Bum sniffers

Sun, 2010-05-02 22:27

If the bum sniffing game is so good why are a couple of players at the highest level changing codes to Aussie rules???

One has been signed for the new Gold coast side and the other has been offered a squillion dollars to go to West Sydney.

They're only playing for cash

I guess if someone was gonna pay you more to do something that requires less skill you would do it to!!

Cash!!

Sun, 2010-05-02 22:38

If they didn't see the talent in them do you think they would offer them a squillion dollars to change from a game where you have to chuck the ball backwards to go forward.

Don't they

Sun, 2010-05-02 22:42

Kick, throw, bounce, roll and whatever else they do in AFL in all directions to go forward?

I don't think that you would find NRL teams trying to poach AFL players!!!

Western Reds ring a bell?

Mon, 2010-05-03 08:19

tried and failed. Not enough people in Perth interested in NRL. In fact, the NRL barely struggles to get 15,000 fans to a normal home and away game in it's heartland of NSW.

And you are basing it on a winning a logie? Goodness me.......

Logie winning sport, wow that just makes me want to run out and buy a rubgy guernsey right now. Wink  As correctly pointed out, look at the numbers (supporters)  at an AFL Subi game and do the figures and for the other grounds across this country. One word for you trousersnake - minority.

It's not a case of blaming the fans

Mon, 2010-05-03 15:11

It's a case of which code has more support in the west particularly and it is as simple as that. It also will be very interesting to see what happens when the greater western Sydney AFL team gets on board, I'm thinking it's going to give the rugby a bit more heartburn.

Come on guys... whose game

Mon, 2010-05-03 08:43

is truly played internationally?

You can't tell me that GAYFL is such a great game. Sure, they are fit, and good at their chosen sport, but come on.... get a penalty for tackling too hard, get a penalty for making contact, and above all.... you've got four sticks to kick at - is that because it is too hard to get it through one set? Don't start me on the rest of the silly little rules...

There will never be a true competition here in WA as long as there is no support from the media, in all aspects - be it radio, television, or the papers. You ask about the Western Reds? True, they folded for many reasons. How many of you know that the Reds has now started a junior academy playing in the Under 18 SG Ball Cup against the eastern states? The plan is to develop the younger kids (i.e. 12 - 16) and then if they make they grade have them step up for the SG Ball. These kids are the future Western Australian NRL team - and yes - they are still planning on having an NRL team here within the next 3 years.

How come I am so passionate about it? I have a 14 year old son, who in his first year of playing represented WA in the State Under 12's national Competition. This year he has been selected in the State Under 15's squad to travel to Canberra and take part in a National Competition, and then to the AIS at the end of this year.

Me? yes, I am die hard rugby (both codes - having played school boy rugby league and then many years playing union).

Pass the hot potatoe is exactly that - a girls game played by prima donna's.

BRING BACK THE BIFF

Alright, I don't normally

Mon, 2010-05-03 10:24

Alright, I don't normally get lured into these sort of posts but the tides are right and your bait looks good so I'm biting....
I work with a lot of east coast guys so we have this argument all the time. Both sports require great fitness and endurance so we'll say they're even there. The skill set to play Aussie Rules is greater than rugby league though. In league you only need 2 skills, passing/catching and tackling (only 1 guy needs to know how to kick straight and he gets a few minutes to line this up with no pressure), and all opposition pressure comes from a area of around say 120 to 150 degrees infront of the player and all within his vision. Aussie Rules you need to have excellent skills for kicking/marking, handballing and tackling and be equally good on both sides of the body. Pressure here comes from 360 degrees around, often unsighted.
As for the silly rules, I have to admit AFL has put some poxy ones in place lately but it's still a bloody skillfull sport and is really the only Australia wide popular and successful domestic team sport. NRL is only popular on the east coast (even if 15k at a game is a good crowd), NBL, well....., domestic cricket struggles for crowds, A-League has a passionate following but lacks mainstream support, and I won't mention womens sports like netball because they play by different rules.

If you want to talk truely international sport, I reckon the only team sports that come close are soccer and maybe basketball. Otherwise it's individual sport like golf and tennis.

Well I just threw the hook so I'm off.....maybe next time!

Union or League

Mon, 2010-05-03 12:35

Is fine by me. I get to as many Force games as I can but tha season is so short due to National commitments and international travelling.  I think we get maybe 7 Force home games a year.   In almost 7 years of being here I have never been to a Eagles or Dockers game.  I have been to a dozen Force games easily and they have only been around a few years. I consider myself a big sport dude!  I tried to get into hot potato when I first arrived even was a Dockers fan to give myself a team to cheer for.    But after watching games on tv and a failure to see a point on so many levels.  I have decided that we need a real sport in W.A. (besides fishing).   I enjoy tha cricket cause it's great for drinking beer all day and having something to watch. NBL is a joke and I give em props for trying but it just doesn't compare to NBA which maybe being Canadian I am bias.    Never been a huge fan of soccer it's a bit to soft for me and even though it would be a cardio challenge to play for 90minutes I like tha biffo!!!

Lucky Tim you are forgetting about tha drop goal in Rugby.   They are very much under pressure to get tha kick off and only have one set of uprights to get it through. They are not given a point for trying!!!

GAYFL is exactly that.  If we get a NRL team over here you can bet I'll be a season ticket holder.

I am Union through and

Mon, 2010-05-03 13:30

I am Union through and through but I do love watching AFL! I often ponder how we would dominate given the skill of our AFL athletes. Dayne Beams in fullback, Juddy at fly half and Big Nick Nat as a steam rolling line carving number 8... oh the possibilities. Would certainly shut up my kiwi mates and their irritable vowel syndrome. Trousersnake do you yourself a massive favour and go watch an AFL game live, it's awesome and gives you a massive appreciation for the game. At least go see the Dockers, never thought I would ever say that but I am still crying into my beer over the derby lossCry

I'm going

Mon, 2010-05-03 14:00

Wests Tigers this year.   Tha last couple of years I was backing North Queensland but tha signing of Willie Mason this year was tha final nail in tha Cowboys coffin.   I think Wests are a underdog in comparison to yer Sea Eagles Colin.  With tha Storm out tho and Bulldogs strugglin.   Tigers could have pulled off tha signing of tha year with Loti!!!

Lamby heaps of people have suggested goin to a live game.  I'm not against going, I guess it would have to be a free ticket though.LOL

Bring on tha Kiwis on Friday GO THA KANGAROOS!!!!

Good Point Ian

Mon, 2010-05-03 14:02

I had a quick rummage through the memory and came up with some fine candidates for your comment:

David Campese - AM

John Eales - AM, Bachelor of Arts w.- double major in psychology, Financial Review columnist, speaker

Peter Fitzsimons - Author, columnist, speaker

Mal Meninga - AM

Going to spend a few minutes looking around to see what I can find on some of those pretty boy intelligent AFL players..... I am sure it will be a quick search.

hehehehehe

Good point Ian?

Mon, 2010-05-03 14:26

I thought Campese and Eales and Fitzsimmons were Union players Craig - i know Maninga was League - while you are searching Google for educated AFL players ( there are so many they only list Phd's ) check Wikopedia for all the naughty goings on by NRL players ( and teams ) - it reads like a police blotter from the Cronulla riots - assault, manslaughter, public defecation, - eheheh - there are enough offenders to man a battalion. And i will not listen to any slanderous comments that Fev is a bit thick - he's smarter than Mark Jackson!

Very True Ian

Mon, 2010-05-03 14:34

But since the codes are slagged off as one by such one eyed supporters it is just easier to to lump them both together.

And you are correct. Far be it for me to say that Fev is not a fine upstanding member of the community, dare I suggest anything about Ben?

We could be here forever, and the list that I am finding on google regarding AFL players and their Phd's is simply awe inspiring. The search is taking me longer than I thought. Heaven forbid this ex league player with his IQ under 50 would know where to look.

lol

Let's face it

Craig, all codes have their share of twats and AFL is behind the 8 ball in it's public face with that gentleman and scholar Sam Newman fronting the footy show. Thank god no one is even suggesting those huggers and tonguers from soccer even rate a guernsey.

Yer gonna get tha bad dudes no matter what code

Mon, 2010-05-03 14:45

If I was gonna hang out with an AFL player it would have to be Fevola.   I don't care what his IQ is if tha accomplished sheet reads Bingle!!  Still trying to figure how soft cock Micheal Clarke ended up it that situation.

Origin

Mon, 2010-05-03 20:06

When you look at the make up of bum sniffer sides how come there are a huge number of maori, Samoan,Fijian, Tongan, Cook islanders in comparisan to Aussies.

The record attendance for a rugby game is 107.500 for the 1999 grand final, Afl's is 123.000 between Collingwood and Carlton who usually get around 90.000+ for regular games, what rugby match does that. To my knowledge even the exhibition games like State of Origin doesn't even match it.
