eh guys, i'm currently using a 7'6" graphite rod to flick small lures and sp around, however i also have a 7'6" fibreglass rod with glass tip that i was using when i started baitfishing for breams...

which one would achieve greater casting distance with 8lb braid and 40cm of 8lb fluoro? i'm mainly using sps and little minnows

as well which one would better allow to feel the bites?

a last question not relating to rods, any tips on how to avoid weed when using sp's and lures?

I had a spool of 8lb Fireline laying around and recently decided to put it on a cheap little reel. But it appears that the line has gone off. I reckon the breaking strain is about 8 grams now.
Has anyone heard of braid going bad after a period of time?

Yeah, I forgot my prawn net the other night, so resorted to catching big blues.  I spent most of the dive just following Soupster around.

Getting sick of watching these big prawns wandering around, I thought I would try catching them by hand.  I picked out only the big prawns - 15cm long, thinking more to grip.  My hand approached slowly to within 20mm of the prawn...grab, flick, gone; prawn settles into the silt with just his eyes poking out.  Arh, your mine now.  Hand over him, grab, flick...gone...WTF..these critters are quick.

I tried this on about 10 prawns.  ME - 0, prawns - 10.  Hmm, back to the crabs...much easier to grab!

Anyway, got me thinking.  Besides us divers, does the humble prawn have any other predators in the river?  Do the mullas eat them?  If they do, then I would think that they would have to have a big suction action (like a barra boof) to capture the prawn.

I have previously sat and watched a flathead for 20 minutes on a dive hoping to see him hunt.  A few prawns (smaller river prawns)came within range(well 5cm), but no attack.  Maybe they have to touch the flattie...or maybe the prawns reaction time is just too quick and the flatties don't bother with them....or the flatty was hiding from me!

Have any of you Mulla fishos found prawns in a captured mulla?

i am looking at getting a heavy surf/rock reel that i can use for sharks and rays and the like becuase i have finally been pressured out of an alvey by fishoreub.im looking at the rovex big boss 9500 mainly becasue its well within my budget and flangies one felt really nice and balanced. what are your suggestions? im lookingat a budget of 200 bucks and i would like a large spool capacity capable of handling 30lb braid and lotsa drag pressure.

Just got some of the new stickers from fisheries at hillarys .Just a heads up.

I need someone who is a good cabinette maker / skilled carpenter and knows his beans.

I need to biscuit join two pieces of quality teack, about an inch thick to form one big plank about 600mm long x 500mm wide. The new dash for my tub.

I am not the greatest DIY around, so if one of you has good hands and tools, or can recommend a cabinetmaker, please yell. I don't mind paying for services in yellow paper or a slab or two..

Went for a fish with a few mates last night down in the swan.

Not to sure of the name of the place, but its kinda mossy bay / pepermint gove area i think.

We were fishing there from about 7ish i guess, and had about 15 divers come along and jump in the water swimming up and down where we were fishing.
Found this bloody rude, and quite a few times my lure came within a metre of 2 of them.

Just thought I'd mention this because it was bloody annoying and these guys seemed to think they owned the water. As we said, we would take no responsibility for a treble through someones arm, or leg, or reg hose......
Not to mention, they didnt even have the decents to ask if we would mind if they swam about.....

Rant over!

I was looking at the Google satellite image of Two Rocks and noticed a beach just south of the marina where there looks to be a nice gap leading out from the beach into a reefy area. Does anyone know what the fishing is like there. It looks pretty good from the satellite, Many thanks, Colin Hay

Does anyone know if the water up there is dirty due to the cyclone. Got a few days off and thinking about a quick bolt up. Mr G and co is it worth it? Just wondering if the water is dirty on the Tanta side. Probably go and camp at Pilgramunna. I imagine it would be on the gulf side. Does it affect it on the gulf side if its really stirred up?

Any one used Rock Crabs as bait before, we were at the North mole yesterday, got bored after catching nothing so the kids and I got stuck into catching a few of these rock crabs for bait trials.

We only caught three of them.

Tackleshack Doug and I headed up to my breaming spot last night for a quiet little fish away from the seabreezes.

We landed about a dozen bream between us (all released) and a number of Grunters. Some of the bream were just size, with a number ranging from little tackers to just under size.

We tried a variety of baits and I just thought I would pass on our findings.

The old reliable peeled prawn attracted a lot of constant attention and landed a few nice fish. However, they also attracted most of the grunters and the smaller bream.

I was also using whole whitebaits for awhile and they were also attracting interest. However, the fish tended to pick at them a bit and quite often dropped the bait quite quickly.

Half whitebaits semed to attract a lot of interest. I think by cutting them in half they let out more odour. The fish also tended to be more aggressive with these baits.

Now, these feeding activities may well relate to the size of the fish, and I expect that when the bigger bream arrive, whole whitebaits or blue sardines may be the bait to entice the big ones.

I think the big thing to remember is that, if possible,take a variety of baits as bream can be finnicky at times.

A SPEARGUN fisherman was dragged three kilometres by a huge blue marlin off New Zealand's Great Barrier Island.

When 18-year-old Nick Dobby speared the 213kg marlin last weekend it began a battle which lasted two and a half hours and carried him three kilometres, NZPA reported.

He said when he speared the fish from a distance of five metres it took off with "explosive power" - dragging him and the buoy attached to his spear through the water.

He stayed above the water for most of the battle as his friend, Mark Colville, followed on their boat, encouraging him and making sure he did not get tangled in the line, he told The New Zealand Herald.

He never thought of abandoning the fight, NZPA reported.

"If you're an idiot for pulling the trigger, then you have to stay with it."

After two hours he fired his fourth and final shot at the marlin when it rounded on the boat.

"It was thrashing its bill and wanted a piece of us, too. That's when it started to get a little bit out of control. The bill would slice you up, too."

But the thought of injury never crossed his mind, NZPA reported.

"The adrenaline was going though," Mr Dobby said.

It was only when the fish was hauled onto the boat he realised its size.

"I knew it was a record because I knew there had never been a blue marlin speared in New Zealand before."

NZPA said Mr Dobby would have the marlin's head mounted and the rest of it chopped up ready to be smoked.

Found these old photos from 9 years ago, dodgy shirts and bad glasses but what kind of fish are they.  I reckon they are both catfish but not sure whatsort.  Both bait caught down the east coast of OZ.

New to the site and my first post - Great forum BTW, very helpful!

I'm on holidays for a week and haven't been fishing for years though i've done a ton of fishing in my younger days. Decided to go down to Miami and fish at the cut but went at dawn, mid-day, dusk under the jolly frog between the bridge and the jetty and got 0 bites using a typical small gang hook and some white/blue bait.

Got depressed and tried again the next day with the same result. Swapped locations on the third day and still nothing!

I have no idea what was going on but it annoyed me greatly so i cut my Miami holiday short and came up to Perth again. Spoke with a bloke at the local tackle shop today who said to try for some whiting north of hillarys and managed to pull up a few tonight. Glad to have a result!

Anyway, would love to shoot the breeze with you guys over the coming months and am looking forward to my Shark Bay holiday at the end of the year!

Ok. So more business to do. This time it's Geraldton on Friday. I have booked in to the S-Bends so I can have a little play while I am away. Any reports from this area?

i've just read an older post by Ryan Thipthorp on charte boats and cancelling/postponing trips if weather is bad.

Just thought I'd tell my experience.

Few months back a workmate arranged a night charter. Saturday night out past Rotto. None of us are experienced boaties but wanted to try it. $165 per head. Reputable firm (No names/ No pack drill)

The skipper complained b4 he left that he was doing a double shift since the skipper booked to take us out was unable to make it (family reasons)

Left at Sundown supposed to back at 2am.

A couple were seasick before the sun set properly (young fellas, never been on a boat before). The Skipper must have had a pilots licence the speed he was hitting the waves/swell  I tried to use the loo and couldn't even stand still enough to point percy. (no light) Decided to sit down - wrong move! Boat hit a wave, I hit the roof and my rear bounced off the  toilet. Great bruise the next day - wife thought it very funny!

Every time we stopeed and were told to drop our lines over, no one got a line to the bottom before we were ordered to reelin-were going to another spot. At least a dozen times this happened.  By this time only 4 of us were standing then my mate gave in and I followed, to berley the water. The back of the boat was pitching 45deg off horizontal and perth lights were lookoing like a seesaw.

We got back to shore at 10:30 pm. No fish, not even a bite. All but 2 sea sick and all swearing we would never use that company again. No refund no discount for another trip no apology mothing

Only after that did I learnh enough about the waves and swell to realise that the trip should have been postponed

 Ah well you win some ya lose some

My bosses are going fishing inside Two Rocks Marina on the weekend. I have never fished there myself, so any advice that anyone can pass on about best spots, types of fish that could be caught, etc. would be greatly appreciated (I need to get back in their good books).

Just moved here last March & have had some luck fishing the outer 5 fathom & 2 sisters for King George, Foxfish & Black Arse.  With snapper season opening this week , can anyone provide advice on where to target & time of day or night to fish for Snapper?  Keep hearing about the tyre reef in Warnbro but have no clue where it is.  Usuallly fish out of the Bent Hook ramp.  Is this wind going to calm down any time soon.  Monday it was on us at 930 AM.  Any tips on bait appreciated,  Currently using squid & herring.  Cheers, Ben
