$50,000 boost for Ocean Reef Boat Harbour plan
Premier Alan Carpenter today presented the City of Joondalup with a $50,000 cheque as part of a $700,000 State Government commitment towards the city’s Ocean Reef Marina precinct structure plan.
Mr Carpenter said planning for the transformation of Ocean Reef Marina into a major boat harbour, commercial and recreational precinct was well under way.
“I congratulate the city for ensuring strong community representation through the reference group in overseeing this project,” he said.
“A concept plan for the precinct is soon to be released and a business case is being developed.
“Local people recognise the project’s enormous potential to create jobs, improve boating facilities and provide a world-class recreation precinct for the northern suburbs.
“I am sure that they, along with local member John Quigley MLA , who is a strong advocate, are looking forward to seeing the structure plan completed and development under way.”
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan, who initiated the State Government commitment in 2004, said that Ocean Reef Marina was a valuable location for such a development.
“While Western Australians have a seemingly insatiable appetite for recreational boating and for oceanside recreational activity, there are very few metropolitan locations where such development is acceptable,” Ms MacTiernan said.
“At Ocean Reef we are fortunate to have an established facility, with room to expand and community support.
“Recreational boating is becoming more and more popular as part of WA’s lifestyle and we need to provide the coastal facilities for this.”
The structure plan, which will detail the size and location of development, is expected to be completed in mid-2009.

Wow, my boats at the doctors.

Well, that's me out of the water for a whileCry.

When I bought my boat 8 mths ago, I knew it needed a bit of attention to the hull, in particular the keel. It had been given a DIY fiberglass makeover & I just knew one day it would have to be done professionaly.

I went through the yellow directory this morning & tried a few numbers. I tried 5 numbers, 3 were too busy, one went to message bank & only one was interested. After a short chat over the phone, I tried to get a rough idea of price. I was told in the region of $1500 & $2000.

Not bad I thought, that's about what I was expecting. He said they had a quite spell, so I went home, fetched the boat & set off to Wangara. A fair trek from Maddington.

I arrived at the place, the guy came out, rolled under the boat & all I heard was that sharp intake of breath that mechanics make. You know, the one that means it's gonna cost a hell of a lot more than first thought.

He rolled out from under & said "it's gone mate, no good! You don't actualy use it do ya?". Ok, give it to me, how much to put it right.

$8000 was the reply. I was gutted. Really, really gutted. I was in a whole world of hurt. The boat cost that much. I ralised I'd been ripped off.

Driving back home (with a tear in my eye), my phone rang. It was the guy I'd called & left a message. A quick chat with him & he told me to take it round.

Off to O'connor then. This guy looked & made the same noises, told me the same things & then said he could do it all, make it good as new for $5000 & it would be finished in 4 weeks.

So that's it, it's at the doctors. Costing alot more than expected but, hey what price safety. Apparently I'm lucky to still have a boat & even be here to moan about the cost.

So a word from me, who learnt the hard way. If you're gonna buy a second hand boat, get it checked by a prof before you part with your hard earned cash.

Water Police in the sound

When we were just moving from the sound to head out under the bridge to head out to five fathoms got pulled up by the police for a safety inspections.

Basically asked to site all safety gear on board as well as RST and they were off.

I asked if they knew what it was outside and they said they didnt know. They had just been cruising on the inside of Garden island checking boats.

Squid question

Time to start thinking of inshore options when the weather is bad , so I just might go squiding.

My question is how do you kill them ?
How to look after them for the table?

Never fished for them so I don't know what the best way to look after them is.

Thanks
Paul

Caring For Your Fish

To stop my fish from getting bruised when bringing them on board I use a wet old lounge cushion or foam rubber to put the fish on.
This stops them flapping about and damaging the flesh and makes it a simple job to spike them.
Just rinse the cushion/foam in fresh water ,squeeze and leave to dry ready for next trip--usually get 8-10 trips out of each one

Garfish

I was watching "fishing Australia" & a few garfish were caught in NSW among heaps of other varieties you would catch in WA. As I used to enjoy getting a few around Port Philip Bay using a long float i wondered if i will encounter any in WA? Aussie bass was another fish you fishwreckers never mention.

I`d rather be fishin`

Not iceing your catch

Just after reading the commodore marine post about the fishing boat.

Just wondering why everyone says You must Ice your catch.

We sometimes do and sometimes dont. And honestly can't tell a difference from eating between a fish which has been put on ice and one which hasn't.

They are put straight into a killtank, and bled.

We have a name

How's this sound i thought with the user names Paul G ,and Jesse G that
" Double G's "
was a good one

petrol burglers

Interesting Perth weather

I was just having a look at Seabreeze. There are some interesting weather forecasts for the next seven days. Shore fishing conditions looks ok and there is not too much swell.
Wednesday and Thursday looks interesting. The lump looks like a tidal wave is coming.

Braid on non level wind reel

Reading the recent discussions on Saltists and non level wind reels, I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how best to handle braid when you are trying to feed it onto a non level wind reel.
Many thanks, Colin Hay

felt tip squid scent pen

heres a extract from a fishing report i get emailed from over east and found this quite interesting.

Is it available over here and has anyone used it, some feedback would be great

The red hot new product in the squid catching world at the moment from Japan is the felt tip squid scent pen. It is like a texta colour pen loaded with a scientifically developed pheromone scent that the squid go nuts for. The pen comes in two flavours / scents, shrimp and live fish, you simply apply it down the side of the jig, all our staff members have had two squid sessions in the last week where scented squid jigs dramatically out fished the same unscented squid jig. If you love your squid fishing give them a go, just remember your bag limit is '10'. The pen scent can also be applied to lures and soft plastics.

PS. PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A VICTORIAN EXTRACT AND THE WA BAG LIMIT IS 15 PER PERSON AND BOAT LIMIT OF 30!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
