Abroholos must haves??
Submitted by Mitch88 on Fri, 2016-03-04 16:58
Heading to abrohlos island late march pending weather. Will be my first time and heading over with two other boats.
So to all you abrohlos gurus what are the boat must haves?
From reading Rob H and Paul G posts it seems tarp for wind block, star picket for a solid beach mooring, plenty of boat shade is a must.
Anything else you can recommened?
Regards Mitch

I just jump on a public
I just jump on a public mooring. No mucking around with stern anchors. Just take everything you will need to survive and be self sufficient on the boat for a couple of days.
Nice for deck room if you are able to get the swags up on top and out of the way for daytime as well.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

Public moorings-handy but be
Public moorings-handy but be aware that some are in sanctuary areas.

My advise would be don't go
My advise would be don't go to far out best fishing is close to the breakers/island and if you see bait throw a lure at it you never now what's hanging around them from xl baldies, kingies to yft every bait ball was different

Public Moorings
Pending on boat size as to whether i use a public mooring or not.
If I am in the big boat (42ft) I use the public moorings as they are secure and reasonable location.
If I am in the small boat (23ft) I much prefer to anchor as I can get much closer to the protection of an island and get a better night sleep if it blows up.
Late March will mean you will get alot of the Easter crew so getting a vacant public mooring might be a bit of a challenge.
Take plenty of terminal tackle and a copy of the recfish rules as guarenteed you will get stopped by fisheries out there this time of the year - Remember fillets with skin on, longer then 30cm, marked on who they belong to.
Lastly dont forget to get your written authorisation from fisheries to head over.

None of them are accurate
None of them are accurate for long range forecast, i just use the usual seabreeze, willyweather and BOM meteye. I obsess over the weather before we head over and it usually changes 20 times in the week before. The last 2 years i have to had to cancel the trip 3 times before we get a window of weather. Last year i got caught out and it changed for the worse and had to punch back into a 25-30knot NE which took 5 hours to get back (took 1.75 hrs to get across) the whole time the deckie was shitting himself :)

All long range forecasts are
All long range forecasts are a guess, and most just continue the trend at 4 days.
Experiment by printing out the long range forecasts, wait 5 days and print it again then compare.
NE is absolutely the worst to head home from Sthn group, even a 10 knot or an hour after its glassed off its still shit.
