Any painters here?

hi fellas,

Have a question for any painters here...

I'm going to be painting the doors, door frames, and skirting in my house with a gloss enamel.  I've heard that just white gloss with yellow over time.  Therefore I was going to get a white gloss enamel with a drop of black in it - eg, a white tone.

Will making it any off white eliminate the chance of it yellowing over time?  Or do all gloss enamels yellow?

I know there is the water based aquaenamel though I've used this before and don't really like the finish you get.

cheers

Wayne

Tomcat - thanks for that.  Just to confirm then, regardless of what tint you have in the gloss all the gloss enamels will yellow over time?  Do you know what causes it to yellow?

Have 16 doors to paint and skirting throughout the house so I wanna get it right before starting;)

Is WA white a dulux colour?

cheers

wa white is a solver mix but most paint places do it

its the only white id  paint a ceiling in it covers so well and easy to touch up

ive painted a  fair bit for a living  and ii painted all my extrior timber windows in white enamel 7 years ago and no yellowing yet some has full sun , i only use wattyl id for my enammel so dont be affraid to spend a bit extra  for a quality paint and use a good sealer/under coat

evoriamental factors cause some yellowing like smoking /cooking and some gas heating  and have seen some from sun

Good advice here -

one thing though of ineterst - is that i have been told that the yellowing effect is actually not as pronounced in natural sunlight (would be why there is no yellowing on the exterior timber window frmaes - I'm guessing). It has something to do with the curing agent in the white paint. The other interesting thing is i painted a hallway quite a few years ago and got some yellowing inside 18 months. I repainted the hallway after a large skylight was installed, almost two years ago now, with no sign of the dreaded yellow yet. Cheers

yeah i spoke with a lady at bunnings and she reckons that if you add a tint to pure white enamel it won't yellow - though reading this it seems it doesn't matter if the tint is in it or not.  Perhaps the tint just delays it some what...

bit of a hijack, just painted a few rooms today with acrylic.  The smell tonight makes the house almost unlivable.  Does anyone have any hints on how to get rid of the smell quickly or is it just opening doors and windows and waiting?

You can buy an additive that take the smell out but it's not cheap if it's only acrylic its not that bad last resort move in with mother inlaw then you will gladly put up with smell

jigsaw - i've heard to put a bucket of water in the room when painting (helps to vapourise the smell).  Have also heard of leaving a bowl of peeled onions in the room too... bit wierd huh!

When I had this problem I just sprayed some Glen20 in the room.  This seemed to get rid of the smell for a while though a few hours later it was back.

Being acrylic it shouldn't hang around too long...
