Peaceful Bay Info
Submitted by jarrid on Tue, 2012-09-11 16:59Hi,
I am heading down to Peaceful Bay at the end of September for a few days and was chasing a bit of info. I've already done a search and read a lot of good stuff but was chasing a few more specifics. Have a Prado and I will be dragging down a 4.2m tinnie with a 40hp on it (will only go ocean bound if the weather is at a decent standard). Most of the info i found was in the deep or salmon related (not sure if they are around at this time).
- What is likely to be in the nearby inlet? Have heard KG's, flatties etc.
- Is there a ramp or is it a beach launch for the inlet? Is there easy access?
- What sort of depth are you loking at in the inlet?
- Is it still beach launch for the ocean?
- Anything worth chasing from land assuming weather doesn't cooperate?
Cheers in advance.
Jarrid

Australia to ban giant fishing trawler
Submitted by pelagicyachts on Tue, 2012-09-11 12:53news just out on Reuters - good news eh!
12:43 11Sep12 RTRS-Australia to ban giant fishing trawler
SYDNEY, Sept 11 (Reuters) - Australia plans to block a controversial "super trawler" from fishing in its waters for two years in a victory for environmental activists worried about the impact on fish stocks and other marine life.
Australian Environment Minister Tony Burke will introduce legislation on Tuesday to give him the power to ban the vessel from fishing until more scientific research is carried out.
Burke said there was too much uncertainty surrounding the environmental impact of the 142 metre (466 foot) trawler, reportedly the world's second-largest fishing vessel.
"There has never been a fishing vessel of this capacity in Australia before and the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act needs to be updated so that it can deal with it," Burke said.
Seafish Tasmania brought the FV Margiris to Australian shores last month in a joint-venture with the Dutch owners. It was awarded a 18,000 tonne quota to fish for jack mackerel and red bait fish off the coast of Australia under strict conditions. Its name was changed to the Abel Tasman and registered in Australia.
"Changing laws in response to emotive campaigning and "trial by media" undermines the credibility of Australian fisheries management, creates uncertainty and insecurity for fishermen and deters investment that is needed to support regional jobs," Seafish Tasmania and the Commonwealth Fisheries Association said in an open letter to lawmakers published on Tuesday.
Greenpeace, which had attempted to stop the ship docking when it arrived in South Australia, hailed the decision as a "sensible response to the threat of the Abel Tasman".

marlin weight....?
Submitted by Quobbarockhopper on Tue, 2012-09-11 11:57Was out off the islands up here this weekend and landed a nice black (am assuming it was a black- pec fin didnt fold back, shortish bill etc...). Did the right thing and resisted the urge to pull him out of the water for a trophy pic and didnt get a good measure length wise... but what do you guys think it would have weighed from the pics I did get...?
Was a good session all up-only pulled pushers for about 3 hours inbetween bottom bounching and raised three of them (pretty rare for around here I think), all of them had a go at least one of the spread but only one found the hooks... but that was still enough to put a smile on my face.
anyway, and guesses at the weigh would be much appreciated
Cheers

New Braid Suggestions
Submitted by Leemo on Tue, 2012-09-11 10:34G'day guys. Looking around for a new range of braid to try out, peferably ranging from 6lb to 14lb. Hopefully around the 60 dollar retail mark. I've looked into Unitika and the likes, but are a little pricey. I'm really looking for something that you don't usually find in your average BCF or bluewater.
Any suggestions?
Cheers, Leemo.

What *REEL* do you use - off shore & river
Submitted by Mainey on Mon, 2012-09-10 19:09Just about to get a new reel for some deep water use, and would like same reel to be used in river or estury use too ( if realistic )
The reel will be used from a boat
Not after Sailfish, Marlin, huge Sharks or any record breaking pelagics
Just seeking a quality made, saltwater proof reel, suitable for boat use that won't break the bank either
I have a Finn-Nor 'Off shore' level wind that I love, but I want something just a bit smaller as a second choice reel

Fish finder plotter and transducer
Submitted by Dave.r on Mon, 2012-09-10 16:17Hi All,
Im getting a 6m Alu boat built Scorpion from out Fremantle way, anyway Im wanting to work out what people think I should use Fish finder and plotter wise? I am planning on a seperate plotter from the FF/sounder to give myself a decent view of whats below. There are also a few options as far as the tranducer goes and some FF have what they claim is a system that offers even clearer view of whats below - for another $650 or so.
I will do a little fishing in about 20 - 30 meters going for Whitting close in at Lancelin but more out the back of Rotto and out back of Lancelin at around 60 m. I would appreciate peoples opinions on what they would choose allowing around 3k for the FF. If they can be purchased overseas/online as USA seems to have cheaper - well everything! and I am not in to much of a rush. ALso the technology e.g under hull, through hull, transome mount etc.
One other thing to consider at this stage is the plotter - I friend of mine mentioned a trolling motor he uses that can hold a point or follow structure which is something I may get at some stage so do I need to allow for this with a plotter I buy so it can control the trolling motor? Or maybe these electric motors actually come with their own plotter.
Thanks to anyone who comments and Im open for all suggestions
cheers
Dave

Whale Shark - Osaka Aquarium
Submitted by Fozz on Mon, 2012-09-10 14:36I'm off to Japan on Friday, flying into Osaka and will have some spare time on Sunday, so planning to visit Osaka Aquarium (one of the world's largest). Looking on their website, they have a whale shark in their largest tank. Not sure how I'll feel seeing a whale shark in captivity after seeing them in the wild of Exxy. I put them up there with dolphins, whales etc and belong in the ocean with room to move. Any thoughts on this or anyone been there themselves?

Fishing today. 9/9/12
Submitted by Justo82 on Sun, 2012-09-09 21:03Last minute head rush to go fishing today. Packed the boat and out by 1pm. Found. Spot 5 mins south of hillaries anchored up and burleyed.
Fish in seconds. Heaps butterfish and wrasse. But a few surprises too.
We were using whiting gear hoping for exactly that. A feed of whiting. But this is where we got surprised.
2 very nice mid 50's KGs. Then some juvie snapper (returned), then a spangled emperor!!! Wtf? Are these things common in Perth metro? It was undersized and went back, but a really odd catch. Then the missus had something grab the line and run like mad. I initially called ray, then saw shark!!! We boated a gummy over a meter on 6lb braid! Was stoked. A first on my boat as well.
By this stage we called it a day happy with out massive feed. Gummy all filleted and in freezer bags, the kg is currently being digested.
Great afternoon session. Can't wait to try again.

Irresponsible boat owner
Submitted by Dirt on Sun, 2012-09-09 18:43Went out in the sound with my mate Decrais last night in his boat for a snapper fish ( report to follow ) . I could not believe the amount of boats out there driving around and anchored up with absalutely no lights. These people need to grow a brain and consider other fishermen as they might not be the only people that get injured when another boat collides with them. I think they give boat licenses out way too easy. The fisheries would of had a field day out there last night

I netted this strange fish at my mates house on the Mandurah Canals last night. After a quick picture we released it but its got me stumped as toi what it is. I think it is some sort of a flounder or sole. Anyone have a clue to what it is? It was about 30cm long.

ammo jetty what a dump for irresponcible fisher people
Submitted by joe amato on Sun, 2012-09-09 11:25went fishing at the ammo jetty this morning with a mate this morning for scalies ,and found the jetty covered in discarded half fishbait with hooks still in big baits which would of been hazzordous to the local pelicans, seagulls and the general public by some inconsiderate fisher people who couldnt care less. i went around collecting the hooks by removing them from the big shark rigs, collected a heap of discarded fishing line and placed all these in the bin thinking to myself what a bunch of fuktards
whoever done this,no wonder the conservation groups want fishing stopped because of the minority of idiots outthere, after this i proceded to catch the scalies, took enough for myself and my mate,we caught enough still leaving them on the bite.........................

tonights pinks!!
Submitted by fisho-ron on Sat, 2012-09-08 22:49with a late call by troy and his mate gibbo to go for a night fish, we packed up the boat and headed to the freo ramp.
in the water by 2.30pm,what a perfect afternoon!!
nice and warm with flat seas as we headed out form the harbour to our spot we did ok at a few months ago on a night fish.
this time round it was very quiet with not alot of fish caught, but the ones that we did get were good quality.
my pinky was the first boated on a very slow arvo, it come in at 65cm, i was happy.....

a bit later on gibbo lands his new pb pinky at 72cm, on his new out fit as well, so he is happy too!

me and gibbo are giving troy a bit of shit as all his is getting is ells, sharks and bloody scorpion fish, then typical of the jaggy prick his floater goes off big time.
a short battle and we get this nice 90cm pinky into the net, troys new pb.

not alot after that besides a few port jacksons and some more scorpion fish, so we called it a night and headed in on flat classy water.
cheers

LB NOR Shore Report
Submitted by UncutTriggerInWA on Fri, 2012-09-07 15:13Seeing as I spent some time and fuel cruising the beaches today (nothing better to do that can't be done on another day) I thought I would give a bit of a heads up for those looking at heading out.
I've pretty much checked the coast from Jindalee to Loonies. Conditions today are perfect. There are still some areas that have lots of weed but there are also plenty of fishable areas. Swell is still up a bit and the tide is quite high in the middle of the night. Looking at the weather for the weekend I can't see why you guys shouldn't get out and have a crack (unless you are glued to the TV).
