I was channel flicking last night and found an excellent fishing show on Access 31. It was on about 2000 Saturday evening. The show host was awesome, catching squid on a jig in one hand, pinkies on the other and jig ready to go to catch calamari. Awesome and worth checking out. May have been called Australia Outbound, any one correct this???

Made up some christmas trees last night, came out pritty good ,now to try them out on some fish.

Well with days passing by and next year coming close, maybe now might be the time we actually start looking at working out the exmouth trip that everyone is talking about.

Would be good to get some more idea's on whos going, who needs deckie spots if there is any available, where people want to stay and fish out from, also we can look at sponsorship and prize structure and catagories of what people want to fish for etc.

I for one would love to fish, and hopefully some discussion with certain people might be able to have me fish, but time will tell.

maybe we can get a rough idea of the month people want to fish, then just lock the dates in and who can make it will and who that can't miss out, i know there's no way of making everyone happy but if we can get somewhere in the 10 boat number it would be good anymore would be even better.

Depending on the prizes donated/ sponsors etc, there is 2 options as a small entry fee or just a free entry, something else that can be worked out depending on who we can get and what prizes etc.

Also any other idea's from other members that are looking at going would be great to get this off the ground would be great.

Oh well bad weather , so great time to stock up on fishing supplies especially when you have a gift voucher left over for christmas and you get a discount on top

Years ago i held the AAA state victorian mirror carp record, dont know if its still current, my dad also holds the vic and australian record for red cod which is like a bearded rock cod he has had that since 1988.

So do tell if you have one or was very close to one

I'm moving on from Ranger C'vale to work at a Tackle World store in Mandurah, plenty of reasons but on good terms with the owner of the store where I am now, but it's just time to move on.

I wont be spending much time at Ranger over the next month however if any of my special customers need to come in just phone up first so your not disapointed if you just turn up and I'm not there.

My experiences at Ranger over the last year have been great, the boss there is a real champion and I'm so glad we are able to move on with a hand shake and a smile, it's been a real character (sp) building experience for me and a great stepping stone towards going onto bigger n better things.

Just put this up so nobody can start rumors, everything is sweet and above board and on good terms.

i was just wondering where steep point is and is it just balloon fishing up there? a lot of u guys talk about it so i am curious? plus is there a camp site?

Just wondering for all though sporting fisho's out there what your best caught fish on the smallest lineclass? Doesnt have to be the heaviest fish but one that gave you sum stick maybe? Ive been having some great fun of late on light gear and just curious on others captutres, cheers.

Dont know if anyone else gets into it but Ive just made around five kilo's today in preparation for winter night fishing , basically i use topside or rump steak  after all the fat is cut off cut into thick strips about 3/4 of an inch and  baste in your favorite substances like :

-Chilli oil

-Worchester Sauce

-Chilli flakes

-Salt and Pepper

-Bbq Sauce

-Steak spice

-Honey

-Curry powder

Basically anthing in your spice cupboard , then take the middle racks out of your oven and leave only the top and bottom rack , place al foil on the bottom rack so the basting wont drip onto the bottom of the oven so the mrs dont whinge and then thread the strips of meat onto wooden skewers so that the hang down in between the top rack . Once the top rack is full turn the oven just on  , if its a gas oven you only need the pilot light on , and electric on at the lowest setting and prop the top of the oven door open about an inch . Curing time is around 3 hours or untill meat shrivels and goes dry looking , then keep them in an airtight container and take them out on the boat or on the beach with a beer , cheers feral

So why are only certin shops allowed to stock them?

I know we have discussed this previously, but I was wondering if there are any updated thoughts.
What are people's preferred knots for tying braid to a mono or fluoro leader. I generally tie double unis (because their easy and with my old eyes that makes a big difference at night).
However, with really light braid and leaders, I have had one or two knots slip under heavy pressure.
Any suggestions?

The guys at work and I were standing around discussing important things like fishing and golf. And we thought there may be an opportunity to combine the two. Using a special rod holder, and with a golf ball attached to your line, youcould practice your golf swing by cracking drives off of the top of a groyne wall - and at the same time get your bait out a bit further. The ball would act as your sinker. Any thoughts?

I am hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction for some landbased fishing options in Darwin. I am going to a conference there next year and I plan to book in for at least one charter. If the landbased fishing in Darwin is any good I will just stick to that one charter.

I hope this is the right forum for this question - pardon my ignorance, but what is the difference between the Penn 850ss and 8500ss - and the others 450 - 4500 etc? I have an 8500ss and it is superb - about 8 years old and i am looking at buying a backup but can't find an 8500ss.

After not having too much success at a range of Metro spots recently, I decided to head back to my old reliable haunt at Hillarys last evening in the hope I could capture a decent fish.
I managed to sneak out of the office early so I arrived about an hour before sunset, which gave me time to throw out some soft plastics.
I carry a small, cheap, two piece, spin rod in my boot all the time, so I coupled that up with my Stradic 2500FI. Seems to be a pretty good combo as I was able to toss the soft plastics a fair way. The tip is probably a bit too soft, but it did the job. Using my 50c bargain barrel squidgys I picked up a herring and most exciting of all, a first, a pinky on soft plastics. Sadly it wasn't much bigger than the herring, but still it was good to catch a first.
After dark I pulled out my bigger outfit and threw out a few pilchards. There were plenty of bait fish hanging around my burley trail, and I had a few reasonable hits on my small outfit, which was now kitted up with my experimental rig, hoping a tailor or two might be around - or even a skippy or two.
Managed a few more herring on that rig and around 8.30pm I started to feel a bit hungry so I decided to start packing up. I set the small rod down with the drag almost on free spool and started collecting my pile of gear together when zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, the litle rod went off.
Picked it up, set the hook and tightened the drag up a bit. Whatever it was on the end of the line just kept going. I tightened the drag a bit more as I could see my line was half gone, no reaction. It just kept going.
Tightened the drag up a bit more as it headed for the end of the southern breakwall. Ping.
I learned a lesson there. Throwing out unweighted mulies at night on two kilo line off the rocks may be fun, but you aren't going to stop a decent fish. While it was probably a stingray, judging by the way it just peeled off with no head shakes, it will be the last time I fish that light off the rocks - especially at night.

Closed fish exclusion devices lead to significant fines and penalties

A commercial fisherman’s action, in fishing for prawns near Shark Bay with illegally altered nets, has now cost him more than $197,000.

In a Perth court today, 44-year-old Richard Frederick Denton, of Nannup, pleaded guilty to breaching conditions of his managed fishery licence in August of 2006, by using nets that were not fitted with a Fish Exclusion Device (FED).

When the fisherman’s prawn trawler was intercepted in Denham Sound and boarded, by the officers from the Department of Fisheries patrol vessel Walcott, it was found that FEDs in three nets on the commercial fishing vessel had been closed off and bound with plastic tie cables.

The devices are used to assist in allowing a significant number of fish, like baby pink snapper and juveniles of other species, to escape from the nets, with only a relatively small loss of prawns through the FED.

After the discovery of the altered nets, Denton’s trawler was ordered back to port at Carnarvon, where the catch and nets were seized.

The trawler’s haul of prawns, scallops, crabs and squid on the day was sold for $52,021.60, with the funds held in trust pending the outcome of today’s case.

Those funds, along with the proceeds from the sale of the three nets involved ($12,000), a fine and court costs of $2669.20 and the additional mandatory penalty of $130,768.80 has led to a total cost of $197,459.60 for the illegal activity.

Gascoyne Region Compliance Manager Kieth Van Dongen said Fish Exclusion Devices were an important sustainability measure and the deliberate binding of them was a serious matter and today’s court outcome had reflected that.

“The FEDs help to avoid large numbers of juvenile fish being brought to the surface and dumped on the deck of the fishing trawler, so they are very important in reducing by-catch mortality and the taking of non-target species,” Mr Van Dongen said.

“The devices are relatively small anyway, but they are a significant method to help release the juvenile fish, while retaining the large majority of the prawn catch.”
