3 lucky divers

heard today on the radio about 3 divers rescued out near rotto after being swept away from their boat by a strong current. luckily the police boat just happened to be in the right place at the right time. just goes to show how dangerous it can be out there for either experienced or new divers

Funny Story

Tue, 2010-01-05 03:16

Funny story,it just about happened to a guy at work at Rotto a couple of months ago. Buddy dived in, he was just about to make the plunge...and his mate was half way to Africa.  Pulled his anchor, and went to pick him up, by then he was a few hundred metres away.  Gave him a big wake up call

Was at West End.  One of the guys was so knackered that he couldn't swim anymore - very lucky.  Page 27 todays paper.

A good reason to remember to

A good reason to remember to always dive into the current or wind. That way you either get a lazy fin back underwater, or just inflate the BCD and get blown back to the boat with minimal fuss.

Advise Sea Rescue

Tue, 2010-01-05 08:59

This is one of the reasons we advise divers to let the local sea rescue group know where you are diving and what time you expect to be back at the boat. If we don not hear from them within 5 minutes of the return time we send out a rescue vessel to investigate. Would have saved them swimming for 2 hours.

Had an incident many years ago were a vessel was found on the beach at Quinns with dive flag. Two diver were located 8pm that night of burns rocks. They had been diving 4nm west of Ocean Reef. Anchor line broke and they had been in the water for 8 hours.

I heard that was just so sea rescue could find out where you were diving for crays ;)

We usually log on when in Alfreed's boat for that reason.

I know it not always

Tue, 2010-01-05 12:54

I know it not always possible, but its good practice to bring along a non-diving mate, who can sit up top, minding things, maybe have a fish while the others dive.

West end is shocking, a lot

Wed, 2010-01-06 12:02

West end is shocking, a lot of people dont realise how strong the currents are there. I have had a mate drop all his gear as he couldn't make it back to the boat, they retrieved his tank/jacket but lost everything else.
