CSIRO Sea Surface Temps

Hi All

I am not sure how many people here use the free CSIRO sea surface temperature website.  If you haven't heard of it click on the link and check it out

http://www.marine.csiro.au/remotesensing/oceancurrents/index.htm

It is very useful info to see where the warm water currents are.  On this linked page you wil see a message from the CSIRO regarding a petition to get help with funding of the site.

As fishos we can all benefit from this very useful site and it would be very worthwhile if you could all fill it in.  Simply click on the link and put your name down, it only takes a second.

Gus

EDIT: fixed URL address.  Thanks Colin.Embarassed

Busselton Jetty to receive immediate funding

The State Government has confirmed it will offer $24million over two years towards the restoration of the Busselton Jetty.

Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls today announced the package, designed to offer immediate aid to the jetty free from restrictions related to the sale of Busselton land.

Mr Grylls said that should the proposal be accepted by the Busselton Shire Council, work could be start on the jetty during summer.

“Obviously this is reliant on the shire’s approval and tender process, but the offer is a positive step forward to ensuring the iconic Busselton Jetty remains as both a tourism and a financial asset to the shire,” the Minister said.

“The funding is not conditional on land development and allows the shire to proceed with finalising tenders and starting work.”

Establishing a State Record?

This is not something I've actively thought about whilst fishing. But having caught my PB Breaksea at 50cm and, from AAAWA list ( http://www.aaawa.iinet.net.au/StateFishingRecords.html#_B ) showing the state record as 3.000 kg, I thought the one I caught MAY have come close. Unfortunately, I didn't weigh my catcg and the AAAWA doesn't give weights.

So, what's the process in establishing a record? Do your scales have to be of a certain type (standard) and what about line class etc?

I guess if you were in a club comp and had a weight in, it would be easier to accept validity, but what about as an individual?

Info guys?

Squidding - cockburn sound

Hey guys

I am keen to do some squidding, and the weather tomorrow looks the goods.

I am just wondering where do you launch down that way, as I have never done it?

Also while squidding can you target herring and other fish, is it the same area?

Thanks!

Fishwrecked Gear

Received my Fishwrecked gear I ordered only the other day, Hat/Cap/Singlet/Shirt.

I'm really happy with everything I ordered and it would be interesting to know how many other members have purchased and what they think of it?

Favoured landbased braid

Sorry for another braid thread, but I am intrested in what are the favoured braids used by landbased fishos in 10 to 20 lb range.
I purchased an expensive braid yesterday to spool on my new Abu Soron spin reel that, quite frankly, it is crap.
I am a fan of Bionic Braid. Any other suggestions?
Many Thanks, Colin Hay

Tailor Time

Excited by Sam, Ryan and Joe’s recent captures of some fantastic metro tailor I decided to head down to Cottesloe Groyne last night for a bit of a scouting mission.

With an easterly blowing initially, the conditions weren’t exactly perfect for big tailor, however, the water looked pretty good.

Under a low cloud cover I started off throwing some metal lures around the reef area on the south side of the groyne. That gave me the chance to try out my new Xzoga spin rod and Abu Garcia Soron STX 60, both of which worked just how I had hoped. Unfortunately, the tailor weren’t behaving the same way and after not having one follow after nearly an hour of lure tossing and with the light fading I decided it was time to switch over to baits.

It didn’t take long for the action to start and my mulie baits were hit and picked to pieces by what appeared to be a reasonable school of herring. That was confirmed when a family fishing further along the groyne from me started landing a few plump little herring.
Keen to chase the tailor, I stuck to my full mulie baits and eventually a decent hit eventuated. Unfortunately, whatever it was, managed to free itself after a short run. There was a fair chance it may have been a small stingray as some kiwi chaps towards the end of the groyne had hooked one just prior to that and were soon to hook onto another.

However, it wasn’t too long before the telltale bang, bang, bang of a tailor bite told me things were starting to look up.

It wasn’t one of the big winter tailor I was chasing, legal sized but a bit thin, but it was good to know that there were tailor there. After a quick de-hooking the fish was back in the water and I threw another bait out.

Bang, bang, bang. It seemed like another tailor bite, but this time it turned out to be an angry, snapping snook. After evading its teeth, I managed to de-hook it and decided to keep it as a future bait.
This happened again two more times before eventually something a lot more substantial tried to pull some line back on my Stradic. It turned out to be a very nice tailor, again not as big as I had hoped, but still at 45 cm, a very nice fish.

After landing a few more snook and a smaller tailor and releasing them it was time to head home and have some beautiful fresh tailor for supper.

It was a great little evening session and I would suggest that any of you young guys keen to catch a tailor might find Cott Groyne worth a try. The action all started just on dark, so plan to hedad down an hour before the sun hits the water.

All the best, Colin Hay

Developing new Xzoga PE8-10 POPPING Rod. Feedback & Comments

Hi all. Xzoga and I are working on a PE8-10 Popping rod specially designed for Australian conditions. I know there are many Japanese types and brands already out there from Carpenter to Zenaq for GT's & Tuna's. If any of you have any comments on what properties you would like to have in your ideal popping rod weather it's length, action, cast weight ect do share. Information gathered will be taken into consideration, studied and tested while developing our new rod so who knows in the near future you could find a popping rod on the shelf with the properties that you have always been after.

Thanks in advance and looking foward to all your comments.

Behind Garden/Carnac Island

Hey guys, I'm thinking of taking a trip out the back of garden/carnac to five fathom or there abouts tomorrow and was wondering if there's much out there in terms of snapper/dhu's, if so how far out should I go and to what depths?

Cheers,

Stevo.
