metro landbased
Submitted by barcelona125 on Wed, 2016-02-10 16:48hey guys
havnt been on the site for a while but i need some info from the perth guys. I am a keen fisho and love fishing but i am moving to perth in 2 weeks to start uni and having only lived in Busselton i only really know spots down around busso
obviously i will be bringing my fishing gear up with me to perth but i have had zero experience fishing in metro waters. I will only be landbased and i dont really want to be travelling long ways as i am going to be a poor uni student and wont be able to afford large fuel bills.
i will be staying on campus at curtin so spots near by would be ideal but i am sure i would manage a couple of trips north of the river every so often
i like all types of fishing but really enjoy my artificial lure casting, especially from rocks into surf and wash.
i understand that secret spots are secret but any general spots would be much appreciated
thanks heaps
Nathan

mandurah estuary popping
Submitted by Lowza on Tue, 2016-02-09 21:16Looking for some new spots to try in the Mandurah estuary for whiting on poppers. My usual spots of the serpentine river mouth flats and owen street (Novara)aren't producing the usual herring and tings.
Can anyone recommend other spots to go within the industry looking at going this weekend :) Any suggestions appreciated.

shark bay pink snapper rule clarification
Submitted by randall df223 on Tue, 2016-02-09 20:11I recently wrote to fisheries about the new 5kg possession limit in the new management zone in shark bay. My question related to fish caught outside the zone (in my case scenario - monkey mia) but being transported along shark bay road. Shark bay road is a boundary of the management zone. The response is below and i think also clarifies steep point catches and possession limits:
Baitcaster advice
Submitted by Ethan A on Tue, 2016-02-09 16:37Hi Guys
I have been looking at getting a baitcaster for a while now. As this is my first baitcaster l am looking for some advice on what baitcaster and rod l should be looking at.
I am willing to pay up to $150. l'm for looking a rod with a 4 to 10kg weight rating most of the baitcasters l have been looking at are mainly designed for casting lures l want something l can use for bait and lures it would mainly be getting used on herring, Trout, tailor, small mulloway and salmon. I have seen the combos at bcf are they any good for what l would be targeting.
Thanks in advance for the advice

Mandurah Crabing - Quick report and advise
Submitted by crasny1 on Tue, 2016-02-09 08:15Living in Bouvard and 500m away from the ramp its easy to go for a bash.
At the start heaps of small ones and the odd big. All in the deep (1.5m plus)
Recent deep trips have been pretty lean.
On one of the trips there was 5 boats all lined up to go in, when one of the Pro boats came up behind. I had a quick quite word to 2 boats in front and we decided to let her jump the line (eventually all but one gave way to the Pros -I mean its them working not having fun).
She thanked me and others heaps and gave some advise. They have appeared to have moved out of the deep into the shallows, and to try the drop off's on the edges.
So now the theory was tested last weekend (im always sus on Pro advise as why would you give away info to let every amateur block your fishing).
Headed a little further south than our usual tried and trusted spot, as it was swamped by others.
Ran 2 lines off five with Identical baits in all pots (im a scientist so have to control the experiment).
5 in deep water (1.5m) and 5 on the adjacent drop off in about 1m or less.
Result: 1 in 2 pulls in the deep and 9 in the first pull in the shallows from 5 nets.
Despite having 2 licences 10 is always our target if there is no hangers on, as it is all the family will eat (and all I will clean as NO ONE ELSE WILL). The pickup pull in the deep the second run had none, and we dumped another 5 in the shallow set.
So I think despite every other year they are in the shallows, and afterwards we cruised the shallows to check and there was plenty. A scooper around the same area also commented that he was selective and only keeping the "don't bother measuring" size one, and dumping some obvious size ones.
So just a little info, but as we all know things can change and with this hot spell maybe they will head back deep with the shallows warming up.

Finding new ground
Submitted by dakka on Tue, 2016-02-09 07:40Howdy all
I have sold my tinnie and have now bought a Frazer western craft 525.
As I only went out to the five fathom bank in warnbro sound in my old boat. I now want to go further out to the 30s and 40m area.
My question is is there structure around those depths I should be looking for and where is a good place to start in finding new ground as I have never been out in those depths fishing before. Any help would be most appreciated.

Sharking Advice
Submitted by keith Bruning on Mon, 2016-02-08 22:57Hi Peeps,
I have been getting into a fair bit of metro landbased shark fishing, well paddling and balooning baits out with only a couple of small strikes and no proper hookups.
Iam running 80 pound braid mainline, tied with a bimni twist and a clench knot to 140 pound mono leader joined to a swivel which is attached to a 300 pound wire trace. Where the bait is usually suspended
by a baloon tied to the swivell above the wire trace. (Any suggestions on this setup?)
Ive been really wanting to get onto a decent sized bronzie or tiger shark. Any tips on what baits go well with these sort of sharks?
Also what sort of berly slick do you guys normally get going? Just an oil slick? oil and bait slick? Is it possible(okay/ legal) to create a small chum slick?
Also what sort of weather wind and swell conditions should I be looking out for? (Usually I head out when ever the wind is blowing offshore, depending on the beach on rising tide)
Cheers guys

Deckie in Bunbury area looking to join a local crew
Submitted by Kingsley1970 on Mon, 2016-02-08 19:35
After moving from Mandurah and selling my boat a couple of years ago i'm keen to do some offshore fishing (actually any fishing would be good) in the Bunbury area.
I have owned my own boats, run my own crews, have a skippers ticket and own all my own fishing gear. I'm 45, WA born and bred, n/s, and of course happy to split costs / fuel.
The guys I work with now aren't into boats or fishing (no I don't understand either) and there are no local charter boats based in Bunbury, so rather than finding a new job thought I should put it out there - looking to make a few new friends in Bunbury to fish with on a regular basis.
Please shoot me a PM if you are looking for crew and if you might be interested in talking offline.
Every meessage will get a reply.
Cheers,
Peter

Seadek project in my Canyon Runner
Submitted by Muppet on Mon, 2016-02-08 09:26Hey guys, thought I would post some pics of my latest project with the boat.
i have replaced the carpet with Seadek flooring. Flow coated the deck and routered the flooring so it has a nice edge on it.
came up alright I think. Still have the helm area to do. Not cheap, but I've been hanging out to give it a go.
so far I can say that this stuff is really comfy underfoot. Lots of grip and doesn't get hot. AND no crap hiding under the carpet. I had a sample piece on the arse end of the boat for about 4 years. It held up well and was still goin when I ripped it off.
cheers

Hillarys Fishing Depth
Submitted by Hazzadazzlaa on Sun, 2016-02-07 19:54Howdy,
So i Have managed to get on some fish off three mile lately off hillarys but im starting to figure out that maybe they are just in close due to spawning?
Anyway my question without giving spots is what depth should i be looking at for fishing out of 3 mile?. I have been hitting 10m to approx 18m but i would like to know what depth would produce decent size Dhui and Snapper.
Once again thanks for your knowledge and advice. Again my boat is only small.

Hillarys Parking Permit
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Sun, 2016-02-07 18:30Anyone keen to go halves in a Hillarys parking permit? I've got two boats registered under my name but only one I'd ever use at Hillarys. If I can get two parking permits would someone be interested in contributing half the cost and receiving one of the permits?
Sick of these wankers expecting me to find $8 worth of coins.

Deckwash setup
Submitted by holth on Sat, 2016-02-06 19:56My mates picked up his new to him second hand barcrusher and hes enlisted me to do the fitup of his electrics and other items.
The boat is minus a deckwash and he wants one. what the boat does have is a auto pump connected to the pickup and feeding the live bait tank via a switch on the dash.
So instead of feeding the bait tank as he wont use it, is it possible to hook up a hose and use as a deckwash. Whats got me worried going this way is the pump constantly running when not being used if not switched off and being under pressure when the water isnt flowing causing the pump to burn out. normally a typical jabsco deckwash setup the pump only primes when the water is needed and can be left on for periods of time.
Has anyone got a deckwash set up like this or is my concern of burnout real.
Cheers Paul

Bait Gathering
Submitted by sandbar on Fri, 2016-02-05 21:30Went out this morning for a squid session. Getting ready for sunday morning. Tried the coathanger for a couple then headed north along GI. Found likely ground
and started catching squid. It wasnt till the wind changed about 12pm that they were on the bite. Before that had a heap of looks and they wouldnt touch any of the jigs I had out. They were more interested in starting a conversation with the jigs! Then got this absolute thumper of a squid, i thought here we go, this ones pulling line hard! Get it close to the boat and i got my PB on a squid jig. Except it wasnt a squid, its an occy. Rapt with that, headed off with a good bag of fresh bait. I might try pickleing half the occy. And feed the other half to a big fat DHUIE!

Big John's Jigs and MJ's Rigs
Submitted by Mick C on Fri, 2016-02-05 20:39Big John's Jigs and MJ's Rigs has got a nice “ring” to it. After careful consideration of quality, demand, and local WA businesses we’ll stock the items. John and Mark are great to work with and we have now started to put together the showroom display. It has been an enjoyable task, as I believe that what we are proposing will add value for fishermen to select from our future range. Images of the background interior displays are shown below, minus the selected products – the display will be laid out samples that show the detail, not shelves of products.

We are targeting our “opening” for later next week – we won’t be fully stocked but “time to get on with it”. Our web site is “down” for upgrade, and when we open it will be “live” and explain our full offering.
We really hope to provide what “seasoned” fishermen want, and the Jigs and Rigs are quality.
