okie dokie..... i think its a amberjack but please correct if wrong... got 2 big sambos yesterday but this big puppy jumped on and madddde me piss..... had more girth and was shit load thicker across the shoulders than a sambo no markings to speak of was a lovely goldish tinge when caught and head looked a lil different... if it is a amberjack first one for me so stoked... another plastic on 6kg victim.... just a guess but i rekon it was 15kg very easily would give it more.... cheers poddy

I'd guess AJ as well
really a great looking fish, its a shame that you cant really target them as such and they tend to be more of a by-catch type of fish.
I've been told the "easiest" way to tell an AJ and sambo apart is dorsal fin rays: Aj has 30+, sambos 20 odd. No idea how accurate it is, personally I couldn't see myself being arsed counting them.

Sure you can, barges, out of
Sure you can, barges, out of sambo season ;)
Might still get some sambos, but then you can get pinkies if targetting dhuies anyways.

Amberjack, but it does look
Great fish there poddy! Must of gone hard, especially on the light gear (amberjacks will outpull a sambo IMO)
Amberjack, but it does look a little more 'snub-nosed' than they usually are.
You can tell by the yellow eye and the more rounded head. Sambos have a bit of a 'bump' on their head, while amberjacks are a smooth curve, and more streamlined. You can do a dorsal count if you want. Though that one does look a bit stockier than i've seen. Bit odd that it was bigger across the shoulders than a sambo, but individual fish vary.
Colourwise, amberjacks tend to have yellow stripes, and a stripe through they eye, and tend to be a more uniform, lighter colour (hard to explain, but sambos tend to have darker tints and more uneven). Sambos have blotches, sometimes. If it has blotches, its a sambo, if it doesnt, it could be either.
Have a look at the comparisons hear and you should get an idea of the difference in profiles.
Amberjack, and profiles one, two, three, four, five

nice fish poddy. I've been towelled up by a few 15kg sambos on the twinpower 4000 so the AJ's a great capture on the light stuff. Looks like a fair day for it too, fingers crossed for more of the same.
