General Fishing Chat

Fishing WA

Think I am going to have to give up watching Fishing WA live.

The last few episodes I have noticed the high incidence of general ads and ads for the sale of extreme gear on the show itself. Today was no different. I think that it was pretty evenly split by my reckoning, about 50/50 fishing and ads on a show that runs for 29 minutes.

Understand everyone has to make a living but I dont think I will be putting myself out to watch another episode as it runs on TV. Record it, watch the little amount of fishing which is interesting enough and flick the rest.

Red Emperor off Cape Nat!!

Got word that a Red was taken off Cape Nat yesterday , will post a pic if/when I get one , must have been 6 years ago one was taken at Naturaliste Reef . The other unusual species making a show off the Duns Beaches is Giant Herring , with quite a few being landed in the past fortnight , mainly by people throwing light surface lures ....

Snelled hooks on a paternoster rig

I'm keen to try snelling hooks on the dropper loops of a paternoster rig but unsure exactly how to go about it. I'm thinking of snelling two hooks together, then trimming the excess line off so I'm just left with one hook snelled to the other, then connect the snelled hooks to the paternoster dropper loop as you would normally. I'm just not sure if that's the right way of doing it. Does anyone else do this that can shed some light for me?

time for a big mack

has anyone had any mackie action yet in perth? I saw a school of bait fish today getting hammered by birds so the time must be getting close

So how did everyone go today?

Many of you guys that got out today have much luck?  I'm all geared up for tomorrow and wouldn't mind hearing the good news.  :)

When will we see the first canoe caught mackie - coming back through Cockburn Sound yesterday lunchtime had three free jumping (chasing bait fish) just on the edge of the shipping channel - would have stopped but had bagged out on dimersals and did not wish to be greedy -  huge bait schools on the sounder with large fish on the perimeter

Come on paddlers who will be first

Salmon Fishing 2013

How is the Salmon Fishing season shaping up around Dunsborough way this year? The last 2 years have been very poor due to the Ocean currents being so warm.

Does anyone have any future predictions for the Ocean current temperature around April this year or is it going to be another fizzer?

How to catch bonito

 On a boat.

Im a massive trolling noob, any lures you reccommend?

Hillarys Marina Boat show

Just to advise you all who may be going out from the Hillarys marina on the weekend of the 17th March,The BIA (boating industry Of Australia) are haveing their show, that is great ,except ,the car& trailer

Will be closed off By 40%,that means that of the 247 trailer bays there will be a lot less access for those who want to go out. Please contact the manager if you have any concernse, his details are as follows:

Chris St.Roas
Harbour Manager
Hillarys Boat Harbour
Coastal Facilities
Department of Transport
Tel: 9448 7142

He said that we,the trailer boat users can park our cars/trailers in the oerflow park situated in the North eastern side of the launching ramps.Thois is ok but if you are a lone fisherman/boat user, you will have too,:launch you'r boat, make it fast to the end of the jetty, take you'r car & find a parking area,,possible some few minutes walk away, and mapart from annoying some people by not moving you'r boat quickly ,you could find someone has stollen a rod or two, lets face it,some people do take what is not theirs, while you are gone, not just when you go out,but also when you return. If,as I suspect, many of you are to appathetick to do anything or just do not care,Fine, but other wise phone Chriss up and voice you'r concerns, after all,Hillarys was built for the trailer boat person and apart from Ocean Reef & Quinns is all we have in the Northern suburbs, but down the other side of the Swan river, there is Cockbourn,A lovely ramp, the Two at Rockingham, basic but usable, then another at point Peron, another lovely ramp.I think the only reason we have just the one good one with all of 247 bays that we must share with the cars that the people go to the commercial shops from,is that the goverment treat us with the contempt we seem to diserve> just my views but I hope othrs will read this and add thier own. After all,its not that we are not paying a lot of money for our weekend of pleasure.:Boat Rego,Trailer rego,Fuel tax,(meant for roads) then the fees for launching & parking, the serviceing of motors, the bait, safety gear,Oh shit,I think some of you must earn far to much money and simply do not give a stuff.Diver.

Port Geographe

Thinking of heading out from Port Geo this Sunday. Being a Dunsborough local, I am yet to fish this area, so any tips would be much appreciated. Just wanna show my old man a good time, as he doesn't get to go out much. Really keen on getting into some decent whiting or whatever u recommend. I've got a polycraft 4.5 btw. Cheers!

Macks and tuna

 Hi folks,

ive just had my first shot at rigging up my own lures. I've got some richter jelly babes that I rigged up with 50lb line and some good 3/0 hooks.  Double crimped so should hold well.

Anyhow, I was wondering if anyone has some pointers.  I've never specifically targeted Tuna before, and I'm hoping to get my 1st this weekend.  I will be launching from hillarys and generally head to the NE side of rotto.  I don't intend to head out further than that (this is where I do my shark fishing and bottom bouncing).

Question is, am I best off trolling around the 3 mile, or heading towards rotto?  Should I be looking for working birds or bottom structure?  Perhaps both?  I will also chuck out a mackie lure or 2 in the spread, will they work together, or are the trolling speeds for both types of lure too different.

i don't want anyone's specific spots (but if you're feeling generous I may as well), but any help or guidance is greatly appreciated.

back of 3 mile

for all you weekenders, not much weed, 24 degrees, few schools of bonito and baitfish, no macks to report, hope you have better luck, may try again after the weekend

Marlin Fishing in November

Hi everyone,

Just wondering where the best place in Australia would be to catch a marlin in November/December (have heard Rowley Shoals is a good bet)? - am hoping to surprise the other half with a few days chase for his birthday.

Any info on decent, not break the bank charters would also be appreciated, we do have our own boat but we're in Perth so taking it to QLD etc isn't really an option.

Thanks

Downrigger / Electric reels

 Hi all,

I am considering investing in a downrigger for better coverage when trolling and it occured to me that it might be possible to use an electric reel and bent but rod with a downrigger bomb as an occational downrigging system.

Has anyone tried this? Would it work?

The expense of both a downrigger and an electric reel is a bit much for how much I would use them so just tryig to save a few bucks and have both options available.

Anyone heading to Greenhead this weekend/week?

I'm Heading up to Greenhead for a week with 2 newbies that have flown over from Sydney and Melbourne. Havn't seen these chaps in over 25years since leaving to come to Australia, a little school class reunion. Hope to show them some decent fishing over the next week.

Going to try and do deepdrop, shallow drop, trolling and some diving over the coming week...hope to fit it all in and post later

cheers

Friday Funnys

Anyone going to the Abrolohos this long weekend

Just thinking that a few would be planning to head to the Abrolohos this long weekend?

the forecast looks amazing! Hope you have a great time.

I know many will be in Jurien for the comp too.

Great when the weather plays nice when you pre plan a trip.

Hope you all do well.

Looking forward to seeing some great photos.

lock up your trailer

Just a reminder, had a bloke at ocean reef a couple of weeks ago that had come back from an over-nighter at rotto in his 6.5-7m glass boat to find his trailer stolen off his car. What a bloody nightmare, it was a sunday too. I couldn't think of much worse coming back to a busy ramp with the Mrs to find that. I'll be padlocking mine to the car for even a long day out now, I really don't want that experience...There really is some real shit blokes out there.

Exmouth in April

Heading to Exmouth in April with a 6m boat, just after any advice / tips on where to fish, rigs, lures, tides, etc. Searched through alot of older posts but any advice appreciated. Cheers

8lb nitlon to..what weight fluoro?

hey, I'm sure this is well covered but the search function isn't the greatest on my phone.

Fishing of busso jetty with 8lb nitlon for tailor, bonito, trumpeters...etc. What lb fluoro should I be using, 16? From reading around it seems to be that almost double is about normal but then nek minnit I'm reading that people go well under their mainline weight?

I've only just got back into fishing after about ten years. (where/when the hell did all this jigging and thousand dollar spinning reels become the norm? And Egi? I'm a sucker for new shiny things and will probably get myself an Egi outfit but...like.. I got nothing)

Anyway... Fluoro... What weight would some of you recommend for (light/med) busso jetty/beach?

Cheers
