Trip up to the Great Barrier Reef
Submitted by GusG on Mon, 2009-10-19 06:25Weekend before last I was lucky enough to be invited onto the boss' boat moored just off Lizard Is in the Great Barrier Reef. We flew to Cairns then got a transfer to the island. We were staying on the mothership and the boss was driving up in his game fishing boat. Unfortunately he didn't get there until the afternoon before we left so we didnt get to go out and chase marlin. Now is BIG marlin season up there.
Not to matter we still got to out on his 'tenders' and chase fish. We managed to pick up some spanish and scaly mackerel, GTs, barracuda, coral trout and other reef fish. What a great trip, the crew on board treated us like kings and we got to eat some of our catch.
The scaly macks were going to be used by the boss to troll dead baits for marlin so hopefully he will get one on the baits I caught for him and give mea big fat bonus Believe me going up there for 4 days was more than bonus enough! What a great trip. Cant wait to get invited again (I hope ).
I guess I should get off my arse and do some work instead of being on this website all day.
I also got to go swimming with a manta ray which was bloody awesome and we got to hand feed some sharks and GTs off the back of the boat. What an amazing show these fish put on. Unfortunately we were moored in a green zone so couldnt drop a lure over the side of the mother ship and get stuck into the GTs. There were some massive ones there. Everytime a GT would score one of the fish frames a nasty big whaler would come out of the depths, chase it around and either get the frame or the GT. We saw quite a few GTs swimming around with chunks missing out of them.

Identifying fish?
Submitted by kackles on Tue, 2009-10-13 23:51Hi there,Anybody know how to identify fish that i have caught? l'm completely new to the game and i don't want to fall foul of the 101111 regulations with the fisheries.
Also, anyone got a clue what fish this is and whether it is edible?
Cheers

Gracetown Sojourn
Submitted by damo6230 on Fri, 2009-10-09 16:04With the weather looking good for a morning fish before the front we decided to head south of the Cape.
First intentions was to launch out of Canal Rocks but upon arriving at the ramp the swell was breaking over the ramp.....not a good option especially if the swell picked up.
A quick conference and we decided to head further south for Gracetown. With me was Mark (Big Red) and the other boat comprised Stoinka and Garry. Garry had kindly offered a few gps marks so who could resist......
Gractown looked calm as we desended onto the ramp. A quick launch and a quick trip through the reef and we were out in the big blue. Pointed North and headed up the coast......
The conditions were sweet with a rolling swell but not much wind. First time for Mark in my boat so plenty of pressure to put him onto some quality fish. Not long after he abandoned his jig for bait he landed a nice little Dhuie so pretty happy.
Stoinka landed one not long before us so things looked promising.
Well plenty of fish on the sounder but not much action regardless of jig, soft plastic, or bait. However Mark did land a nice Queenie which fell to snapback on a paternosta rig.......
At one stage a couple of whales came over for a look and hung around for a while.....awesome stuff.
Back to the Ramp midday and a sweet day on the water.
Cheers Stonika and Garry for the hospitality.

sidchrome jigs
Submitted by matt_low on Sun, 2009-10-04 21:39hi im matt nd i am the deckie on the seasport and tackle charter boat in jurien bay.
a few of you guys may know my skipper craige white,
me and whitey have been getting a little bored bottom bouncing and we got right in to jigging and the sambos are going troppo. me an dwhitey had a plan to jig a sidchrome spanner, just as a bit of a novlety thing. well it turned out to be a bit more successful than first thought. the un conventional jig turned out to produce a few sambos but just the one major wieghing in at about 20kg
so there you go no need for the flashy colours a simple dull spanner dose the job

exmouth 2009
Submitted by Bigshaun on Sat, 2009-10-03 21:23Went to exmouth for a week in september this year. Just got back
we were chasing some decent fish. hopefully some red emporer, some blue bone, spangeld emporer and good fish like them.
after a weeks fishing up there and not any real decent fish and a hell of alot of miles we thought of a new catch frase for exmouth for anglers going up there with no waypoints just looking for some good fish.
"EXMOUTH! ALOT OF MILES FOR F*#^ ALL "
may not be that for all fishermen
but as much as i love it up there
and want to give it another try.
that was out moto for 2009
hope its better next time :)

Gascoyne Mullas
Submitted by Ben Derecki on Wed, 2009-09-30 09:15Had one of the most epic fishings sessions of my life over the long weekend. Shot up to Shark Bay with a couple of mates on Thursday night and fished Friday to Sunday before getting back Monday night.
The fishing overall was good, all of it was done launching from Monkey Mia - plenty of pinks and a few blacks and baldies, but we had to cover a lot of ground to find them. The stand out were the mulloway though.
Friday night we hit a spot south of Monkey and after burleying up for 1/2 hour the mullas came on. Over the next two hours between two boats we got onto fifteen of them, all were around the size in the pics. It was insane. We kept a couple and released the rest. The water we were in was quite shallow, less than 6m, so we figured the release wouldn't have an impact on their health
Water was like this for two of the three days.
The pinkies were hungry, got a load on plastics too.
But this is where all the action was - sorry about the quality of a couple of the pics, bit of blood there in a couple
It was well worth the 1,700km round trip

good day out
Submitted by Luke R on Thu, 2009-08-27 20:53hey all
headed out yesterday, first time in ages that we have finally had some goof weather. headed straight to the derwent had a jig resulting in one pinky, decided to head out deep to one of my deep spots and see if there was much around, with a little look around some fish started to show, so out went the sea anchor and down went the lines, whilst the lines where plumeting to the bottom we had 4 dollies come out of nowhere and started circling the boat, within a second we both had a double hook up on dollies, at the same time having to rods out in 300mts of water, trying to not get tangled whilst fighting dollies is hard work believe me, after landing them we decided to do another proper drift over my spot, next drift came and this time we where greeted by a big pod of dolphins free swiming around the boat, after dazing off to the amazing creatures before i new it i was hooked up big time, big head shakes and very hard to turn off the bottom it kept me wondering what the hell i had hooked, 15 mins later popped up a beauty 32kg harpuka, after that i headed into a few shallower spots, hooked into a 20kg grey band and jigged another that would have gone maybe 8kgs. all in all it was a great day out with some much needed weather.
cheers
luke
