Best fighting Demersal Pound for pound

Reading a post about the poor fight with a Dhue made me think what is the best fighter pound for pound.

Came up with Chinaman, NW snapper with Blue line top off the pops and jacks.

Interested to know others thought as there are plenty of fish I havent caught (yet).

Only Demersals but I am not sure whether a GT is demersal or pelagic.

Pinks and Queen Snapper

Mon, 2010-07-19 14:23

Love the first run with pinks on light gear,If you have ever hooked a decent queen snapper they let you know about it as well, lots of head shakes and stubborn bastards fight right to the top.oh yeah forgot about the baldy.I have not caught a heap of northern demersals so cant really comment.

But so do Sea Sweep for their size.Foot in mouth

Thats when you get your hopes up with a reasonably strong fight only to see a bloody sea sweep float to teh surface. Pound for pound they fight well.

Longnose Emperor and Big Reds go hard.

Hard to go past the chinaman (galloper) for all round grunt and stamina.

Chinaman

Mon, 2010-07-19 16:48

Yep, Chinamanizza for me.  Got a 10kg and 4kg as a double header in 25m of water and have never been worked on the gunnels so bad.  Caught plenty of everything else but that was a standout.

The hardest demersal string puller?

Mon, 2010-07-19 17:37

Up north I would say Chinaman and in Perth waters Queen Snapper.   Not including cod, sambos, AJs or any of trevally species as demersals but I think a Chinaman of simialr weight would pull some of those backwards.

Three way tie

Mon, 2010-07-19 18:15

Its a three way tie with chinaman, red bass and jacks in deep water all take a hell of an effort to get them up.

Down south the big blue groper take a bit of shifting too.

I'll vote for china's and Red Emperor.    Bass and Jacks hit hard and try to bury you off the mark but once they can't see a refuge they seem to give up in my opinion.  China's on the other hand fight hard all the way.

WA Jobbies must go harder than NT ones. Ones I've caught were not that memorable. Taste pretty good though.

Must go harder than east

Wed, 2010-07-21 15:14

Must go harder than east coast ones too.  My best is a 9kg fish on stickbait and it wasn't that tough.  Best on light line where they get a chance to peel some string.

One of the best tasting fish around though.

Hardest fighting Dermal for

Thu, 2010-07-22 16:40

Hardest fighting Dermal for me so far has been catching Jewfish in NT ( or Mulloway as we call them here in WA) in shallow water.

in less than 4~5m of water they steam trains!

that would followed by the Fingermark, as it was a dirty fighter and nearly snagged me twice on the anchor rope.

another vote for chinaman.

another vote for chinaman. have to agree with red bass aswell, caught a 7kg one in exmouth recentlly and it was epic. big cod go extremly hard, caught a few around the 100kg mark in exxy a few years ago, the only way to get them off the bottom is with HEAVY handlines and make sure u wear gloves. also spangled emporer go hard for there size

Yes I forgot about the one buff bream I caught

Tue, 2010-07-27 09:28

Thought what the. It was in the Dawesville cut on herring gear and mate me work my you no what off. After catching a couple of reds on Saturday night in shallow water I dont rate them that highly as some, certainly not a Jack and especially not like a good size Blue lined emporor. Also caught the pain in the but neighbours sweetlip and it went pretty hard and again made me think what the, just to be extremely dissapointed with the outcome. Good fun on light gear.

Neels

PS will try and post some pics and a story of a most memorable late arvo/evening and night fish.
