guidence im quite malleable with metal if you'll pardon the pun.
I doubt ill ever re-invent the wheel, or pilot a shuttle to space but i dont judge anyone buy how smart they are only by thier actions. The bloke who works the shovel on the side of the road, is just as important as the bloke who does the maths to get us to space.
Were all cogs in the wheel.

I agree as well. Im 31 so stuck in between a bit. One thing that does suprise me is the amount of trucking companys that are switching to Autos because the younger guys cant get used to Roadrangers and do too much damage.
If you want to drive a Auto, try a Falcon Taxi.
Im out of the game now but get a couple of weeks behind the wheel in every year just to keep the skills up and think there is nothing better than a well driven 18 speed. Becoming a rarity unfortunately.

old fart used to spit chips when he come back from holidays and somebody (older or younger) had been in his truck, missing gears etc. Took him over a week to get the gear box right in the two trucks he drove, (mechanic used to love him never had to change clutch or brakes on the prime mover) 13 or 19 speed road ranger, he too still keeps his finger in the pie, driving his mates truck every now and then (MC license)

If they cant drive them then who is teaching them? Those younger guys arent the ones responsible for ensuring the drivers are up to scratch. I look at the older generations 1 step better than neanderthals
You had big families and never got the treatment from your mother like families do these days. (breeds total selfishness). You're too busy worrying about yourself to even give a shit about your offspring..( as far as your concerned every man for himself!)..You start to wonder why said children are saying fuck you and the community is in a total mess!
And you're too selfish and ignorantly stubborn to even think you were the cause!!

All it takes to make sure that the words you speak now won't bite you in the you-know-where later on, is to pay attention and think. Are these words coming from you? Or from your inner brat? Is there more potential harm than benefit from saying these words?

For what started out as a joke
along the way there have been some nasty undertones creeping in and despite some excellent contributions and comments in general (I especially liked some of Ruste's comments) this is actually turned into a really stupid case of one upmanship.
Is it not abundantly clear to everyone that we are all going to be young, middle aged and old at one stage of our lives, we are all going to be the fresh new generation, the boring parental generation and then the really old "back in my day" grandpa generation whether its now, 50 years ago or 50 years from now. (I'm getting close to the grandpa generation now...)
Each generation and age group contributes to society in the context of the time in which they inhabit this planet. Remember that as time goes on we will all be measured by what we do with our lives, the people we influence and the way in which we influence them.
I for one now have the highest "RESPECT" for those generations that went before me (to be fair I didnt always have that view but that was because I was once one of the "know it all" generation that exists between the ages of 15 and 25 no matter what year you were born in) We have all been there and we have all done that.
But more importantly as a father I also have the highest "RESPECT" " for my kids and the things that they will have to deal with that are going to be unique to their generation.
Cheers

Just to be clear: no nasty
Just to be clear: no nasty undertones from me and no attempted oneupsmanship. Contrary to many people, I don't think any generation is inherently better or worse than others (though lots of people think theirs is the best, better than all before and future- but that's because they're in it :p).
So hopefully my comments aren't taken the wrong way (but they almost inevitably are...)
And contrary to popular belief, I don't think I know it all (or even close- would be pretty naive/ignorant to think I did) but forums are for discussion so attempt to discuss I will :p
