snooze time

snooze time

This big boy was easy up in the 4m length and fat as hell.
We had heard they had quite a few ferrel pigs and even cows taken the last few weeks in the billabong by the big boys.

We spotted at least a dozen of them in less than 2km of river!!! and our Barra guide had warned that this year, it was suspected that as many as 1500 ones over 1,5m in size where in the upper reaches of the river and surrounding billabongs

big croc

Thu, 2008-10-30 13:48

tony, i'm 6 foot 4 and i have come accross croc slide marks in the mud that were wider than my arms outstretched.

was out on the mary river flood plains and we were on airboats, but nonetheless still big crocs. remember doing a wildlife survey (i am a biologist) at fogg dam. noticed some croc eggs next to a dugout under a papaerbark tree. decided to have a look inside and when i poked my head in a rather large female croc was smiling at me...needless to say i backed up rather quickly. went back the next day and she had moved..... she obviuosly didn't like my company.....

so how goes the NT adventure. the weather heating up so should the barra. not sure who you working for up there but if ya get the chance get into radon springs for a look. usually have to walk in.

hot in Jabiru

Thu, 2008-10-30 15:15

Damo, I'm in Jabiru at ERA for some commissioning work on an upgrade we just did. ( Yeah i'm a bad boy engineer that exploits the uranium boom times...lol )
I have had a chance to explore quite a bit of the East, South and West Aligator rivers so far. Next weekend I'm trying to get out on the Mary river next. And you right, some dam big flat-dogs around here!!!
I have also been up to some of the waterfalls and high-water falls that you can safely swim in. This place is heaven for a biologist, so I can easily see why you'd miss the place.
I'll make a note to head out and try and find Radon Springs, not scared of a long walk, done a few of late.

cheers

ERA

i used to work at ERA also. in the enviro side though-mostly rehab/transplanting and biological survey stuff. was a contractor though. great place (great parties ha ha).

radon is just out the back of the mine west of Mt Brockman in the escarpment. should easily find on a map and well worth the walk. there used to be a dedicated track from the mine....

anyway keep posting pics and i am always homesick.....

cheers
