Bit of fun on the water at Groote Eylandt

Wade and I hit the water at 5am and as there was no breeze or swell we decided to trek down to South Point, at the bottom of Groote Eylandt.  When we got down there we were amazed at the numerous bait schools hanging around (although no birds working), particularly as many of the schools were bat fish.

We threw the lures out and straight away mine was taken......I initially thought I was snagged but after a quick check by Wade we realised it was a big fish.  I was hoping it was the elusive Mack as I've been wanting to catch one for ages.  Once again I lucked out as it busted off.  Oh well, better luck next time.  Lure back out again and it took off straight away.  Unfortunately this time it was a shark – and he snapped the bib on the lure.

All of a sudden Wade's lure took off and after a bit of a fight he pulled in a Cod! You bewdy, cant wait to eat that for tea!

We trawled around for a bit longer and just as we were about to pull the lures in for the day as the breeze was starting, my rod started screaming.  Would you believe it, another big Cod!

We then motored up to Connexion Island as some of our mates were fishing there.  On our second drift Wade had just dropped his bait to the bottom when a school of baitfish being smashed by tuna started heading towards our boat. He would up really fast and without time to change his rig, threw out his baitcaster which already had a slice on it.  Sure enough, he was hooked up straight away, although I'm not sure the tuna realised as it kept on swimming with the school!  He had a great time winding it in....

A few more drifts bottom bouncing and we pulled in 4 Tricky Snappers.  We looked to the horizon and saw some rain heading our way so called it a day.  Boat is in the backyard now getting washed by all of this rain (ripper!).

Love living in paradise!

Cheers squidvicious, they are everwhere up here and not too partial to a hook while bottom bouncing.  Haven't eaten one yet - usually just send them back down to the depths.

Yeah, Wade had a ball

Sun, 2010-11-21 11:15

Yeah, Wade had a ball winding in that tuna!  Probably wasn't the right gear to use for that size of fish, but hey, gotta make the most out of every opportunity!  Lots more fun than playing with it on larger gear - thats too easy!

haha! yep, we sure are

haha! yep, we sure are having a ball!  Fishing up here is so amazing, we've been here for 7 months and go fishing at least every week.  Even now each time I go out I catch a new species or see something I've never seen before (like schools of batfish or macks jumping 20m out of the water!).  Is definately an aquarium up this neck of the woods and I recommend it to anyone!

maybe this time

Sun, 2010-11-21 13:40

I might have got a bigger cod this time Russ, but Wade still holds the boat record with the monster below (cauht a few months ago). Best thing is now we know you can catch them bottom bouncing, with lures and with poppers!

We're spewing about losing the lures - usually its rigs and 2-3 sinkers each per trip (coz of the sharks and macks busting them off as we're winding fish up!).  Never had a bib bust off though so that lure is straight to the pool room!  And its another excuse for Wade to buy more!

Next report will be next weekend (but I'm sure Wade will be going out during the week as well!)

you need to hide the boat

Sun, 2010-11-21 21:47

you need to hide the boat keys or take them to work with you and say sorry , i forgot i had them in my bagLaughing. but yeah its a decent cod of Wades, but im sure you will get one better. you always seem to do better in the long run.

Sorry Wade , im not on Clair's side , just that i see it as it isTongue out
