Once in a Blue? Marlin
Submitted by duges66 on Sat, 2015-03-28 14:33After getting the co-ords from some friendly folk here on FW, Chris Raff another mate Al & I headed out yesterday for what was our 1st ever trip to the FADs.
Al & I work together and had recently been offshore north of Exmouth after cyclone Olwyn which cancelled the Gamex comp. It was while we were on the riser reconnecting an FPSO that we got talking & Al recounted his glory days of fishing out of Karratha. Most of the discussion was around pelagics as we watched those that had travelled for Gamex still getting amongst it.
Al still has all the gear required for this type of fishing though hadn’t used it for years so I suggested when we get back to Perth we should head out and wet aline.
We departed 7am from Woodies to what was looking like a top day as the winds and swell were low.
We headed for the closest (Undersea Club WA #2) of the fads to find it missing but could see #1 in the distance so started trolling about. The lack of bait fish was probably due to how recent these FADs were deployed.
So we trolled our way out to the deeper FADs without any luck and no bird activity to generate any excitement.
On arrival at the next FAD we were greeted with dollies leaping out of the water and it didn’t take us long to get a few in the boat. The school would follow the caught dolly to the boat so we'd throw a lure amongst them but they were having none of that so around we’d go again etc… we were taking it in turns and decided on keeping 2 each so were disappointed when they seemed to go off the boil with 5 boated leaving Chris with only 1 boated dolly. We decided to pull the gear and high tail it to another FAD, it didn’t take Chris long till he was reeling in his Dolly but alas on retrieving it over the gunnel it got off and around we’d go again. We could see the dollies and they were leaping about chasing a feed but didn’t want to take the lures.
Given it was 2 hrs run home we decided to head for shallower waters for a bottom bounce. Al mention as I was pulling in the teasers something about how it would be nice to "catch a marlin” a minute later as I was retrieving the lure on the Tiagra 16 with 10kg breaking strain mono when that beautiful ratchet sound started humming, given Chris was up next I handed him the rod and he started winding. Then it happened a marlin started dancing on the water about 40m from the boat.
You can imagine the excitement on the boat. Given it was on 10kg BS line and Al’s experience he took the rod and the adventure began.
The battle to get it alongside for some pics before releasing took 2 hrs 40, with it mostly heading deep and about 5 k’s from our starting point. It came up a few times but only danced on the surface once after the initial couple of dances on hook up. Each time we’d get it near the boat it would start stripping line and head deep. The sounder showed us to be in 250mtrs
Once alongside Al called it for a Blue Marlin. We took turns getting a pic and I had the pleasure of swimming it alongside for a minute or 2 before bidding it farewell & letting it go on it’s way.
Last pic is Al with his Marlin.
A truly awesome day.

Switching trebles to singles on lures?
Submitted by Notorious on Sat, 2015-03-28 10:19Hi all
Fella at the tackle shop tells me its preferable to switch treble hooks to single hooks on lures, apparently better chances of hook ups?
1 - do most of ya'll do this?
2 - if so, what type/size hook would I change my Halco 190DD's to?

went out with Kyle {tot] on here
Submitted by uncle on Fri, 2015-03-27 15:07first drop was out behind the 3 mile, nice baldy for Kyle, caught a few undersize dhuies and b/arse, left for n/end rotto, lousy 22.5 water temp, tried a few drifts for zero, put the pick down and burlied up,dead calm, waited for a bit, under size pinky and a sambo on the other rod, Kyle got a couple of nice skips,we had a few deep water releases then caught a 70 cm pinkie, bugger wind changed and stuffed up the burly stream so headed home with the sea breeze, great run home never touched the throttle all the way home, was a good day

Insurance
Submitted by Shane O on Thu, 2015-03-26 21:59We made the move to a smsf fund have had it for Al out a year, I kept a small amount in my other fund to cover
life insurance, income protection etc.
but that runs out after a year of no contributions, so we are in the market for insurance and want to close the industry fund and top up my own fund for the property being built.
Does anyone recommend any companies for this type of insurance, any pros and cons?

Fishing crew
Submitted by Burra on Thu, 2015-03-26 15:36Hi guys, been in Perth for a few years now and have finally bought myself a boat! On occasions I am looking for another keen fisho to join me as I am a little apprehensive taking it out solo. I'm in my mid 20s and have done a lot of boating/fishing off shore. So I was wondering if there is anyone out there in the same situation that would be keen to come out in my tub and find some fish or even I'd be happy to fill a spot in you boat if that is preferred. Ocean Reef is my local ramp but I am happy to travel if needed?
Cheers,

Ocean Reef Marina Saturday Morning
Submitted by Belly Fish on Thu, 2015-03-26 10:36Just a heads up that the Australian Anglers Association is holding the State Boat Fishing Championships out of Ocean Reef Marina this Saturday 28th March.
There are 170 members of affiliated clubs registered, fishing out of 70 boats, so will be a little busier than normal.
Start time is 6:30am, so if you are not competing but want to launch from Ocean Reef, I'd recommend a 5am start or leave it until after 6:30am. You obviously can launch whenever you want, but it will be a bit more congested.
If anyone is interested, the weigh-in will commence at around 4:30pm at the Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club. Public are most welcome.
Note that the competition has been species based (only 1 of each) for a number of years, so this event is not about huge piles of fish....3 or 4 species would be average, with the Men's winner likely to have around 8 species.
More information can be found at http://www.aaawa.iinet.net.au/BoatingMain.html

Timing on Buying a Boat
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Wed, 2015-03-25 10:57Looking to upgrade the 3m dinghy within the next 18 months and looking for an idea on the best time to look to pull the trigger. I am aware that you get better prices if you look to buying a boat during the winter but I am also mindful that the mining downturn is gaining momentum and there will be a lot of guys who spent a lot on toys and will be looking to offload items like boats, jetskis etc to keep their heads above water.
Did anyone buy a boat around the time of the GFC when we had the last big downturn and would it be worth waiting until this one really hits in the hope that there will be a glut of boats on the market to choose from and being really brutal in pushing the price down?

FAD Locations off Rotto
Submitted by duges66 on Tue, 2015-03-24 23:22Chasing the Rotto/Perth FAD locations. Have trolled thru the web and found the 2 x recfish ones but from what I can gather there are 6 in total and it seems you have to become a member of PGFC to get them in readable format as the map on the website is not 100% legible (see pic attached). Also the map is entitled FAD Chart 11 08 01 which means the co-ords if readable could be from 2011???
Anyone shed any light on the co-ordinates and how they are fishing of late?
Yeh yeh for those that roll their eyes at the question I posted, I have used the search function and,
a) not seeing them on my gps
b) not found the co-ords using google - just lots of reference to PGFC (whom it appears want you to part with $25 for the map which hey I'm happy to do but can't see the map arriving before Friday which is when I'm intending to head out....
c) when I do find co-ords the post date is not that recent i.e usually 2012 (see below) etc.. perhaps they are in the same location but don't want to travel 50+k's to find they aren't
d) Have also found the 2011 co-ords which are diff to the 2012 co-ords - so that kind of debunks the they are always in the same location each yr posts/answers
e) 2012 locations
Club Marine 32° 03'.316 E 115° 19'.450 100m
Fremantle Sailing Club S 32° 05'.171 E 115° 11'.934 220m
Furuno S 31° 57'.50 E 115° 15'.82 140m
Hillarys Yacht Club S 31° 54'.665 E 115° 12'.911 170m
Perth Game Fishing Club S 32° 00'.122 E 115° 13'.578 190m
Yamaha Outboards S 32° 08'.793 E 115° 10'.434 180m
Thought I'd post the above points to save those that are inclined to criticize the trouble of doing so.
Considerate bastard aren't I?
