Submitted by Scotte on Sat, 2016-02-27 15:25Hit the water early today.trolled for a few fruitless hours before heading out to drop an occy tenticle on a few spots.second drop, bang!although not huge it fought real well refusing to come off the bottom for 20 seconds. The 60lb braid eventually won. Was magic today ,perfect drift without sea anchor

Night fishing for Pinkies and Dhuies
Submitted by Poppy on Fri, 2016-02-26 19:59I've never been out for a night fish and have been trying to arrange to go out with Craig Warne tomorrow night. Anyway, it seems that he couldn't get enough interest to make it worth his while and he's heading up to the Abrolhos in a couple of weeks. Does anybody have any recommendations for other charters that take charters out at night? I'm not interested in sambo jigging. I would prefer to chase the aforementioned snapper etc. Any good suggestions will be appreciated.
Thanks
Baz

Surf/casting rod for Rotto
Submitted by bradz on Fri, 2016-02-26 13:38Afternoon everyone
I only do a small amount of shore fishing each year and that is mostly from the reefs at Rotto. Ive got a 9ft Gary Howard rod for the light stuff but am looking for a 20-30lb rod with a bit more length. In the past Ive used my 4m low mount with 30lb mono but really dont need the extra length.
Is there a reasonable quality 11 to 12ft rod which you could recommend for casting weights ranging from a baitcast mulies and up to about 4 ounces. Budget is around the $200 mark...give or take a bit. I fish mainly for tailor but hope to get the occasional YTK off Radar Reef.
Share your thoughts on low mount versus high mount for spinning reels as well.
If youve got something you are looking to sell which meets this criteria drop me a PM.
Cheers
Brad

Wind-ons (how to) Picture heavy
Submitted by psion on Fri, 2016-02-26 10:18I know its been done to death, but a few guys (newbees) have PMed me asking for instructions on how to make them. I though, (difficult for me), as I am going to write something I may as well make it a general post.
1st off, a couple of disclaimers:-
I am not laying claim to the method, it is a combination of ideas gleened over the years and "poached" from others who are far more skilled and knowledgable than me.
This is not necessarliy the best way to do it, it is just how I do it.
It is "anal"
Please feel free to take what you want from this, but I aint responsible for any lost fish as result.(Bwahaha)
KIT
It is handy, but not neccessary to have a selection of needles for threading line. A large sewing needle would be the bare minimum.

you don't really need the others, I have them because Im old and lazy.
You will also need:
Sandpaper (800)
Old 8-10lb braid (or similar thread)
Dacron
Line (or tennis gut)
Heat shrink tube
Superglue
Scissors
lighter
Kettle.
LINE PREP
Most line is shiny and coated. take the last 1m+ (the bit that is going into the Dacron) and lighty sand it to the end, just enought to rough it up slightly and remove the "gloss finish"

take the lighter and melt the tip to give you a nice round end.
I generally use about 3 metres of Dacron and tread 1.5m on to the line. like so

Once the line is in the dacron, (go to what ever depth you want) I whip finish the tip. Using the 8 lb braid wind the last 2-6 cms of the Dacron tightly onto the line, with the braid (dental floss works really well too). This is important as it forms the achor for your friction knot, the more line you have threaded into the dacron the stronger the knot.
Large whip finish

Smaller whip finish
Take the whip finish past the dacron and on to the line (5mm should do it)
to finish the knot add a bit of superglue to the tag end (where the thread meets the line, not too much, 1 drop will do it).
slide on your heat shrink and dip into the boiling kettle. (heads up, when you are finished empty the kettle, I forgot and the missus made coffee from the water. She threw the kettle away and bought a new one because she thought the kettle made the water foul. I now hold the heat shrink over the sink and pour the boiling water over it. (One day I'll tell her the truth).

heat shrink before water treatment.
Now for the other end.
thread the dacron through your needle, find the mid point, decide how big a loop you want, and then "stitch weave" it for 6-8 cms, thread the needle through the dacron for 30 cms, repeat the stitch weave and then thread the dacron through to the end.

The stitch weave?? (if thats what its called)

and then threaded through

finally, to ensure that this never comes undone, I find the end of the Dacron, (run your fingers down the dacron, you'll feel a bump) whip finish that (5mm) and add a touch of superglue. Again this helps in holding the friction knot together.
like so.
Yea I know i'm anal, I am not that good a fisherman so I like to make sure that my tackle won't fail me when I catch the bigun.
finish product
Heavy duty windon (150 lb - 6 metre) on a torium 50

Light windon (6m of 80lb) on a saltist 50
the catspaw knot works well.

COUPLE OF NOTES TO FINISH OFF
Tennis gut works really well for Sharks, it is a multi strand line, designed to handle abrasion.
You can also tie a steel windon for those of you who are really hard core. It is tied a little differently in that I use two Dacron braids and cover the whole leader, except for the last metre. this ensures a double protective "coating" between the steel trace and your eyes during the cast.
the trace on the right has the 1st Dacron line, the one on the left is complete.
that is it, hope it helps someone
cheers.

Drakesbrook Dam
Submitted by Nickh on Fri, 2016-02-26 09:03Hi All,
Took the kids out for a drive last weekend and ended up at Drakesbrook Dam which looks like a nice spot for the kids to play and fresh water fish according to the sign thats been erected :) So we are going to head down again this weekend and have a bbq and i will chuck in a line.
From what i can find on the internet, its stocked yearly with trout and has been infested by redfin perch as well so does anyone have any tips about bait/lures to use? From what i can find on the fisheries website it isnt closed to fishing although its also not on the open all year round list either. Any advice most appreciated as the kids are a bit sick of catching blow fish (as am i!!!)
Cheers,

Towing regs for biiiggg boats
Submitted by dazzmatazz on Thu, 2016-02-25 22:30I have searched for regs around towing bigger boats in WA. Some of what I found was old and possibly not applicable and most for boats under 3500kgs.
I am looking at getting a tri axle and properly breaked trailer made for a 28ft Bertram fly bridge. They are pretty wide at 3.2m and really heavy. I am yet to confirm this but 5200kgs fully loaded with water fuel and gear. I would tow her light but that's what I found out so far.
I would be making use of a relevant truck to tow it and generally it would only be a once or maybe twice a year thing.
Can someone please post the links or tag me in another thread or something showing the regs around towing such a boat. Or if you know 100% let me know what the go is. I want to find out if the trailer is worth it.

Shore Catch Second Hand Goods - Initial Data Uploaded
Submitted by Mick C on Thu, 2016-02-25 12:14I promise this is the last post I will write about second hand goods.
As per my previous post (http://www.fishwrecked.com/forum/shore-catch-update-last-doors-are-open), I advised that the initial upload of second hand goods to our web site would occur this week. This has now been done. There are certainly some nice items amongst the bunch and we thank all persons that have trusted us with their equipment.
As noted in the web site, we will post all equipment received at noon on Thursday each week. This will be a regular event and we encourage you to have a look at current stock after this time. All stock maintenance will occur in the weekly update where new items will be added and sold items removed. We will however regularly update the status of the items when sold so if you see a “sold out” notation next to the item then it has been purchased, with all information to be removed during the next Thursday update.
It has taken a lot of time and effort to develop this service. Our methodology is now complete and on our web site for all to see so the development task is over, although any suggestions are welcome. We really hope that now people see that we are conducting our business in a professional manner the stock range will continue to grow. If this happens then we do believe it may be a valued service to Members.
We will consign any goods as long as they are fishing and/or boating related and have a sale price generally in excess of $100 (negotiable). We will display the goods in our Showroom for retail sale and advertise them on the web site, as is currently the case with the initial offering. We have tried to make the process as simple as possible so all you need to do is come in with the goods, sign some paperwork and the next Thursday your goods will be displayed and posted. If you would like to buy any item, just have to come and see us during business hours - you are welcome to call beforehand to ensure the item is still available.
Thank you for your patience and interest through this process, it is appreciated. Should you have any questions or suggestions please feel free to contact us.

15 Saltiga Corrosion
Submitted by Kyle Evill on Thu, 2016-02-25 09:56G'Day Chaps,
Got a 2015 model Saltiga that I brought 8 months ago. The body is corroding around the bottom cap and under the spool. The paint started to bubble and found its corroding underneath. Its been washed after use every time. Anyone else had issues with the new model? Will be sending it back to daiwa this week just wanted to see if it was a one off or a few people have experienced similar things.
Cheers

Deckie
Submitted by Peko on Thu, 2016-02-25 09:01Ive tried a couple of times over the last year to help people out and take them fishing but the realities of weather and work commitments have never allowed things to come together. The guy I went fishing with historically has gone back to work for 12 months and that leaves me predominatly fishing on my own. I like to go out regularly, once a week or more, weather dependant but avoid weekends where possible. If there was somebody who likes to go out regularly, has their own gear and prepared to chip in some fuel money occassionally that would be great. The preference would be somebody South of the river as I go out of Woodman Point. Perhaps somebody thats owned a boat before and is, like me, retired. The flexibility of being retired allows for far greater probability of bringing it together.

Last weekends PGFC Tournament update
Submitted by Perth Gamefishi... on Wed, 2016-02-24 21:28***Update for those who were asking how we went at the trench on the weekend***
Over the weekend of the 20/21st of Febuary PGFC held its Bluewater Tackle Marlin Cup in the waters of the Rottnest Trench.
The weather over the weekend really played ball and gave us much better conditions than we expected. With 20 boats ranging from 19-60ft arriving at Thomson Bay for the 8:00am shotgun start being greeted greeted with slightly overcast skies and a reasonable easterly wind expectations were high. The roundup of boats followed last year’s winner saluting the President before forming up for the starting signal. The shotgun start had all boats heading out on the north side of the island chasing points in this marlin only competition.

Parachute sea anchors for drifting slow...
Submitted by STORMBOY on Wed, 2016-02-24 13:29
Hello all,
I know there have been numerous posts about this in the past but I was wondering if anybody can recommend parachute sea anchor brands for those yet to buy in 2016?
I have 560c Barcrusher and am an anchoring freak but want to try slow pitch jigging, often going out afternoons when it’s a little more choppy (as I find it hard to get up early)
Have there been many changes in technology or perhaps a new brand that has further improved things? (Great to deploy, recover and of course slow the boat down as much as possible)
I would love your input and I’m sure many other potential buyers will also value the time and effort you give.

Walpole Estuary Mouth
Submitted by Bootboot on Tue, 2016-02-23 19:10Hi all,
Hoping to head down to Walpole for the weekend fishing in my mates tinny (4.5m) and I have been searching the archives on fishing down there and have some good ideas, and we can hopefully land an elusive kingy. I have also read up on what you need to do to exit the estuary and get onto the bluewater, but I was wondering if anyone would be able to provide a mudmap of how to go about it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
