advice for deepsea reel for my girlfriend

My girlfriend came out deepsea fishing on our boat for the first time today she loved it she caught a number of reef fish ie wrasse ,sargaent baker, parrotfish and Skippy. She hooked two decent fish but as she was using my second best reel with only 30 pound line she got busted off on the reef. She managed 2 land three monster sting rays which really made her work and made her arms back and wrists a little sore. She never gave up though she was determined 2 get a table fish usually I am the one saying one more drift but this time i  didnt have 2 cause she really didnt want 2 leave without a decent fish. Unfortunately 6:30pm came and she was still fish less and we still had 2 travel 30km back 2 the boat ramp. After we cleaned the boat and the few fish we got for the day(6kg duhie, 4kg baldchin, snapper and blackarse) she asked me when we were going again I think she is hooked. She wants a new or second hand  overhead reel and rod for fishing deep I use a shimano TLD25 and she has used that but finds it hard 2 wind it up all day long and its hard enough me winding my line up 2 check the bait let alone winding hers and mine up. Can anyone recommend  a reel that would suit her needs i was thinking the 2 speed TLD anyone know how much they retail for. Also i have seen some old guys on a fishing charter with a metal bracket that hooks under your left hand 2 stop the overhead twisting in your hand while winding has anyone seen these before or know where to purchase them. Any advice is helpfull and appreciated. Ihope u all have a happy and safe long weekend.

TLD

I wouldnt bother with the TLD's for bottom bouncing inside 100m and the 2 speed will probably be a worse option as it feels like your winding forever.

Something like a saltist 30 would be heaps better because of its smaller size she wont notice it wanting to twist in her hands as much unlike the bigger TLD's. It will also handle heavier braids no problem.

Reels!

The TLD30 is a great reel and the low ratio makes it easier to wind up a big fish but yes as Tim mentioned its slow. I use 2 speed reels all the time and rate them highly. I'd rather wind slower & easier personally.

The other option as Tim also mentioned is the Daiwa Saltist, a very good reel indeed!

I use a 9" alvey Reel & game rod

Sun, 2009-04-26 12:10

30lb pre-stretched nylon 500 metres, find it very good rod for me t use, can sit on the large esky we have in the boat and put the rod between my legs (now now fellas) and wind up a good fish on it, doesn't twist or flop around and my arms don't get sore.  Wound up a 10kg dhuie a few years ago and a good size baldie.  Don't use it a lot mainly when my finger gets sore holding the line on the winch, with 2lb sinker on it, even with my bike tyre sheild on my finger.

If you use some driftbaits

Sun, 2009-04-26 18:02

If you use some driftbaits she'll only have to wind up 4oz Wink

Some people keep using 24oz sinkers all day instead of changing them as needed, so if you're using the lightest sinkers you need, it'll certainly be a lot easier on your arms. Some rods and reels are a lot lighter and hence a lot easier to hold all day, so might be worth trying to find something that doesnt weigh a kilo. Also, make sure your drag is set right, as 30lb can still handle good sized fish without getting pinged but only if the drags set right (50lb is a safer bet, but less fun :p).

Saltists are good, and they even come in levelwind now which would be a lot easier on your gf (and the levelwind 30 is lighter than the 30t/th's, though about the same as the impossible to find 30H's). Though the LW's arent the lower gear ratio afaik.

Otherwise, if she doesnt like winding, theres two options: get a electric reel, or tell her to toughen up, lol Laughing

Cheers for  all the advice might try the alvey i won one in the swanfish this year was going 2 sell it but might put some braid on it for her. Does the braid go on the alvey ok. And yes i would tell her to harden up but as she bought the new boat for me i dont think she would like that comment.Laughing

Just asked Bob and the braid/fireline will be excellent

Mon, 2009-04-27 09:50

for the alvey as if you put nylon on and not pre-stretched your girlfriend could be in all sorts of problems especially if she gets snagged or big fish on.  The reason Bob put on the pre-stretched as its approved by ANSA and if he wants to go in the competitions at the Club with the sports fishing group its okay to use. Also a good trace say 80lb trace on 30lb braid (no more.)  When not in use (Alvey) loosen your drag othewise your washers will compress and won't release and run, thats what Bob's found out with the alvey, hope this helps.

Bottom Reel

Mon, 2009-04-27 20:11

Mate i would buy the best reel you can afford, so when your missus doesn't come fishing you can use it.

PS I have a couple of TLD25's- Had one for 12 years fantastic reel for the price, maybe just get a larger handle to make it easier to wind in the big ones
