Full Moon Surprise
Submitted by crasny1 on Sat, 2011-08-13 09:02Well after a week off work, and the wind OK. Not the tide and moon for a arvo/evening fish.
Headed West from Dampier and found the spot. Fish on sounder but not what you would call a bonanza.
Then hell broke out. Every drop a fish. Bagged out on Blueline and Black Snaps in 20mins. Then as we still wanted to fish only kept other species. As it was evening/night the price fish like trout wasnt on the menu, but after 2 hours, a further bag out on big Flag (which we love and target --Horror horror) decided well what now.
It just was a fish a drop, whatever we used got nailed. Tested some thoeries on old bait, no didnt matter, nailed.
Low tide and full (ish) moon normally I would have thought social fish, but this was stella, and the stella 10T SW finally got to sing a little, just to reveal a 3-4ft Blacktip.
Has anyone else experienced stella days when you wouldnt have thought so.
Today going for a squid, to much fish in the fridge. Dont freeze our fish, gives us a reason to eat fresh and go again. But with 2 days to go fishing wise, bagged out on white fillets, its time for a target change. Squid and sportsfish on the menu. Watch out Queenies, here come the fly wand.

Qld's natural disasters take toll on sealife
Submitted by bod on Fri, 2011-08-12 16:27
The terrible animal death toll from Queensland's summer of natural disasters is adding up, with a jump in turtle deaths stacking on top of a high number of dugong fatalities.
Figures released on Friday show 649 turtle deaths were reported in the first seven months of 2011.
The toll has jumped by more than 200 compared with the same period last year when 436 turtles died.
It comes after figures showed 96 dugongs washed up dead on the state's coastline in the first seven months of this year, compared with 79 for the whole of 2010.
A breakdown of the figures show 90 turtles died in the Gladstone area in central Queensland, home to a major port and a growing number of ships and dredging projects for the gas export industry.
There were 84 deaths in Townsville, 57 in Moreton Bay, 14 in Hervey Bay and the remainder spread across the state.
Queensland Environment Minister Vicky Darling said the majority of deaths were from malnutrition, sickness and diseases.
Like dugongs, turtles were struggling to find food because seagrass beds, their major food source, had been impacted by turbidity and low salinity following flooding in the coastal catchments, Ms Darling said on Friday.
"These are tragic and confronting numbers and they can be directly attributed to the floods and cyclones," she said.
"These animals are struggling to find a food source and literally starving to death."
Ms Darling said the turtles were weak and as a result spent more time on the water surface where they're more vulnerable to boat strikes.
The situation in Gladstone was the most concerning, she said.
Former environment minister Kate Jones established a panel of marine scientists to examine the causes of deaths in Gladstone.
Ms Darling said the panel's work wasn't finalised yet but a number of initial recommendations were underway such as improved reporting and turtle health checks.

Whats your worst fishing trip??
Submitted by Browny on Fri, 2011-08-12 13:26Following on from Ryan C's best capture thread, I thought what about the opposite - the fishing trip from hell!
My worst one was in late 2005 at Kalbarri. For a 3 day fishing trip over the weekend, myself and a coupla mates hired the 6.5m boat "Bulowayo Boy" from Murchison boat hire. Good stable hire boat, and lovely people to deal with, are the lasting good memories of the trip.
On the first day out, we went circa 15nm North, and scored a coupla small red throats and pinkies. The wind picked up about lunchtime, and this was forcast so wasn't unexpected. Early arvo saw us calling for a return to base as the conditions were continuing to deteriorate. With a decent seabreeze, and swell of 2 meters saw us with a slowish return journey. About 15mins into our return trip, a call came over the radio if anyone was in the vicinity of a North West direction from the river mouth. It was the Kalbarri VMR crew.
We answered, and received the reply that a 4m dighy with 4 people onboard was overdue. We altered course and headed further out to their radio'd position, but couldn't find them. After ½ hr of looking fruitlessly for them in their supposed fishing position, we decided to head home along a route close to the shoreline to make sure we had the greatest chance of seeing them if they were in trouble. We were calling in regularly with VMR, to see if they had returned safely.
A km or so North of the rivermouth, we saw what we all dreaded. An upturned dinghy on the reef, debris floating and being smashed against the reef by the wind and waves. One bloke was sitting dazed on the reef near the dinghy. Another was lying prone on the reef and unmoving. He too eventually sat up as we came as close as we dared to the reef. These were the lucky ones.
As we circled the area, we saw another bloke in the wash, and he was dumped onto the reef by the swell. Unfortunately he was deceased. We hung around searching for the other 1, in constant contact with VMR keeping them abreast of what was happening. Eventually, SES vollies, local crayboats, jetski's, police and others arrived at the scene, and they took over. We had been hanging around as close as we could to the rocks without putting ourselves in danger just to keep the blokes on the reef re-assured, and trying to find the other fisherman and also collecting the debris from the water.
The upshot of it all was 1 dead fisherman found on the day, but another still missing. We searched over the next 2 days for the missing person, to no avail. I heard tell that 6 weeks after the accident, a foot was found and thats all.
The Kalbarri SES vollies were absolutely fantastic throughout! cant speak highly enough of their quality of people, service and commitment!
All in all, a nightmare of a trip, but nowhere near as bad for us as the others.
Some salient lessons were learnt tho, now that I've got my own boat!. Always log on/ log off with VMR. always state where you're going and an eta, etc. And dont go out in an open dinghy with 4 people, miles out to sea, with a decent seabreeze forecast!

.10mm 30lb berkley whiplash, .10mm 6lb rovex, .20mm 10lb suffix?
Submitted by Jamos Damokos on Fri, 2011-08-12 12:55Hey all
Just bought a daiwa caldia 2000 and a liberty club egi rod, i know a shallow spool model 2004 would have been a better option but couldnt find one for the same price, my dilema now is i would prefer a braid less than .15mm, berkley whiplash is .10mm at 30lb... rovex goes .10mm at 6lb and some suffix i was looking at was .20mm at 10lb, im using 8lb powerpro (claimed .14mm) on a stradic 1000 but would prefer something a bit softer. The caldia should fit 150M of .20mm, im leaning towards the whiplash, any thoughts? So many braids these days its getting painful figuring out what to use.

Couple of Days Fishing in the SW
Submitted by Seaquest on Fri, 2011-08-12 11:18With the great weather we have had in the past couple of days it was decided to make the most of it. Met up with Lamby out wide on Wednesday and went in the search of a few dhuies. The day started pretty slow with a couple of spots showing good fish but no takers. After searching around for a few hours Matt who was on Lamby's boat managed a to pick up a nice dhuie on a Fanky metal. After a couple more hours of not much Lamby decided to make his way home and we went and tried a few more spots further west. Finally found a few fish that were hungry. Dave and I both managed to hook up onto good fish. I got busted off and Dave boated a nice dhuie which was caught on a McArthy 7".

After a couple more drifts with no luck it was decied to head for home and try a sambo spot on the way. The sambo spot looked very fishy on the sounder but the fish were on the bottom which was strange. Dave decided to send a FCL Labo down and worked it slowly and I sent down a Sea Rocks knife jig and worked it fast. Dave hooked up and got busted off not long after on a good fish. We were both thinking a sambo but next drop proved us wrong. Dave hooked up again and after a good fight pulled in a dhuie. Managed to catch a couple more dhuies before we headed for home. Looks like my sambo spot had been overtaken by dhuies. Can't complain with that.

Day two we decided to head back to where we found the dhuys the day before. Tried a few old spots on the way out and scored a nice pinkie on the old fav 7" McArthy red mullet.

Arrived at the 'sambo' spot to find it looking very fishy again. Dave hooked up first and pulled in a dhuie, meanwhile I had hooked up to something very solid. After trying to get this fish off the bottom for quite some time we were both starting to think I had hooked a sambo. After a few more minutes it started to come off the bottom, but every now and then did some blistering runs. After a nervous battle it slowly started to drift away from the boat and we both knew then it was a dhuie. Sure enough it was and a cracking fish too. A new PB for me of 18.5kgs. Was caught on a McArthy 7" pink/pearl using 20lb line on a Posiedon Spin Jerker PSPJ603L and a Certate 3000.

After catching and releasing a few more dhuies of various sizes we decided to try find a few sambos. Headed south to a ledge that goes from 25m to 40m. Sure enough the sambos and ambers were there harassing the baitfish. The next couple of hours were spent stretching the arms and back on some average size fish.

After both of us were beat we headed home to clean the two days efforts of fish. Ended up with 18kg of fillets for the two days. Got to be happy with that.

Rigging techniques for butterfly jigs
Submitted by dkonig82 on Thu, 2011-08-11 20:18Hey
I am keen to hear people's thoughts on the different ways of rigging butterfly jigs, particularly Caprice, Hooker, Ima Ro etc for targetting demersals/reef dwellers.
The twin assist on the top seems popular, though I notice that jigs like the Fanky come with the double hook & squid combo on the slotted mount on the bottom. Have also seen people combining both these methods, though most pics I have seen of Caprice's run the top assist, rather than the double on the bottom as with the Fanky.
Any input appreciated!
Dan

What does the Almanac say?
Submitted by UncutTriggerInWA on Thu, 2011-08-11 20:12LB fished hard yeterday morning from before daylight. Poppers and baitcasting in very good territory. Nothing! Went again this arvo and again everything seemed to be right. I tossed fresh Mullies for 4 hours. Again, nothing.
What does the almanac say? Are they busy breeding? I have heard reports that purist palegic fishos are blaming it on the water. Wassup Doc?
Let's not fill this discussion with non-LB heroics. What's happening in the LB world?

Chart Numbering??
Submitted by One Eyed Phil on Thu, 2011-08-11 16:45I'm trying to read a map/chart book and the figures for the ocean have me baffled. The book "Fish Finder" must have an explanation in it but I cannot find it
I am not a boatie so have no knowledge of marine naviigation. So I had a look at some examples of charts on the net and they do not match what is in the book.
Instead of having a single number (depth I assume), they have a number with a 'subscript' number or letter.
I don't know if I can insert subscripts here but the second number or letter is one.
Eg, 4g, 62, 95 etc
Can anyone enlighten me please
Phil

whats the greatest capture youve ever made or seen!!
Submitted by Ryan C on Thu, 2011-08-11 14:52hi guys i was thinking recently about the most memorable catches i've made in my life or fish that i've seen others catch , that were either caught on way too light gear or in gnarly terrain or just catching a certain species in shallow water where it should not have been, the best i've ever done was off koks island in carnarvon a 33kg spaniard on a floater on a stella 4000 with 300m of 20lb braid , that fish took me to the bottom of the spool in the first run and i held the spool with less than 10m left then after fighting the fish for 10 minutes and getting most of the line back it took off again and took me to the backing knot and it held!!! definately my all time best capture!, the best i have seen was my mate Ray catching a 17kg dhu on our first night fishing excursion near garden island , the only fish we caught for the night was his 17kg dhu in 7m of water on a bluebait and very light tackle it was awesome. cheers

Safcol switches to sustainable canned tuna
Submitted by bod on Thu, 2011-08-11 01:26Australians will soon be able to buy sustainable canned tuna in supermarkets, which reduces the hidden cost of high-yield fishing techniques.
Safcol has become the first major Australian brand to switch from aggregation and purse seine fishing methods to the environmentally friendly pole and line fishing.
The new product, launched in Sydney, is yet to hit stores but Greenpeace has applauded the switch as a step towards the end of destructive fishing practices.
Greenpeace Asia Pacific head of oceans Lagi Toribau said it was up to consumers to drive demand for sustainably fished tuna.
"The market is now the carrot that's going to change everything," he said.
"If the market demands sustainability, the industry, the political circle have no reason to not agree to it because at the end of the day the products end up in the market."
Canned tuna is Australia's top-selling seafood product, but Greenpeace said current fishing practices were endangering several species of tuna and causing the unnecessary killing of sharks and turtles.
Greenpeace is pushing for a ban on fish aggregation devices (FADs) that attract fish to a central point to be collected by large nets, and for tuna companies to implement sustainability policies.
Mr Toribau said the nets used by purse seine fishing could be the size of two city blocks.
Safcol will meet with Woolworths and Coles next week to discuss getting the new tuna product on the shelves.
Greenpeace has also issued its third canned tuna guide, which ranks tuna brands on their sustainability credentials.
Safcol, which was previously at the bottom of the 10-brand ranking, is now the second-best tuna for sustainability on the market.
Fish 4 Ever, which is available at some IGA stores and health food stores is the top-ranked tuna on the market for sustainability. Fish 4 Ever co-founder Belinda Lawlor said there was resistance from major supermarkets to stock the brand because of its high price point.
Greenpeace oceans campaigner Nathaniel Pelle said Fish 4 Ever was a market leader.
The latest Greenpeace tuna guide can be found on the Greenpeace website greenpeace.org.au.

Fishing spot clean up day
Submitted by ruste13 on Wed, 2011-08-10 19:46Hey Fella's,
Just wanted to let everyone know that there are rumours of another clean up day being organized for sometime in spring.
We have had two in the last two years and this will be the third. There have been members from Wangler, Fishwrecked and Hotbite at all the previous clean-ups and they have been a huge success
The last two have been at ASI groyne and North Mole and I am hoping that the next one will be north of the river.
Hopefully this will be a multi forum clean up as our local fishing spots are for everyone to enjoy no matter what forum you post on or what magazine you read.
I really hope this one gets a lot of support from all West Australian Fisherman and is a day we can all be proud of!!!
More details will follow.
Cheers Russ

Exmouth Campsites
Submitted by jdavies_99 on Wed, 2011-08-10 15:14Hi Guys,
Heading up to Exmouth in a few weeks and was wondering about decent campsites to stay.
In the past we have always stayed at Ningaloo station which is really nice and a great place however the drive off the highway to the campsite towing a boat takes about an hour and a half which when you are coming from Perth makes the journey that little bit too hard.
Can anyone suggest any places to camp in the area. Really am chasing somewhere not to far off the beaten track and great to stay.
We are completely self sufficient campers and dont need any ammeneties.
Also this is the first time we are going to be taking a reasonably big boat so would be very interested in hearing any suggestions on locations or places to fish/spearfish. Someone mentioned to me that inside the gulf is the way to go??

Sounder/plotter advice
Submitted by Outlaw II on Wed, 2011-08-10 11:49
Gday all looking at buying a sounder/plotter combo but am looking for advice as to whether or not i should buy two seperate untis instead.
Currently I am looking at either the huumminbird 798 ci with side scan ot the 858.
The other thing i want to know is what are peoples experiences with buying from US and where did you get it from. Ive come across a few sites that are about 4-500 dollars cheaper than in australia. This even includes shipping and local maps. The only downside is some of the units come in imperial units but for the money saved i can put up with that..
