Minister reconsiders ban on power winches for recreational rock lobster sector
Submitted by Colin Hay on Thu, 2008-11-06 14:49Fisheries Minister Norman Moore has reconsidered an earlier plan to ban the use of power winches to lift rock lobster pots on boats used by recreational fishers for the coming 2008-09 season.
Mr Moore said the feedback he had received, after announcing changes last week to regulations governing recreational rock lobster fishing, indicated the power winch proposal needed further consideration and, as a consequence, would not be implemented this season.
“I have referred this particular issue to the Integrated Fisheries Allocation Advisory Committee to examine whether the use of winches on recreational boats causes conflict between the commercial and recreational rock lobster sectors in offshore waters and to make recommendations to me on their use,” he said.
“There are some serious considerations about the use of power winches by elderly or disabled people who participate in recreational lobster fishing which need further consideration.
“There are also matters related to policing and control of this issue.”
In addition to reconsidering the power winch proposal, the Minister said the Department of Fisheries chief executive officer had decided to waive the application fee for temporary transfer of commercial rock lobster units for the 2008-09 season.
This decision was made to provide some relief for commercial rock lobster fishers who had made economic decisions based on the situation prior to the Minister’s recent announcement of changes to regulations governing the industry.

CSIRO
Submitted by Bluetonic on Thu, 2008-11-06 13:02Was wondering how many of you use the site I have attached? It's the CSIRO ocean currents site and ever since Mark from Got One in Bunbury gave it to me I have found I'm lost without it.
I often fish for Pinkies in the bay and have found by using this site to pin point cooler water, my success has increased.
Last year we were also catching plenty of nice Bluefin Tuna to 10kg in the bay whilst setting berley trails for Snapper yet this year no such success. By using this CSIRO site we were able to compare last years temps with this years and note the water was by far warmer in the bay this year and the colder water was a lot further offshore, thus no doubt the Tuna were sitting out wide as well. I also focused on the cold water spots (small pockets here and there in the bay) to maximise my Snapper catches.

Tagging Dhuies
Submitted by uncle on Thu, 2008-11-06 11:50Several years ago ANSA and the West Coast Sportfishing Club were involved in a tagging program, mainly Dhuies and Pinkies plus other species.
I alone had 16 dhuies recapured after I had caught tagged and released them.
These were mainly around rotto in water up to 40 metres deep. Most of them were undersized when tagged and size when recaptured.they were all recaught in the same position they were originally caught. No release weight was used as they were brought up very slowly. The release weight was created during this program.
The pinkies were all recaught in a different area, one tagged at rotto was recaught up near Mindarie.

The high cost of braid - Please explain
Submitted by Colin Hay on Thu, 2008-11-06 08:41I am hoping that someone could explain to me why braid costs so much?
There are some braids out there that you pay more for than a pretty decent reel or rod.
I would expect that reel or rod to last me a lifetime. I wouldn’t say the same for the braid.
I am sure that even the highest class of braid is produced by a mechanised system, so why such a high cost compared to the nylon lines.
I am not trying to start a revolution here, but I was just wondering what the justification is for appears to be a very high markup.

Swell on Sunday
Submitted by carnarvonite on Wed, 2008-11-05 18:37Heard a rumour that some people are praying for a 6 metre swell peaking around 0700 in the morning and for the next 4 Sundays after that.
Was from something called the A P S [abalone protection society],they have notified the Surf lifesavers and all the news stations so they can get action shots of the "needy and the greedy" trying to catch an ab or 2
If the pics in the paper were any indication it should go off a treat.I can't wait!!!! LOL

Just curious
Submitted by 7739ian on Wed, 2008-11-05 05:53Why the Department of Water has a big Ali boat - a Wide beam Mackerel around 5.5m. I realise they have to chug around dams and up rivers but this seems a bit flash on my taxes. The interesting thing was as we followed it down Bussell Highway was the top of the woozer fish finder mounted in front of the skippers seat - for checking that perch aren't peeing in our dams?

Jurien Bay Fishing
Submitted by collie on Tue, 2008-11-04 09:45Hey guys im heading to Jurien Bay in mid december. I have an 18.5 foot boat and some decent gear to go bottom bouncing, trolling, jigging or whatever. Can any one please give me some info of what species i would be best off targeting. Also where abouts (how far offshore??) would i need to go. I have done alot of fishing before but not so much targeting bigger species (snapper, dhuies etc) as i have only had my boat for 6 months. Any advice on rigs, locations would be really appreciated.
Thanks
Mark.

steelhead fishing-COLD!
Submitted by steelhead on Tue, 2008-11-04 05:51Hey all,
Thanks for all the info about Karratha fishing. I figure you bunch are spoiled over there in WA-warm weather and sunshine!! Here, on the West Coast of Canada, our winter fishing can get pretty cold...we chase steelhead trout (sea-run rainbows) from Januray to April. The one in the pic is a 6 kg fish my wife caught this year...they love bubble-gum pink plastic worms!!!

Windy in Karratha??
Submitted by steelhead on Mon, 2008-11-03 05:50Hello All!!
I am new to this site, but it appears that there are a lot of folks here who have fished/lived in Karratha. My wife and I are avid fishos-we do a lot of saltwater fly fishing, trout and salmon fishing. We live in Canada, on the West coast. I am looking at a job in Karratha, planning on moving there next year sometime. Just wondering what the fishing weather is like out there. Does the wind pose a lot of problems there as far as getting out fishing? Are there places around Karratha that are generally sheltered from the wind so that one can get out and fish even if it is windy?
Many thanks for any info on this.
The picture I am attaching is that of a spring (chinook) salmon I caught this summer in the Fraser River-it was 26 pounds, about 12 kg. It was quite fresh out of the ocean still, and silver in color. Had to run about 1/2 mile down the beach to land it-they usually run really hard once hooked.

Table Shot
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Sun, 2008-11-02 17:46Well got out on the water for the first time 5 weeks . We are not sure who was more dryer us or the boat but both needed a salt water fix really baddly . Even tho the northerly was blowing it was not to bad a day out there . on the water by 6 am out of rocko as it was our clubs fishing comp day our son nathan went out with a friend as decky so it was two comps in one our boat aginest theirs ha ha we won (lol)as well as rockingham off shore .
The day started slowly with only 5 whiting on board by 10am tried a few spots we were given but nothing so out to the 90s and to our old faithfull spots we went. which produced a nice size squid , a nice size blackasse , small dhufish and a couple of nice size pinkys along with the never fail Queenes .
Nathan has alway wanted to catch a sambo so Nigle took him to this spot he has and sure enough Nathan got one coming in at just under 8 kg took him about 10 mins to get it aboard but with sore arms and determination and a great big smile on it came in his PB sambo . Got the action on a phone video so if i can i will post it later. He also caught a nice size kg
