Fishing along the Gibb River Road
Submitted by Nick Davis on Mon, 2016-02-22 14:19Hi All.
I'm heading up to the Kimberley in July for a couple of weeks travelling along the Gibb River Rd & up to Mitchell Falls, etc. Unfortunately we're not going to get up as far as Kalumburu this time.
Just wondering if anyone has any tips for places to wet a line & species to target whilst we're camping, etc.
We'll be land-based as we're not taking the boat up at this stage.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Exmouth in Close - offshore
Submitted by tennis coach on Mon, 2016-02-22 13:02Hi all,
Followed a great post last week of Ruby's out wide in Exmouth
I am taking my 2 lads aged 8 + 10 to Exmouth for school holidays with our 4.5 m boat in tow
Just wondering about safety of getting out on the west side and what are my chances of getting them a fish in close
We wont be heading out into the 200 m mark, I wish but would love to get them onto a few fish in close
Would love to troll as the boys tend not to get sea sick doing this so hopefully can get them a Mackie before the sharks hit
What if any are their chances of a reef fish or two not far from the ramp
Are the leads easy to follow on the way out from Tantabiddi?
Appreciate any forthcoming Help
Please dont hesitate to Pm me with any pointers
Nothing better than getting your kids onto some quality Fish
Also any advice on Landbased as well as I am sure thay will only get out in the boat once or twice and we have 10 nights up there
Cheers Guys

autumm/winter crays question ?
Submitted by hezzy on Mon, 2016-02-22 12:34ok something iv noticed over the years is how few blokes chase the autumm & winter crays
and it has always been a curiosity of mine why that might be so
for myself i have potted for crays in the autumm/winter right up to the end of june going back to the very early 80s when i discovered how the local pros did it in close along the shallow reefs around here with good results as the crays pick up again in numbers and pot well in the autumm winter swells and dirty water .
most blokes seem to only pot for crays in the nov/dec , and given the amount of crays that are in close then on the whites it makes sense ,
but the autumm winter is well worth the effort , so is it people dont know , its too cold or days are shorter etc ??
given recs have not historically taken our full 5%of the catch why dont blokes hunt them when there in close at this time with less interference and just as good a results ?

So how does everyone else tiedown their boats?
I tie the nose down with rope and the back with a strap but the ratchet rubs on the side and scartches the paint.

Shore Catch Update - At Last the Doors are Open!!!
Submitted by Mick C on Sun, 2016-02-21 22:13The old saying that it takes 80% of the effort to complete the last 20% of the work certainly holds true. The whole “mission” to set up our business has been a difficult task as we are just one family and there has been so much work to do. Nevertheless, I always knew it would take hard work and investment to make something of value that customers might want to use.
We will open during our normal trading hours from Monday 22 February 2016. All of the current information about Shore Catch is on our website (www.shorecatch.com.au). It’s probably better you look at that, if interested, rather than me writing an “essay” here.
I know why I never pursued a career in IT – I have lost track of the number of hours required to make the site and it is a fairly boring task. A web site is a really important part of a business however and I have had to build a new one from scratch, and try to make it how I would like to view a site. It has just been published but I will continue to work to make it better, add products, keep it up to date and further develop the social media aspect. It’s new, and there will be errors (still in testing but mostly there) so please feel free to message me with anything that has been missed or is wrong.
Our product list will constantly change as items are added or deleted. The second-hand section of our site has no products yet but this will be populated with the equipment we have to date next week. We hope that Members will see this as a valuable service and consign equipment for sale with us.
Customer feedback and suggestions are so important. I have designed a feedback form and have included this in the web site as we really want to hear from you. I expect our product range and introductory price structure will vary based on the feedback we receive. The help provided by FW Members so far has been invaluable, and I have put together the feedback form to hopefully make it easy for you to let us know what you think.
You are more than welcome to visit us in Wangara and say hello.
Mick

Submitted by Bryce Day on Sun, 2016-02-21 19:16Hey all,
Been talking about the bunbury fishing comp and realized there was no deep drop prizes so a mate and i toyed with the idea out here at work, and got in contact with the bunbury fishing club and decided to make something happen! soooooo now there is a $250 prize for the biggest blue eye and $250 prize for the biggest bass along with some other things thrown in! We were thinking of making it subject to weather and if it was to rough were going to donate the prizes to the juniors section
bunbury power boat club will have more info

Teaser Rebuild
Submitted by Jason P on Sun, 2016-02-21 12:55As my Teaser is around 3 years old, it was looking a little worst for wear.
So i striped it down to find the weights used in it are steel, Stupid idea hey being used in saltwater.
Went to bunnings, where i picked up a nice bit of 70X45mm dressed pine. Original was 70X40mm, close enough i reckon.
Cut it to size & drilled out the holes for the weights, but this time used molten lead poured directly into to the weight holes, accounting for the difference of density of lead etc, etc....
Used some 4 coats marine varnish, even coating the pre drilled holes to avoid any water ingression, hopefully.
Then top coat of a nice bright danellion yellow paint, another 4 odd coats.
Then toped it off with some red glitter for blood effect, sealed with clear laquer
Replaced the old mirrors, tow point & eyes and done.
Pictures showing New Rebuilt & Old one, what was left. :)

Submitted by Noxious on Sat, 2016-02-20 21:17G'day
Been dreaming of this fish for the last couple of years. Been doing pretty well on the small to mid sized Tuna this summer. Thought we would put in a solid effort specifically chasing a Metro Mackie this morning, and it paid off! My first Metro Mackie, and hopefully a few more to come in the coming weeks.

Long Island VHF Reception?
Submitted by big john on Sat, 2016-02-20 20:59Looking at doing a week based at Long Island in April, probably just my boat.
Does anyone know if you can reach Exmouth VMR by VHF radio from around Long Island? Thinking of hiring a sat phone but may not need it if radio reception is ok.
Is there an Exmouth member who would be interested in storing my vehicle and trailer at there place (for a fee of course)? Probably safer than leaving it at the marina ramp.

how to join 50lb mono to 150lb mono and castable
Submitted by poida on Fri, 2016-02-19 18:44Hi all
Decided to have a crack at catching a shark and had one hook up in 2 trips. Got tailwhipped pretty quick and the 50lb mono was no match. Looks like i need to run a leader of at least 150lb. I am running 50lb off an alvey casting and slide baiting baits. I can't think of how to join the 50 to the 150 without destroying my guides on the cast, only idea i have had is to join it with a short piece of braid and do 2 fg knots back to back. I think running braid on the alvey, fg knot to a mono leader could be pretty dangerous.

Net building
Submitted by Comrad on Fri, 2016-02-19 14:52Hi Everyone, just wondering if I could ask for people's advice with regards to net building?
I managed to score 90 metres of really good 50mm netting, 25 meshes deep, perfect for making a 60 metre haul net at a very good price on Gumtree. I've managed to score 60 metres of 4mm galv chain from work, so, there's my weights sorted, but, I'm trying to find floats for it at the moment (those little brown plastic ones on crab nets are my preference) and I'm seeing them for $2-3 each in stores, and not much cheaper on eBay.
Does anyone have any sources where I could get cheaper floats from, I'll need about 65 floats all up, so, at $3 each, it really adds up. I have some pool noodle which I could cut up, and I reckon would be great, but, the stuff deteriorates after a while, and if I'm putting the effort into making the net, I might as well do it right.

Anyone want to come to Papua New Guinea? Discounted spots available to join our crew.
Submitted by dkonig82 on Wed, 2016-02-17 21:06Some of you may have seen my report of my trip to Eastern Fields Papua New Guinea in December.
http://fishwrecked.com/forum/eastern-fields-papua-new-guinea-aboard-k20
We had a bad run with the weather, but the place has absolutely insane potential so I was dead keen to get back absolutely ASAP.
An opportunity has come up for some discounted spots at short notice. In addition, we'll be hitting a new reef system that so far as we know has never had a popper thrown at it.
As soon as I heard about the offer I booked flights, and there are a couple of spaces still available.
You'd need to be able to get to Port Moresby by 2 April, fish 6 days, back in Port Moresby on the 9th. So it's 1 week off work. Flights from Australia are easy and quick.
If you want more details please drop me a message. It's certain to be an awesome trip and 2 of the tenders are now substantially bigger than what we fished off last time which opens up even more potential. Pricing is $1500 less than the usual rate (I cannot publish it here as it is very discounted) so drop me a message if you want to get involved.
At least 4 of the people joining this trip were on my December trip - so that tells you something about how good it is that we are all back again less than 4 months later!
Dan

Filleting cobbler
Submitted by C.P on Wed, 2016-02-17 15:59I speared a couple of cobbler last night, one of my favorite eating fish
Havent caught any for a while but always struggle with filleting them
Last night I cut their heads off before filleting & found them difficult to grip
I made a reasonable job of it in the end but it was a chore
Previously Ive left the heads on & snapped the spines off but then still worried
about gripping the heads.
Does any one have any tips?

books about fishing
Submitted by lastcast on Mon, 2016-02-15 22:40Sometimes, for whatever reason, you just aren't able to get out for awhile.
So myself, I'm happy to find an interesting and unusual fishing based book.
My top three:
Lone Dhow by Conan Doyle ( the son of the author of the Sherlock Holmes stories)
Craytales ( has come up previously on this forum)
The Longest Silence by Thomas McGuane.
