beginner fly reel up North
Submitted by crasny1 on Sun, 2009-01-25 17:17Need advice. Have 2 Airframe AF7/9 Okuma Fly reels that was great on Herring/taylor/salmon trout in Mandurah. Now I have been in Karratha for a year and Have not unpacked them. I also have a 6 wt NZ special (name I cant remember). Will these be good enough for light salt fly on 8-10wt or what should I get. I like the Armorlite construction but anybody got any idea about how good or bad they are.

Another Joke, To make day tick on over!!!
Submitted by Big J on Sun, 2009-01-25 13:072 Irishman were on location by the bay. So at lunchtime they hired a boat and went fishing. In half an hour they had a boat full of fish. The Skipper looked at his watch and said "We had better head back now." At which point his mate pulls the tape roll off his belt and puts a big X in the middle of the boat. His mate gives him a weird look and says, "What are you doing?" The fella replies,"WELL!! This is such a good spot, we want to be able to find it again." The Skipper shakes his head and says,"YOU IDIOT!!!! We might not get the same boat next time."

Blackwood Bream
Submitted by Stevef on Sat, 2009-01-24 14:13Hi, just got back from a couple of days camping with the Family by the Blackwood River near Augusta. It wasn't a fishing orientated trip but I got a couple of light sessions in over the time we were there.
Got 10 bream in total with smallest measuring 35cm and largest 42cm. Fish were caught on fresh tailor fillet and local live prawns. Tried some SP & hard bodies without any joy.
Kept this one (gut hooked) which measured 38cm, but released all the others as I couldn't be arsed cleaning them.
The Blackwood is a great place to fish, cant help but relax. Picture quality might be a bit ordinary as I only had my phone with me
Cheers

I know i will probably have to pay for like 50 so would it be easier to just bleach out a stencil on the shirt?

White Hills
Submitted by abandon on Fri, 2009-01-23 18:56Hi everyone,
Just thinking about a white hills fish this weekend. Never been there before got a few questions.
1. Do you need a 4wd? Looked at google maps and there looks to be a road (white hill road) that goes all the way to the beach. I have a Hilux but am an unexperienced 4WDer.
2. Does it get big swells? Looking for tailor and mulla and maybe salmon in a while, just wondering if i need weight on my rigs.
3. What other species can you catch there?
That's about it guys, any info would be much appreciated.
Have a great long weekend! Gotta love this country!

Heading up to wedge this long weekend for some beach fishing (and drinking)
Wondering where the best place to fish is? is there gutters, reef holes etc?
Spose Mulloway, Tailor and Herring are the usual haunts?

New Saltiga
Submitted by Colin Hay on Thu, 2009-01-22 18:52I know there a few tackle junkies out there who may be able to answer this question.
I tuned in late to a fishing show last evening and they were jigging for Sambos off Hillarys.
The host was using a red Saltiga spinning reel and he was saying it was a soon to be released version with all new drag.
Does anyone know anything about these reels?
I can't find anything on the Daiwa site I went to,
many thanks, Colin Hay

Monties in April
Submitted by big john on Thu, 2009-01-22 17:48Starting to bounce an idea around in my head about heading up to the Monties in my boat for part of the April school holidays.
I know there's a few crew on here who have done it on recreational vessels so what I'm after is any pointers they may have for such a trip. For example what not to bother taking, what things you consider essential, is there much travelling involved once there to get into fish (fuel?????), good camping locations etc.
Obviously its not something to be taken lightly, due to the distances involved as well as the need to be completely self sufficient. I would prefer to head up with another boat or two, so if your keen on maybe exploring the option of doing a serious sportfishing and spearing trip in your own well equipped and reliable, seaworthy vessel let me know via PM and we'll see what we can do. I will be departing from Onslow.
Sorry, not looking for any crew at this stage.

questions on tailor fishing
Submitted by speedo on Thu, 2009-01-22 14:09hi guys,
i've been fishing the river for a while, using plastics and lures with some success and i am now willing to try and get some fish from the sea!!problem is i've been trolling lures and throwing big poppers around in Mauritius and don't know how to fish in oz..
i have a 10' silstar and a matching shakespeare reel with 15lb mono on it. I'd like to get into some tailor and would like some advice as last night the guys around me were catching a few and i wasn't getting interest from the fish! i tried the moles and would like to try beach fishing, however i don't know the does and don't of beach fishing in perth and i don't want to annoy swimmers...
what set-up to use? what rig? what hook size? what bait? and where?
are metal slices worth a try or should i buy bait?
any special technique or retrieve? let it sit there or retrieve it?
as well is there any time and moon phase when the odds are better?
last question how to rig a bait with ganged hook for it to stay straight on the hooks?
any help or advice would be much appreciated, anything you don't want to post PM please
thanks guys

Pinaroo Point heads up
Submitted by Colin Hay on Thu, 2009-01-22 10:30I dropped down to Pinaroo Point for a spur of the moment fish last night. Unfortunately the wind was howling, which made fishing conditions less than ideal.
However, I did manage a few herring, one of them the biggest I have ever caught.
There seemed to be a heap of herring down there as I caught my fish on 5/0 gangs chasing tailor - and I missed a lot of fish.
So if you are keen for a herring feed I would suggest you give Pinaroo some thought,
All the best, Colin

Submitted by tommytomato on Wed, 2009-01-21 12:05Shovel Nose Sharks
What are the pro's and con's on catching or hooking into a Shovel Nose Shark.
how do you handle them, how do they feel when hooked, are they a danger, what baits are used and what rigs are use to hook these speices.
I'm planinng on fishing the South beaches near me for mulloway and I wish to know alittle more about these Shovel Nose Sharks.
any one care to fill us in on these Shovel Nose Sharks, may be a photo or two please.
