Monties in April

Starting to bounce an idea around in my head about heading up to the Monties in my boat for part of the April school holidays.

I know there's a few crew on here who have done it on recreational vessels so what I'm after is any pointers they may have for such a trip. For example what not to bother taking, what things you consider essential, is there much travelling involved once there to get into fish (fuel?????), good camping locations etc.

Obviously its not something to be taken lightly, due to the distances involved as well as the need to be completely self sufficient. I would prefer to head up with another boat or two, so if your keen on maybe exploring the option of doing a serious sportfishing and spearing trip in your own well equipped and reliable, seaworthy vessel let me know via PM and we'll see what we can do. I will be departing from Onslow.

Sorry, not looking for any crew at this stage.

questions on tailor fishing

hi guys,

i've been fishing the river for a while, using plastics and lures with some success and i am now willing to try and get some fish from the sea!!problem is i've been trolling lures and throwing big poppers around in Mauritius and don't know how to fish in oz..

i have a 10' silstar and a matching shakespeare reel with 15lb mono on it. I'd like to get into some tailor and would like some advice as last night the guys around me were catching a few and i wasn't getting interest from the fish! i tried the moles and would like to try beach fishing, however i don't know the does and don't of beach fishing in perth and i don't want to annoy swimmers...

what set-up to use? what rig? what hook size? what bait? and where?

are metal slices worth a try or should i buy bait?

any special technique or retrieve? let it sit there or retrieve it?

as well is there any time and moon phase when the odds are better?

last question how to rig a bait with ganged hook for it to stay straight on the hooks?

any help or advice would be much appreciated, anything you don't want to post PM please

thanks guys

Pinaroo Point heads up

I dropped down to Pinaroo Point for a spur of the moment fish last night. Unfortunately the wind was howling, which made fishing conditions less than ideal.
However, I did manage a few herring, one of them the biggest I have ever caught.
There seemed to be a heap of herring down there as I caught my fish on 5/0 gangs chasing tailor - and I missed a lot of fish.
So if you are keen for a herring feed I would suggest you give Pinaroo some thought,
All the best, Colin

Pinky

One of the Pinky's I got last Thursday

Wanted (borrow): old 121.5 MHz EPIRB

Has anyone upgraded to the new 406MHz and have an old one lying around that I could borrow? Or have an old 121.5 MHz they wont be using for the next week and a half? I'm heading away south for Australia Day, leaving on Friday morning (23rd) and returning on Sat (31st), so if I could get use of one it would be hugely appreciated.

I'll throw a carton of beer into the equation to sweeten the deal.

- Cheers.

busselton in may

what should i be targeting?

small fish?

big fish?

rigs?

baits?

lures?

will be there for a week fishing everyday so plenty of time to try a bit of everythink!

many thanks for any responce!

What to catch?

Right boys

Not being local I am not sure of all your weird and wonderful species.  Therefore I am asking that if you were in my shoes what would you target and how would you catch it.  This might give some ideas and stop me from trying catch something that aint there!

Resturant sized marron

Just went away to the deep south for a few days and stopped in for lunch at a nice little place. They had marron on the menu, so of course, I had to indulge. 2 marron and salad thankyou very much. I then sat back and watched the marron in the fishtank ranging in sizes from just legal to impressive. However I was very surprised at the size of the five marron halves that where served up on my plate. Surprised

These are yabbies was my first thought!!! Yell

The biggest may of gone 55/60mm carapace but the others where well less than that.

Can somebody tell me if it is even legal to serve up undersize marron? Im sure they have there own marron ponds so its not like they are poaching or anything like that but I still thought the marron would have to be of legal size?

sharks

whats is the best bait and rigs for sharks of the beach?

Your target for 09

Just wondering what everyone's magic fish is for 09, or the type of fish you are going to put a lot of effort in to catch or better a PB?  Mine is definately to try and get a big blue marlin or 30kg plus GT on popper.  Whats yours?

How has your fishing evolved?

Just wondering how your fishing has changed/evolved over the last 5 years, do you fish more, do you fish less, are you catching more, are you catching less, is it the technology thats helping, is it the rigs, the learning of ground, the learning of techniques?  Whats the trend in your fishing over the years?

Terns

How good are their eyesight? Was just down the beach and they were hovering about 10m above me. Each cast they tried to nail my baitcast mulie, then on retrieve they tried again.

When I actually hooked up they came closer to inspect my catch. When they realised that it was a blowi they buggered off. I eventually managed 1 x miniscule whiptail and they came over absolutely FROTHING for me to give em the whippy. They were literally like 2m from me hovering for the fish. Bugger that hooked im up as livey and pitched im back out. This time a tern dove and nailed it - line doubled over and I was on, albeit to a tern that soon let go once it realised what was going on. Cheeky buggers

30sec later the whippy was gone, maurauding bloody blowie school *BAH*

Still impressed with the eyesight on these terns though.

How is Carnarvon going for fish?

Hello,

I will be heading to Carnarvon for my (normally) annual trip on the 27th January, inshaa'Allaah. Ordinarily we would be there for several weeks and mainly fish the Quobba coast, but we may not be able to make it there this trip. We will be there until the 1st February, when we will be leaving for a week at Steep Point (our first trip to Steep Point).

So, if I may ask the following:

1) Any general reports regarding fish in Carnarvon lately? I have heard even Garth's Rock has been absolutely fishless, so how about any spots closer to the town (1 mile/estuaries/etc)? Any heads up that can be given by any locals? We will be fishing land-based.

2) Any general pointers/hints/tips about Steep Point that anyone would like to give, as it will be our first trip there? We have a spot booked on the Point, as the beach was fully booked. Any tips would be great (ie can baits be dropped deep or is the bottom reefy like Quobba?)

Thanks,

David.

gaffs

hey all,

me good mate dropped my gaff out from point perron lately in about 60 metres (on a stonkin dhu, pictures soon).

not sure what brand it was, but jeez it was a ripper. scored it at an auction for $20. it hade a nice wide gape on the hook  (prob about 120mm), stainless hook of about 8-9mm diameter, on a solid thin aluminium shaft of around 15mm ish, and a foam handle with a lanyard. all up, probably around 4 foot long overall.

just wanted to know if anyone else has seen one like it, what brand it is, where i can get one, etc, etc.

                                                               OR

any other good brands youse can recomend.

the mako ones look ok. nice and solid. also the black magic fibreglass ones look the goods, but unsure about the lifespan of fibreglass.

what do youse reckon?

Just for info there are a heap of pro pots back on 5 fatham south side of rotto.

These pots would have atleast 30-40m of rope on top of the water so be carefull. We picked one up on friday afternoon as they were hard to see with the sun.

at a guess i would say they moved there pots onf rom deaper and couldnt be bothered changing the ropes over???

Pretty careless i think to have that much rope on

Cheers

Saragosa 18000

Guys i'm in the market for new spin reel to do a bit of bottom bouncing/jigging with. While I would love a Stella or Saltiga can't warrant spending that much so I was looking at the Saragosa. Has anyone got one and given it a good workout? Also what else is there in that $4-500 range that would do the job. I've read a few people have got the Ryobis and are happy with them. Any other recommendations? Thanks.
