bargaining on a boat?

So whats the most you have ever knocked down the price of a boat?

For a $62k boat offering $45-50 an insult? my thinking is they can only say no. Especially if its been for sale for a few months.

thoughts? experiences?

Depends

On the sum of it's parts. Do some research work out the value of boat, engine, trailer and bling...if your happy with your estimates, that's your offer.

 Have a crack!!

I was offered 40k for my 55k boat . Wasn't insulted but I wasnt going to bother with them. If they had said 45k we might have come to an agreement.

been advertised for 3 months. over this peak boating period. Aussie boat, popular boat haines hunter, four stroke with just over 500 hours

seems to be a ok price but no bargain. My feelings with the boating market atm is its very hard to sell anything over $50k. thats a very significant amount of cash in these financial times. Not a lot of people with that much disposable income.

If he says yes your sweet. If no, you bargain or say thanks for your time.

Mon, 2014-03-31 21:54

All they can do is say no, then you have the choice of making another offer or say thank you for your time and look else were. Big point don't insult or antagonise the seller.

All depends on how keen they are to sell. I would personally hang up, or laugh at someone if they counter offered my $62 with a $40, but it depends if they need cash or not.

"The peak boat buying season is over. Do they really want the hassle of storing the boat for another 6-8 months waiting for someone interested, or do you want me to take your problem away for $x amount"

remind them of the cost of registration and maintenance...

Tue, 2014-04-01 09:47

If someone is advertising for 62 they ,in all reality want, min 55. Usually 10% less is acceptable. (maybe a bit more if done right)
ppl don't have the time to be messed around and I think offers 30% lowball are just a piss take.

If they are serious about getting rid of an item cos they have had it for too long etc... then they usually drop the price in the add and are willing to maybe take 10% off that price.

sure they can only say no...but so can every girl you drunkenly approach at the bar. is that the best way to get the deal done ?

A good offer just 4G under the asking price????

He will regret that, and end up selling for a lot less.

Is it ono or firm on the price?

If it's worth the money and it is exactly what you are looking for , then you'll know if it's a deal to be snapped up.

Boats in that price bracket generally will hang around longer than dinghys.

If he is desperate to sell however , you may get somewhere.

A mate had to wait 18 months to get the right offer on his tomcat , but when the purchaser saw the boat , he knew the deal was good and jumped on it.

New buyers always coming on the market.

Seller wanted $93k - I offered $75k and got knocked back. I ended up paying $70k as the Boat was re-possessed and I purchased pre-auction from Esanda.

I recently offered a bloke 90k for his motorhome who is asking 100k. He knocked back that one, but he still has it for sale, so I'll give it a month or so and hit him with it again.

cheers

Dale

I would go with the line

Tue, 2014-04-01 16:39

I don't want to offend you or anything, but there are plenty of boats for sale in this bracket, I am looking for the very best deal.

if you want it gone then I will give you 47K, he tells you you are dreaming, you say, well what is your rock bottom price?

he says 55K, you say 50 K is your max and offer stands for the next few days,

you haven't offended, you know what it costs for you to get it if you want it, he knows what will move it immediately, call back in a few days and say what do you reckon.

people selling should not get angry or offended, sure it is potentially worth more, but it is a relief to see it go and be done with.

Depends

If the ad says ONO or firm. Most people put on what it owes them and are prepared to bargin up to 5 grand then the rest is how desperate they are. it will sell and if he aint desperate he will wait...

number one rule if you are

Tue, 2014-04-01 18:51

number one rule if you are going to bargain for a boat (or anything).

Make sure you can stump up the folding first.

Not much more irritating than going thru a bit of too and fro, sorting a price then "I have to see if I can get a loan" or vice versa, bring payment then "finance company has the papers".

If you are bargaining then you should have the loot available in a day or two or at least say that beforehand that you are awaiting finance.

Similar if you are selling, you should declare that it has clear title or have already sorted the procedure for paying it out and transfer.

If you have it available then dangle the carrot before bargaining and say "if we can settle a price I'll have the loot for you tomorrow once I get a clear PPSR cert or letter from your finance company".

Lowball offers should only be made by those who have the cash ready to go straight away

Best line to use when bargaining? "How about we meet halfway-cant be fairer than that mate?"

I'd put the offer in, if he doesn't want to negotiate, tell him if he doesn't sell and changes his mind give you a call in the future.  I have done that a few times and often it pays off

Having just been through a similar process for a boat of same value id say that from my experience most people do the caryard thing and bang a few grand on top so they can be seen to be negotiating but still get around their price. Occasionally though you get the guys that like you figure if you dont ask you dont get and bang on 20k. Just another type of fisherman.....

Bottom line is know the boat and know the market.

A beautiful boat isnt worth a cent if no one has the money and the will to buy.

Likewise if you have the only used haines hunter in good nick for sale in your state you can confidently ask quite a bit more and then stand back as they pound down your door.

Good luck.

Boats are only worth what buyers are prepared to spend, if people can afford to hang onto them, they will.. IMO

i doesnt matter what you think your boat is worth. It is only worth what someone else is prepared to pay for it.

If your boats been on the market for a good few months there is usually a reason for it.

Over priced or a bucket of shit.
