I was going to send this an a PM to Whitety, but thought a few other FW punters who have fished Jurien could also be interested or tell me that I'm dreaming.

I was watching Shimano tv and came across this movie http://tv.shimano.co.jp/movie/tv/salt_dreamer_002/

It shows a fishing pro in Japan casting big and small top water minnows into schools of 30kg+ tuna. Then I got thinking that I've seen heaps of birds flying around tuna schools when I've been out with Whitey.

My question is, do you even get 10-30kg tuna off Jurien?  If so, in large enough numbers to chase them around and be able to make a fun day out of it?  Or are our tuna species too small?

I know you can troll around for macks and tuna, but I was thinking more of a 'find a school and cast lures on spinning gear' style of charter.

If there is anyone that is heading out from Mandurah tomorrow that wants a deckie I'm keen. will pay for fuel/bait whatever.

hey everyone i am currently helping a friend with the his phd, he is studying chimeras from new zeland, eagle rays and gummy sharks, i am basically just helping him catch the fish for it, he already has the chimeras he needs and now he just needs to some eagle rays and gummy sharks, preferabbly small ones he can keep live or just any for general study, we have a 4wd a big live well tank and any gear we need, so i was just wondering were are the best spots for everything that are about a day trip away? i ussauyl get all my eagles of the beaches or rotto and gummys of city beach is there any other places that are a bit more reliable though? and also any good areas for little ones? i will be mainly free diving if in the day to catch live samples if i can, ( another phd student coming and he is doing shovel noses and banjo sharks) so yeah any tips on areas?

Not too sure how important it is when fishing out in the deeper water 30m plus. I use this site and get an email whenever it is good or great fishing times with minor and major times

 Going on from Tailor Marc's discussion I thought I would post a picture of something I use to touch up my knives on a regular basis. The local butcher at Currumbine put me on to them and in fact sold me this one. It's a great device in that by lowering the lever above the sharpening blades at the top the device attaches firmly to a bench top and then releases just as easily. As I have said in Marc's post I use a butcher's boning knife of high quality steel. A couple of swipes occasionally and a good rub with a steel keep it in prime condition. I guess the secret is to keep it in a sheath and not do silly things like cutting on rocks or a sandy cutting board.

Some people may recognise this guy? Its Gman from 360tuna, usually pictured with blingy jigging gear, but not this time. Laughs, even his hair is straight for the pic.

Anyway the fish is a PEI Giant Bluefin around the 1000lb mark. The angler caught it on 80lb standup gear, probably on a herring.

Just a word of warning, I have a shimano reel with a seized drag bearing (big Baitrunner) sent it away and got it back within a week which is a good turnaround time.  Problem is that even though it has a 10 year warranty and the reel is 9 months old a seized bearing is not covered.  The guy in sydney who I rang was pretty rude with no customer service skills and said if I use it on the beach these things happen....(what are they made for)  I explained to him I have taken good care of this reel and unlike others it has never been dunked in saltwater and washed down with fresh water and a bit of inox like all my reels after use.  This reel will be for sale shortly with a replaced bearing $60 and shimano service.  I will never buy a shimano reel again and probably not any of their other products as I have a pretty bad taste in my mouth from the pathetic attitude I received from the Shimano rep.  lucky most of my reels are daiwa and penn

I am wanting to try out some Soft Plastics from the beach for Tailor, herring, Salmon etc. Before I go out and spend a fortune on jigheads, can anyone share their experiences of this kind of fishing???

I am looking at using 4 to 5 inch plastics (berkley, atomic etc). What weight jighead would you reccomend from the beach? I guess it needs to be large enough to get casting distance (for fish like tailor) but not so heavy that it destroys the action of the plastic.

Is half oz heavy enough? Too heavy?

Any advice from you experience would be great. Thanks

I'm looking Into getting a new heavy beach outfit, tossing up between a daiwa sensor surf 13ft in the 20-40 lb version or a lemax red sword or blue mountain 14ft in the 20-60 lb also matching it up with a shimano saragosa 18000 just wanted to know if any one had used these rods especially the lemax since I haven't seen very many reviews on them and I'm a bit worried the sensor surf wont be able to handle casting out big baits seeing as it's only rated 3-6 oz and the lemaxs are 2-10 oz . If anyone could helpme out would be awesome cheers

Hey guys, thinking about heading back to Broome in late March early April next year.. Just wondering what the situation is with the fishing and the weather at that time of year. I know its still the tail end of the wet season so it might be abit of a gamble but its really the only window I can get up there.

What are the pelagics like that time of year?

 Thinking of taking the boat out tomorrow... Can't decide whether to have a crack at some bream in the serpentine/murray or head out into the sound and chase some squid... 

Any suggestions??

Anyone with any experience on the Calstar 700mh?

I'm planing on building a heavy spin rod for use with 40 - 50 ib braid and am a bit worried the 700h will be a bit of an overkill, not planing on chucking super sized poppers all the time. I can't seem to find much talk of the mh around the web though.

Maybe another question would be what size lures would people feel comfortable going down to with the 700h?

Any thoughts apprieciated.
