Advice on battery ventilation

Guys, looking at hooking up a third battery in the boat for running a fridge etc.

The question is - do sealed lead acid batteries still need ventilation ?

I am looking at putting the 3rd battery in the cabin, under the floor below the helm in a space about 500mm sq.

Dont really want to put a third battery down the stern, could do with some extra weight up front anyhoo.

The length of wire from battery to VSR controller is about 4 meters, am i asking too much of it or should it be O.K. ?

 Cheers

im pretty sure the "sealed" batteries still produce gases that need to be vented when they charge ..not really sure how to fix your problem but maybe one of the gel batteries might do the trick ?? i think youd really want to chat to a battery expert, maybe a auto electrician

No Ventilation Required I Reckon.

I would have thought the sealed batteries are exactly that.  I don't see how they could leak gasses and there for, wouldn't need ventilation.  Where would they leak from?  But like Feral said, I'd be checking with someone who knows.  If it was me, I'd be ringing a battery manufacturer direct.

And as for the length of cable, that won't be a problem.  It just depends on the current draw as to what size cable you will need.  Any half decent auto sparky should be able to help you there.  I think there is a member who's an auto sparky?  Check the latest "What do you do for a crust" thread.  Good Luck

A sealed battery is you best

A sealed battery is you best bet, but even these will vent  hydrogen, if overcharged. Generaly not a problem if used on a smart multi stage charger, but running straight of your vessels electrical system you can run the chance, all be it small, of venting.

Check the running voltage of your vessel. If it doesnt exceed 14.4v you should be ok.
