North of River vs South of River -2008- Fishwrecked Fishing Competition

The EXTRAVAGANZA that is the FISHWRECKED NOR vs SOR fishing comp is on again.

We have currently pencilled in the following dates for the 2 legs of the comp: Mindarie - 26th April & Point Peron 10th May.

There is a $10 entry fee per angler to help boost the prize pool. All fees will be donated back into the competition and given out as prizes.

We have already had some of the great sponsors from last years event confirm they want to be involved again but if you know of anyone else who would be interested in sponsoring the comp or donated prizes please let Adam, Andy Mac or Tim know.

This Competition is for FUN!! We as organisers can't be held accountable for the weather and will postpone the events if we believe it is not safe for participants. The final decision to fish the comp on any given day is the responsibility of each individual skipper and not the organizers of the comp, so bottom line is its your call whether you fish or not and its our call whether there will be a comp on or not.

Here is a copy of the first sign up thread, which is now designated for banter between the teams:

shave for leukaemia

Not about fishing but worthy of a mention

Hi all just a quick note to say how proud I am of my 16 year old daughter Amy , as she has stepped up to shave her head for the leukaemia foundation . She is very passonate about this cause as her uncle died 2 years ago from this disese. She is only one of two girls in the school , who have volunteered for this cause and has raised $750 so far .

Good on ya Amy May love you lots ...

Tomorrow could be good

I have been studying my almanac, checking out my tide book and rubbing my dog's tummy and all the signs suggest tomorrow (Thursday) could be really good for fishing. Peak almanac times coincide fairly well with major tide movements. Mid morning and later at night appear to be the best times.
Sunday is also highly rated.
Hope you all catch some great fish over the long weekend.
All the best, Colin Hay

Very Very bad fishing prank!

Woah ! I would kill them all!

Watch the lot

Harvey Dam

Heading down to harvey dam next weekend, fishing for Redfin and hopefully a trout.

Anyone recommend areas to fish? we were thinking of fishing feeder streams and looking for pools further up in the river aswell.

Lancelin this weekend

I am going to be heading to Lancelin this weekend and taking the tinnie. (4.5m 40hp)

Any tips for fishing this area as I havent been up there before?

what species are around to target?
How deep would I have to go to get them?

Cheers

This was sent to me from a mate in Karratha - Pretty Funny!!

The day started like many others in the Pilbara however there was a tingle of expectation in the air.  The intrepid anglers left the safety of Cossack harbour at 4am for the hour and a half journey to the feted Jones River.  In pitch blackness they used the stars, their instincts and Navman GPS to negotiate their way to the creek mouth.  Finding the channel they made their way to a likely looking bank to throw the nets for live bait.

On arrival with the sun just making its way over the horizon Nicko jumped off the boat with net in hand and sighted a likely looking school of pink shrimp getting busted up by an aggressive group of predators.  A few throws of the net later the boys had a bucketful of live bait, mullets being the preferred choice of barra.  With that done they moved to the 'strike zone', setting up the boat and rigs and waiting for the tide to turn.

The action started shortly after - Ant being the first to strike with a huge fish breaking the surface after taking his livie.  However the monster from the deep cunningly used its razor sharp fins to bust off the 80pd mono leader.  Nick looked on enviously - would today prove to be another twig in the mounting nest of disappointment that was his barra quest?

A knowing smile caressed his face though, a nod of acknowledgment was visible under the shade of his hat as he remembered the pledge he had made to the barra gods.  The first barra that he managed to tame would be returned to the creek, to live to fight another day.  At that moment Nick and the barra were one, he knew his time had come.

Settling down under the shade of his hat he sensed the fish before it made its presence known, a gentle tug at the rod tip the first evidence of interest in his mullet.  The reel stared to tick as the monster below nervously approached its prey.  As the tension built the reel started to scream as the behemoth from the depths of the creek made its move.  Instantly alert Nick picked up the rod as the fish made its first blistering run, still unaware it was about to engage in an almighty battle with its most dangerous adversary yet.  As Nicko engaged the spool arm the hook stuck, in response the previously unseen predator instantly leapt from the water as if to cast off its pursuer.  The cry came up from the boat in unison - BARRA!

Nick, a bundle of nervous energy used all his guile to tame the beast as it proceeded on a series of blistering runs.  The battle ensued with no quarter asked or given by either opponent.  Finally, the defeated warrior was close enough to the boat for the first look at its golden flank, its scales a livery of colour, unsurpassed in the aquatic world.  As the defeated colossus was bought into the boat nick bowed his head and uttered a silent acknowledgment to the barra gods that had made this moment possible.

As the prey and its hunter looked each other in the eye for the first time, time itself seemed to slow down, both realised they had made a connection that would change both of them forever.  As the golden wonder was returned to the water it turned briefly, acknowledging the moment and then disappeared with a flash of its golden tail.

This was surely a moment for the ages, Nick was not sure the sun had ever shone brighter, or the cries of the ocean birds ever been so distinctive.

Nick was now the BARRA master.

has anyone had a crack at bonitos already at the mole?

fishing with brad 93

hey guys just to let you no how we went yesterday

well we headed out to hillarys at about 2.00pm.  Then we went out to the light house tryed to get some small fish, too windy and if there was a fish it was just blowiess.  We moved up to the drain on the wall, the guy next to us was getting small sharks (only 50-60cm) so i thought i would hit the big gear, got it out there, then i got some wiried touchers.  Just thinking if you could help me, what they mite be, they were like pressure and then a hit but I kept missing them.  I will try again next weekend anyway.

thanks

dane

Sunday Fish

Headed out for the first time in months. Managed to get out wide first up and slowly worked our way back in.

As will all new deckies the rule is your first fish goes back, nomatter what it is. Poor Stu, his first drop landed this beauty.

We picked up a few baldies and moved on to another spot, where Rory nailed another baldie.

The day was pretty slow, but apart from a this little Dhuie and one just size , there wasn't much biting.

Was good to get the boat wet and come home with a feed. The weather was sensational out there today.

Abalone thieves given heavy fines!

Abalone thieves given heavy fines
Date: March 2008

Three people received fines between $1,150
and $1,540 in Joondalup Court this week, after pleading guilty to
illegal fishing during the 2007 West Coast Zone abalone season.

35-year-old
Lei ZHANG of East Perth was found to be in possession of 51 abalone (31
above the limit), when he was questioned by a Fisheries and Marine
Officer on the last day of the season. On Wednesday (12 March 2008) a
magistrate fined him $1,540.

34-year-old Masaaki HORIKOSHI of
Perth had 29 abalone more than the daily bag limit of 20, when his
catch bag was inspected on 2 December last year – which led to a $1,480
fine this week.

Also, on Wednesday, 45-year-old Gary Michael
GAFFNEY of Joondalup was ordered to pay $1,150 for being in possession
of 18 abalone more than the limit on the second Sunday of the 2007
season.

North Metro Compliance Manager Todd A’Vard said, in
order to manage the fishery in a sustainable way, the West Coast Zone
abalone season was only open to recreational fishers for one hour each
Sunday morning between 4 November and 9 December last year, but a small
number of fishers wrongly took more abalone than they should have.

“Those
who break the abalone bag or possession limits are stealing from a
limited community resource and the Department of Fisheries is always
well prepared for the season and ready to prosecute any law-breakers,”
Mr A’Vard said.

This week’s cases follow five other recent court
appearances for offenders prosecuted over fisheries crime during the
2007 abalone season in the metropolitan area.

Last Friday, in a
Perth court, 43-year-old Nowardy HANDY of Cannington was fined $1,580,
for having 24 abalone in excess of the possession limit (of 20) when
her catch bag was inspected by a Fisheries and Marine Officer at North
Beach on Sunday 9 December.

36-year-old Paul John BALLARDIN from
North Beach was last month fined $2,800 in a Perth court for taking 23
abalone too many (including five that were undersize), when his catch
was checked at Mettam’s Pool beach on Sunday 25 November.

On
the opening day of the 2007 abalone season (4 November) 49-year-old Su
Van NGUYEN of Westminster was found with 33 abalone above the bag limit
when he was stopped at Ocean Reef. He was last month fined $1,600 in
Joondalup.

In the same court, 63-year-old Tomislav MARKOVIC of
Duncraig was ordered to pay $1,330 for taking 24 abalone too many, when
questioned at Ocean Reef on 2 December and 48-year-old Tan Cong DANG of
Hocking was fined $1,210 for collecting double the bag limit, when he
had his catch inspected on a Mindarie beach on 11 November 2007.

It's funny how bag limits mean nothing to these people and they're happy to take the risk, a criminal record sticks for life but Wink

Evinrude E-Tech against 4 Strokes

Hi Guys

Thinking of getting a boat around 6 metre and was wondering if anyone has a evinrude e-tech 2 stroke motor and any info on them. Some people tell me they are more economical than a 4 stroke and a much better engine and some people tell me that they are rubbish and that 4 strokes are better. If anyone has some valuable info to fill me in on that would be great.

Thanks
