27 meg radios
There has been an email sent out to all the Volunteer Sea Rescue groups informing us of the intention of not advertising the coverage coverage of 27meg radios in their information for listeners. This is the start of getting all boaters to gradually turn to VHS radios. This at the moment is mainly in the metro area as most far northern and southern groups have only a few visiting vessels logging on with 27 meg
Here in Carnarvon we would be lucky to get 4-5 a year with the exception of Carnarfin fishing competition where there is a coupe of regulars from down south who refuse to take the hint that it is for their safety not to spend a few dollars, after all when they spend thousands on travel up here, accommodation , entry fees , bait and fuel and piss.
So when buying a new radio as a replacement or fitting out a boat for the first time please consider going the extra bit and putting a VHF in

Sea Rescue is not responsible for the issuing of licences though most of the groups run courses. Its easier now with the shortened recreation one rather than the full one including HF.
Then again, I've never heard of anyone being pinged for using one without hold a licence.

In the remote NW an HF radio is a must
At least you have a chance of being heard using skip whereas VHF very unlikely unless you get tropospheric ducting

a sat phone would be more practical than a HF on a trailer boat.
Having said that, there are not many areas in the NW that a distress call on VHF or DSC wouldn't pick up a boat or shore station, and if you are operating in such an area you'd be expected to be prepared in other ways, such as notifying a friend/caravan park/station/community by phone of your movements-or I imagine to any VMR via a phone.
While they couldn't maybe search for you they certainly could raise the alarm.
