Does anyone know if they are going to stock the new lake?
Submitted by Colin Hay on Tue, 2008-08-05 16:30Lake Kepwari set for summer opening
There’s good news for the South-West, with Lake Kepwari expected to open this summer.
South-West Minister Mark McGowan said plans to transform the former mining void into one of Western Australia’s biggest freshwater recreational lakes were moving forward.
“With the planning phase complete and the partial surrender of the mining lease back to the State imminent, progress is now being made on finalising designs and tender documentation,” Mr McGowan said.
“We anticipate a late summer opening and that means water-skiers can enjoy everything the lake has to offer.”
Lake Kepwari, 10km east of Collie, is a mining void that has been rehabilitated by Wesfarmers Premier Coal.
It holds about 30 gigalitres of water and is almost two kilometres long, one kilometre wide and up to 70m deep.
Collie-Wellington MLA Mick Murray said plans for the first stage of the project included the development of a boat launching area, swimming beach, parking area, barbecues and shelters.
“There has been strong interest in the project from a number of water recreation groups,” Mr Murray said.
“The lake will be a drawcard to the South-West and raise the profile of Collie.
“It will complement the highly successful Collie Motorplex that was also supported by the State Government in partnership with Wesfarmers Premier Coal.
“It is set to become the centre for water-based recreation in the region.”
The project has received $3.29million from the State Government towards construction of infrastructure and management of the site.

New advisory committee appointed to manage the Abrolhos Islands
Submitted by Colin Hay on Tue, 2008-08-05 16:24Fisheries Minister Jon Ford has increased community representation on the advisory committee that manages the Houtman Abrolhos Islands.
Six new members have been appointed to the Abrolhos Islands Management Advisory Committee, along with three returning members and chairman Peter Driscoll, whose term continues.
The new members include Perth Zoo Animal Health and Research Director Dr Helen Robertson; air charter operator-owner Caroline Pettet; charter vessel operator Leonie Noble; Tourism WA Industry Development and Visitor Servicing Executive Director Jennifer Duffecy; trucking company owner-operator Heather Jones and charter vessel owner-operator Jay Cox.
The returning members are recreational fisher Bevan Suckling; Abrolhos Islands commercial rock lobster fisher Kris Carlberg and pearl farm lease co-owner Martin Jurat.
Mr Ford said the committee traditionally had a strong focus on commercial rock lobster fishing. However, given concerns about impacts from rising visitor numbers and the expansion of tourism activity at the islands, he had increased the committee’s membership from nine to 10, to enlist more expertise in these areas and allow more local representation.
The Abrolhos Islands and their surrounding waters are an A-class reserve and a fish habitat protection area respectively. Both are vested in the Minister for Fisheries for the conservation of flora and fauna, tourism and purposes associated with the fishing industry.
The Minister said the islands’ special values included a rich marine ecosystem, combining both temperate (cool water) flora and fauna and tropical coral reef habitat; internationally significant seabird rookeries and some of WA’s most significant marine archaeological sites and early 17th century Dutch shipwrecks.
“The Department of Fisheries runs a research centre on Rat Island and has four dedicated field staff who spend 140 days a year on the islands,” Mr Ford said.
“The Abrolhos Islands offer a unique combination of marine and terrestrial diversity, as well as a rich history and important fishing grounds.
“The Department of Fisheries, which manages both the land and marine systems of the islands, is therefore taking steps to ensure that increasing visitor numbers are managed without causing detriment to the environment.
“For example, the department recently built 22 public moorings to reduce anchor damage while ensuring boat safety and access to dive sites and it also conducted a major maintenance program for the islands’ three airstrips.”
Mr Ford said the newly appointed advisory committee would continue the previous committee’s work in overseeing a review of the Abrolhos Islands Management Plan.

Two Rocks - Help wanted
Submitted by Paul N on Tue, 2008-08-05 11:53Went out from Two Rocks yesterday ( monday) for the first time. Got there at 7am and was the first boat in. As I have never fished there before and with no other boats around at the time I had no idea where to start fishing. Ended up fishing out west on direction bank as the weather was good. Got a couple of dhuies but nothing to brag about. There were a few trailers back at the ramp when we got in at 4.30pm but we did not see any boats on the water all day. That may indicate we were fishing in the wrong spot.
Looking for advice on the area. Where to start for a chance of a dhuie or snapper. Is it lumps or flat coral I should be looking for. Is there ground worth a try a bit closer in. Is it better north or south of the marina.
Any help would be great.

Dhuies wont play ball!
Submitted by Rodrat on Tue, 2008-08-05 11:11Hi All
Headed out from point peron yesterday (monday) with a mate
hoping to catch a dhuie on some new ground we had found
in around 28 meters. Did a few drifts and we caught
Harlis, Black Bums, Sargent Bakers, Whiting,Skippy, Snapper but no Dhuies!
The black bums and skippy loved the soft plastics. My mate also caught a
big KG,Harli and a pike on the sp's.
Was a great day weather and fish wise and great to be out on the water.
We seem to find the right type of ground but never pick up dhuies.
Are we in too shallower water? Any advise or tips?
Thanks

The mouth was broken and the river was very low, alot of dirty water in the ocean, looks like mulloway territory.
Heres the biggest and the rest will be in here - http://fishwrecked.com/image/tid/125

Curious, your thoughts & what will you be doing?
Submitted by Anonymous on Sun, 2008-08-03 12:16Okay, with the new Gov Ban being put in place soon, I'm curious to see your thoughts & what will you be doing?
(1) Will you sell your boat?
(2) Will this ban reduce your amount of trips out?
(3) Will you be targetting other species, if so what type?
(4) Will you travel North more during the ban?
(5) Will interest rates & fuel cost be "more" of a factor than the ban?
(6) Will this reduce your spending at your local tackle store, if so what amount ie small/fair bit/or alot?
If "all" can be answered it would be appreciated and Thanks in advance!

SOMETHING HAS TO BE DONE!!!!!!!
Submitted by brenz on Sat, 2008-08-02 09:18Im sick to death of going down to the river now to popular places such as whyndam bridge belmont maylands the list goes on to find that (not being racist at all)some of our overseas friends poaching numbers of bream that are simply finominal sometimes 30 at a time with atleast %50 undersize , this is just going to far now ,we try to educate them and the plead they dont understand english or simply just smile and say GOODBYE. why dont fisheries start deploying officers in large numbers to these popular places to nab some of them. I can almost guarentee if you go to the upperswan you will find ghost nets etc gettin put out . you ring the fisheries to bring this to there attention to no prevail every time so why bother. do officers operate at night if not maybe they should cause we have to find a solution to this quik smart before we wipe out our fast dieing river system.

Submitted by wicksey on Fri, 2008-08-01 10:51Hi guys,
Did anyone pick one of these up the other day? They went on sale yesterday and were all gone by the time I got there last night.
Luckily I called up the day before and put 2 on hold, one for the missus and the other a spare.
Any reports on them at all? 7' single piece graphite, 8-15lb line weight.
The guy said there would be 40 coming in next week, so maybe call up and get them to hold you one.

Exmouth - when to go
Submitted by Paul N on Thu, 2008-07-31 14:50Looking to get back up to Exmouth next year and was wondering what the best time of year is for lighter winds. Is there such a time ?
Always seems that when the gulf is calm the west side is blowing and vice versa and all in the same say.
Not quite sure if good weather equates to good fishing but more time on the water can't hurt.
Thanks

Mullaway and sand?
Submitted by Dreamweaver on Wed, 2008-07-30 10:48Question gang?
Something that's been bugging me for years on and off, and I finally recalled it whilst I was in here, so I'll pop the question:
Many years ago, my twin brother caught a mulla in shark bay somewhere, shore fishing.
He froze it and brought it home.
When we defosted it and prepared the fillet pieces, we noticed that there was sand right through the flesh - not just inside the sales, or just beneath the skin, but deep down and right through the flesh.
Any theories, thoughts, explanations why this would occur?
