Advice - Late model Pajero as tow vehicle
Submitted by Muppet on Sat, 2016-04-02 23:11
Hi all, chasing advice from any late model diesel Pajero owners.
How do they perform as a tow vehicle, larger, heavier boats around 3 ton.
i am considering my options at the moment and whilst I would love a 200 series cruiser, prices for near new are
seemingly getting unrealistiic.
Any bad reports for the mitzis ?

What are you towing with
What are you towing with it? If its the 8100 cat in your profile your well over 3T and you will have your hands full trying to pull it with a paj. A 200 with its longer wheelbase, higher gvm, higher tow capacity, bigger fuel tanks, bigger motor and gearbox would be a much safer combo! You can pick up the 2012 update 200 for a pretty decent price!

Your patriot would be well
Your patriot would be well over 3 too.
I went through the same dilemma last year. In the end the 200 was the only real option for me.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

underrated
Pajero's are the most underrated 4wd. My old gen 2 handled a 2t boat with comfort.
The new diesels have a good motor and gearbox however the gen 4's tend to be received as a little 'cheap' inside (well they need to save money somewhere I guess). For a bit more info on the gen 4's towing I would jump onto the vic Pajero club forum for a bit more advice - I'm pretty sure some of the members on there have towed some large loads. I would imagine airbag suspension in the rear would help keep it level when towing and the ifs/irs makes it very stable to drive on road.
I was talking to some guys a couple of years ago towing a 2.2t haines with a new Pajero and they reckoned it pissed it in.

Cheers guys
yep. I know it's cutting close with my boat around the 3 ton mark. Not as heavy as some cats though.
just considering options, but still want the comfort !

i have a 09 diesel Pajero NT
i have a 09 diesel Pajero NT and it towed my old 2T boat well...all the way from south Australia.
But in your case, no good, after 2.5T the max towball weight drops significantly, so in reality 2.5T is really it's maximum capacity.

3 tonne though is heavier than the car.
You really need a v8 cruiser or f250

If you tow with the turbo
If you tow with the turbo diesel paj be sure to never let it go into overdrive, used to love my Paj, but on the second gearbox I sold it and got a cruiser. Best thing I ever did and should have done it 3 4x4's ago.
Towing with a Paj, complete fail for me! Boat might have gone a tonne and a bit.
