another few mulloway
Got a few more mulloway over the last couple of weeks. both where caught on 6-8kg rod and a little saltist 30.
first one went 14kg and was caught north metro, was going to release it but had swallowed the hooks and was bleeding bad so he was kept. Ate a fresh tailor fillet. i was fishing on my own so landing it was again difficult but still managed.
next one was caught at E sheds last night and was around 16kg, wasnt weighed or measured as i wanted to release it as fast as possible, took a live scalie.
for those who where wondering i gaffed it in the bottom jaw and lifted it up, took a few photos and climbed down a ladder with him and swam him for a few minutes before he was right to go
nothing better than seeing such a big fish swim free after all the hours put in.
letting this fish go raised a lot of eyebrows and i hope a lot more people realise how important these fish are and that releasing big ones will keep plenty of these fish around for us to enjoy for years to come.
cheers chris..

This fish swam away very
This fish swam away very strong and there is no doubt in my mind that he is completely fine, letting him go is defiantly the highlight of my years fishing, that reel is spooled with 20lb mono with a 40lb leader with just a running sinker and about 1m down to a set of snelled 2/0 hooks.

Just a big enough sinker to
Just a big enough sinker to hold the bottom and stop the livey from moving around, cause I'm only using 20lb mainline and a light rod I have no chance of straightening such small hooks and the small hooks sit so much better in a small livey.

A fair few but what's always
A fair few but what's always interested me is I've never caught one between 50cm to 1m, either get tiny ones fishing for whiting or tailor or big ones over 12kg and I've heard of very few in that size range caught metro as well. This was the first river fish I've caught all my others where ocean fish and there is big difference between river, reef and surf mulloway.

Most do come from Rockwalls
Most do come from Rockwalls as its easier to fish, reliably larger fish ect ect but only caught one true surf one that was a glowing blue colour ( the one in my display pic, when it was landed the colour was unreal until it faded after death) but have seen a few of these blue fish caught. Not all of the photos with rocks are Rockwalls, small groynes at beaches are the backgrounds of a few.
