3 Mile swoffas

I am new to the forum and recently got a tinny and mainly fish the 3 mile around Hillarys and Ocean Reef with a fly rod. I have noted some other part time swoffas on here and was wondering if there were other’s that waive the fly around on the 3 mile reef and what has been your experience and success or failure. As for me I have not had that much success mainly some reef fish but I am enjoying the challenge and navigating around the 3 mile.

Hope to hear from some of the other swoffas out there.

I am, as I've said, merely competent. But in an age of incompetence, that makes me extraordinary.

Fly fishing the 3mile

Thu, 2013-01-24 11:11

Hey mate, I've fly fished since I was under 10yrs old, haven't done to much on the 3mile in the last couple yrs but for a few yrs leading up to then I did a fair bit out of Hilary's, mostly targeting sambos as they are the best fight out there on fly, was mostly using 10/11/12wt outfits but at times dropping to 8/9wts for the snapper coming up the burley trails.

I found using a stripper line gave me best success as you get to fish what ever depth you choose longer, I used to find a good spot , burley up before sun up/down and cast through the trail, good thing about the 3 mile is you never know what you will hook up to, my old man got 2 15kgish Mack's in  a quick 2hrs session the yr before last , and the amount of pinkies we have taken up to 10kgs , only a couple 65cm dhuies but a lot of sambos ranging from rats upto 25+kg.

We put a lot of time into it before it paid off o stick with it and you will get results, pm me if you. Want to know anything else

Great reply Mate, much appreciated. You give me hope! I have been doing similar but I've been burlying with catfood and pallets. I bought trasnom burley pot and will start bulreying with mullies and hopefully get some better results. I use a 7 for if skippy turn up and 10wt (my biggest rod) for bigger stuff. I was told a 10wt will be a bit light for the sambos. What has been your experience? What sort of a water dept were you mostly sticking to and did you sound out fish before anchoring or did you focus more on structure for anchoring. Also wondering where on the 3 mile did you focus behind the breakers little island etc. or the last reef before it drops to 20m? Apreciate the advice.
